I used to fly this plane many times on business out of Tampa back in the 80's and 90's. One time we were on approach into Atlanta at night and there was another aircraft on the runway so they had to abort. The pilot goosed the throttles and the L-1011 climbed like a cat shot in the butt. Bar None it was the best aircraft I have ever flown on from my many hours in the air.
When you flew the L-1011 the old saying was...WHAT TURBULANCE?
Brilliant, brings back memories of my first flying days, back as young as 18 months in 1989. Still get to see the L1011 occasionally flying into RAF Brize Norton. Still Delta however had the best livery for the L1011
L-1011 has a perfect saftey record (beside the microburst and pilot errors). The MD-11 & DC-10 had numerous issues. I would love to fly on one of these
Back in '95, us old folks had what you called Camcoders. And they recorded onto something called video tape that you watched on something called a VCR.
Probably the best sounding jet engine ever made. The first flight i ever took (that i remember) was in a L1011 from Kansas City to LA. I sat just in front of the wing and was mesmerized by the engine the entire flight. I fell in love that day... Rolls-Royce made a fan for life.
Was on an a delta in 1996 we flew from dublin too atlanta then from there on the L1011 too orlando for 3 weeks great aircraft! Shame its not in service anymore.

I felt as it I were at the center of the world. And love, Love, LOVE the sound of those Rolls-Royce engines. I think that is what is also on the C5A, isn't it?
I never rode in a L1011. I used to watch them take off from PDX all the time. I know the DC10/MD11 won but the L1011 had a much more beautiful design. Being a fan of the Boeing 727 the L1011 was in a close 2nd.
@alnilam66 And in the end, the DC-10 couldn't compete with the B-747. It's a shame that Lockheed wasn't able to get more orders fot the 1011, it was a great plane from everything I've read and heard. Maybe it was built for a time when flying was a luxury, and I guess that just didn't last, really a shame, but Delta kept them flying for a long time at least.I'm sure they're still being used in other country's airlines or for freight delivery.
Unfortunately I never got to fly on one. I'm no plane spotter but I think the L-1011 i s the most beautiful plane. Those engines sound incredible. Last year I flew on a 757 from the 80's that was leased to the airline I flew with and the engines sounded and felt so raw. It was exciting. Not like the plastic sounding '320s these days. Can't beat that almost edgy uncertainty that was felt on older jets :).
This suddenly brought back another memory: flying from Korea to Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific L1011. I remember it because it had bare metal engine cowlings with the Rolls Royce logo stamped on them. Beautiful.
This makes me feel a bit sad because I sooo miss those old Delta Tristars. They were also the first plane I flew across either the Atlantic or Pacific so it was like a baptism of international flight for me too. Damn, it even has the old Delta logo. I hate the new ones.
I miss the L-1011s of TWA Eastern and Delta,I flew on them many times from BOsS to MCO-ATL,FLL,BOS and SFO,these birds were much better than jets we have today,Lockheed needs to get back into the passenger jets business again! Bring back the L-1011s!
I would specifically fly LAX/ATL ATL/LGU to fly on Delta L-1011. In those days there were 747's non-stop to JFK and I would still go out of my way just to fly on the 1011! Miss them so much! TWA had a flight from PHX/LAS L-1011 leaving around 2340 and return at 6.10a. I would fly up to Vegas gamble a bit and couldn't wait to board that plane, even though it was only a 45min. flight. Then from PHX it went onto JFK, but insane they flew it for short haul, yet packed most evenings! Fun times!
no bull shit, was in riyadh saudi arabia in the 80s and the l1011 was on the 5 riyal note(their money) the rb211 sounded great but i was also there when rolls royce was thrown out of the kingdom. it had a terrible reliability record in the harsh conditions
That last time I flew on an L1011 was in August 1975 when my Dad took us all to visit our grandfather on Long Island. We flew TWA from San Francisco to Kennedy Airport.
@dilbert5909 Hi love your comment! I too booked my travel on the L-1011 I could of gone non-stop on any number of 747's in the 80's from LAX/JFK but went through ATL just to fly on Delta L-1011. I also flew a flight TWA ran from PHX/LAS nightly omg only got 22,000 feet! I would go weekly. AIrfare was only 29 or 39$. Hard to believe! I so miss travel on that big beautiful bird with the RR engines! I have fond memories! loved Delta's crew as well!
I have flown on a lot of aircraft in my life and I don't care what you say about the DC-10, the L-1011 was the best aircraft I have ever flown on bar none. But then again it was back in the days when they built aircraft for comfort of the client and not for how many people you could squeeze into a fuselage.
It was back in the days when the airlines appreciated their customers.
@IngloriusBastard11 That was back in the days when not everyone can afford to fly...unlike today, when airlines are made to serve the general public, not just the rich. I like it better now honestly.
@IngloriusBastard11 I think the RAF still use them as troop transports, obviously not IN warzones, for that they use C-130's. I've always wanted to go on a tri-star. I'd have been terrified on a DC-10 back in the day though!
@pcdocter123 almost all of the DC-10's??? Have you heard of Europe banning them cos they are too noisy - so BA, KLM And Lufthansa had to drop them for the 777 or A330!
@BigJrob10 To bad that wasn't the planes fault it was AA mechanics fault for not attaching the engine and pylon to the wing properly !For that disaster! And by the way where is the L 1011 now?Meanwhile the DC-10 can still be seen flying around Fed-Ex UPS etc and the Airforce who use them to drop chemicals on forest and wildfires!
@rich1223 or cargo doors blowing off. that wasnt anyone elses fault but the airplane. it was faulty, a lemon. the L-1011 was the case of bad timing on Lockheed's part, but the plane was not at fault. It was a sound aircraft, and had half the fatalities of the DC-10 in pretty much the same operating life. And maybe 1 or 2 crashes can be attributed to the aircraft itself. The L-1011 was a safer aircraft, and its a shame a company like Boeing didnt make or it would still be flying passengers today
When I flew for TWA, I was on the L-10 a lot to Europe.....this airplane was luxurious, roomy, quiet, and fun to work in. I don't think I ever had an un happy passenger....
@tenor175 I flew to Europe back in 1988 when I was 17 on a trip after graduating from High School. It was a school trip. We departed from JFK on Royal Jordanian in route to Amsterdam. I am almost positive it was a L1011 we were on. It's been so long ago and I didn't really think about things like that back then. Wish I knew for sure.
loved the L 1011...I am 34 and used to fly on them back in the 80's from SJC (san jose ca) to ORD (chicago)...sturdiest airplane and I loved the whine of the engines....this year I flew the A-321 to chicago and the MD90 back to Atl.....they do not compare to the L-1011!!!
THe L-1011 was one of the safest and most efficient planes of that generation of aircraft. I flew on L-1011's (TWA, Delta and Eastern) many times back in the day.
This totally reminds me of my first flight on a Tri-Star when I was about 8 years old. I was seated in just about the same spot as this video and I remember how surprised I was at the sound of the engines. I wasn't expecting that buzz saw sound to be so loud in the cabin. It almost scared me a little. Nice video.
@iAirsoft69 Rolls-Royce could not produce the engines in time due to RR going bankrupt, thus delaying delivery of the engines and by then it was considered too late into the design to change engine suppliers to either GE or Pratt. In fear, a lot of airlines canceled their L-1011 orders in favor of the DC-10 instead.
It's not like the engines were bad, in fact they were great engines (albeit smokey on startup) It was just too little too late for Lockheed to recover in terms of sales.
I remember doing airline catering in the 80's Delta would bring these in for the sub of a dc-8 the galley was in the belly of the plane.had 2 elevators to bring carts and people up and down.
Great video, I'm only 17 and I was so young but it was like just yesterday I watched those takeoff from TPA unfortunatley, we don't even get the 763s,764s or any of the 767s anymore :( so this brings back great videos of the DL widebodies at TPA, cool thing now UA has maintinence at TPA and we get the 757s 763s and 744 it's great but AMAZING video :) I've subscribed.
I loved this aircraft . I must have flown 75 times or more from MIA - ATL. Dad work for DAL. Always flow up front. Does anyone remember the way the doors opened. What a great aircraft
@alexflum yeah, I didn't think so. That's why I asked. That with the fact that taking personal videos when Tri Stars were still being regularly flown (especially by an airline like Delta) wasn't the easiest or most accessible thing either.
@BrokebackBob it was actually kind of a failure. They halted manufacturing civil aircraft in 1992 due to poor sales. Absolutely fantastic airplane though. Much better than DC10 in my opinion.
@BrokebackBob it was actually kind of a failure. They halted manufacturing civil aircraft in 1982 due to poor sales. Absolutely fantastic airplane though. Much better than DC10 in my opinion.
@howzitgoin1970 In 1991 I was so fortunate enough to fly on an RAF Tristar to Bermuda. I Can't believe it was nearly twenty years ago! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I find this video in particular, intimately enjoyable. They also had a number of VC10s and initially, I thought I would be flying on that. If only I had the chance to fly on a VC10.
The L-1011 had so many advanced systems compared to the aircraft of the same era. It really makes me wonder what planes would be like today if Lockheed had stayed in the civil aircraft business.
very nostalgic...reminds me of my trips from london to calcutta (india) on british airways tristar (1989) and then chicago to amman on a royal jornadian tristar.
@Scoused5000 Oh, Yes you CAN beat the sound of British jet engines!! With the plants from GE & Pratt $ Whitney being produced today, They're kind of hard to beat!!! Besides, British Airways uses the GE-90 engines on their Boeing 777s so I guess they must like American jet engines better than their own!!! Go figure!!!
LOVE the sound of those RB211 High-Bypass-Ratio turbofans on takeoff!!! SWEET music to my ears!! The same goes to the GE HBR turbofans on the DC-10!!!
QUE SONIDO TAN BELLO, ADORO VER DESPEGAR UN AVION, LASTIMA QUE VIVA EN UNA REGION DONDE EL AEROPUERTO SOLO RECIBE TARITAS, POR OTRA PARTE YA NI VUELOS HAY, ESO QUE ES UNA ZONA PETROLERA, CHAVEZ ACABO CON TODO, MALDITO HIJO DE LA GRAN PUTA CUANDO SE IRA.
It was an amazing plane. I had a couple rides back in 80s. But they lost to DC10/MD11. I don't see any 1011s anymore. But I still see DC10s flying for UPS, As well as 727s flying for DHL. Guess they use them, because they are cheap and they have not much liability when carring cargo.
Happy day. I used to work for Delta's cargo GSA in the UK 1992 - 1998 and we got the all time cargo load record of general freight LGW-ATL 22,000kgs. I still have the load sheet somewhere. Unmistakeable engine note on takeoff. HAppy memories
Thank you for sharing this video. My pulse quickens when I hear the sounds of those classic engines. While today's airliners are safer and more efficient, I miss those classic jets from the old days. They had so much more style and character.
The l 1011 had a great track record great plane great video back in the day people wore suits sport jackets dresses skirts it was a big thing even in coach i will not fly today unless i have to I feel sorry for those who do.
Lockheed/Martin & Boeing are the only two giants left and Lockheed bowed out after the Tristar program though they still probably provide parts for both the remaining Tristars and the C-5 Galaxy. Don't know why Lockheed never offered the C-5 in an airliner version(though Im guessing the C-5 was too Air Force classified). It would've given the 747 a run for it's money.
Aviator147 I think what has happened is that people want to think they are sitting in their living rooms when they fly. As a passenger this plane truly gave you a sense of flying. The only thing better could be a P-51 Mustang...lol.
We will never see those great days again in aviation. I always liked coming into Tampa in the afternoon when we had to avoid the thunderheads and looking down the throat of those Rolls Royce engines as you went through the clouds.
One of the greatest experiences I ever had as a business traveller out of Tampa was flying these bad boys all the time. This plane was one of the greatest planes ever designed in my book and I am glad I was alive in an era when flying a plane wasn't like traveling in a bus with wings. Most people will never enjoy the times we had when the airlines really made you feel appreciated and the pilots enjoyed flying this equipment as much as we liked being passengers. IT WAS TRULY A GREAT TIME.

I am almost positive it was a L1011 we were on. It's been so long ago and I didn't really think about things like that back then. Wish I knew for sure.

@tenor175 Great memories for you!
The few european airliners who flew the L-1011 were the German LTU, with the beautiful red color scheme.
TAP from portugal, only the -500 series, and the biggest operator from that days, Britisch Airways, had 26 Tristars, 10 of wich were -500 series.
The 747 jumbo-jet was clearly bigger than the DC-10 and L-1011.
So Boeing tried to make a direct Tri-jet competitor too.
Just search for ''3 engined 747'' and you will find a picture of it.
Later the 747 SP.

loved the L 1011...I am 34 and used to fly on them back in the 80's from SJC (san jose ca) to ORD (chicago)...sturdiest airplane and I loved the whine of the engines....this year I flew the A-321 to chicago and the MD90 back to Atl.....they do not compare to the L-1011!!!

why was this named the 1011? any significance? any other birds they produced?
pittibullie 10 months ago
THe L-1011 was one of the safest and most efficient planes of that generation of aircraft. I flew on L-1011's (TWA, Delta and Eastern) many times back in the day.

Yeah, that's a loud plane.

the good old RB211, these engines were in advance at their time and open the way to the TRENT family

Nice video.

as great as those engines were, they still doomed this airline from the beginning. Oh what could have been
onebadlt123 10 months ago
@onebadlt123 What was wrong with the engines?
iAirsoft69 10 months ago

Great video, I'm only 17 and I was so young but it was like just yesterday I watched those takeoff from TPA unfortunatley, we don't even get the 763s,764s or any of the 767s anymore :( so this brings back great videos of the DL widebodies at TPA, cool thing now UA has maintinence at TPA and we get the 757s 763s and 744 it's great but AMAZING video :) I've subscribed.

wait when was this video taken? Delta still flies TriStars?
danielfisher94 11 months ago
@danielfisher94 This must have been filmed 10+ years ago.. This is out of TPA. TriStars are long gone with Delta my friend..
alexflum 11 months ago
@alexflum yeah, I didn't think so. That's why I asked. That with the fact that taking personal videos when Tri Stars were still being regularly flown (especially by an airline like Delta) wasn't the easiest or most accessible thing either.
danielfisher94 11 months ago
@danielfisher94 This video was taken in July 1995. Delta retired Tristars in 2001, being replaced by Boeing 767-400ERs.

BoomerNavy70 sure got it right. The L1011 TriStar,
a Lockheed triumph on the order of the triumph of
the 747 for Boeing.

@BrokebackBob it was actually kind of a failure. They halted manufacturing civil aircraft in 1992 due to poor sales. Absolutely fantastic airplane though. Much better than DC10 in my opinion.

@ford9572 British Airways uses both GE and Rolls-Royce engines for its 777 fleet.

It was an amazing plane. I had a couple rides back in 80s. But they lost to DC10/MD11. I don't see any 1011s anymore. But I still see DC10s flying for UPS, As well as 727s flying for DHL. Guess they use them, because they are cheap and they have not much liability when carring cargo.
syeager9 1 year ago
