I was reading up on the USS Iowa today after seeing an yahoo photo gallery on old battleships and I ran into the story of the accident at first it sounded like it was sabotage, but then you read on about the experiments how upper command didn't want it mentioned and how the investigations seemed to create some kind of excuse to deter from what the real issue is. Sorry to hear about your loss. USA..
USS Iowa BB-61 that ship, month, day and year still hurts every day, and even that it has been 21 years my family still morns the loss my brave uncle Jose Luis Martinez Jr. My family greatest loss of their son, husband, brother, uncle, and the greatest loss of all a FATHER to an unborn baby girl. To you my brave uncle I salute you with honor, admiration and respect. I LOVE YOU and you will always be in our hearts. With LOVE Delma, Briana and Jose Luis Martinez III.

I too was on the Iowa that day. GMG2 Larry Daniels, Mount Captain of Mt.54 port side. John Rodney Young and i were inseperable. Where you saw him, most times you saw me too. He was about to get married when we returned from this exercise. Words can't explain it. This so called "Glimpse of Hell" movie, I've never seen it. My doctors advise against it but from what i here they didn't get it right anyway. Would love to talk to others that on board that day or during that time. Miami V.A. Inpatient.
My father was on the ship when that explosion happened (repair officer LCDR Barbra) and I remember the stories and many heros were born that day. I was on the USS Scott (DDG-995) about 5 miles away, sitting on the bow watching the smoke billow from the the mighty Battleship off in the distance. I remember wondering if my father was ok, since he had a vast knowledge of damage control I knew he was in the middle of the action.
I have one thing to add to those lost. As a former Air Force and Navy Airman/Seaman i wish to say "Anchors away!"...Best words i can that would be a tribute to the boys lost. They died serving for the country they loved.
a very good video . but one part does piss me off a bit , when they so the hanger scene for the tribute with the president , do you know where the Gunnermates that served with these HEROS were ?? they were outside the hanger !! we were not allowed inside because we had shown up too late and was told sorry. first come , first serve , most those "shipmates" were shore based "sailors" with no relation to the 47 , we were left outside and offered to here it on a speaker, Navy taking careof itsown
It is hard to believe that it has been almost 20 years since the explosion. I was on the pier that day the Iowa came home. I lost a loved in the explosion. It would ne nice if we had the true answers.
the honest truth from a Gunner that was there , it was an accident combined with the idiotic thought that a 5 bag shoot would work with no issues , I made not of ever made chief in my 20 years , but i can rest easy because i ensured , a fellow shipmate was cleared of any wrong doing (GMG2 HARTWIG) , see you soon my fellow gunners , safe seas and following waves R/GMG1(SW) ret
It was a sad day. Very much like 911. Thanks for posting this video. it is in my opinion the best of Iowa's postings. In hopes of gaining a 900 ship navy I cast my ballot much the same as most did in those years. The NAVY sucks for covering it's ass in order to promote the commander and chief.Lesson learned: Missles are better and a vote cast can be a dangerous thing in the wrong hands.
Larry Seaquest would have never let this happen, Capt. Moose (the football star)was gettin'sum by way of D.C.
One of my classmates, Ramon J Bradshaw was killed on this ship. He left behind a mother, sister, and a 18 month old son. May God have mercy when the truth finally comes out!!!!
Unlike amy artillery powder bags which have increments you can remove; sixteen inch powder bags do not. By trying to alter them to improve long range gun accracy causes mishaps like what happend on the Iowa. It's very sad that the navy tried to blame crew members for what happened. Commander of the pacific fleet at the time is the one that would be responsible. The captain of the ship would have never violated safety requlations without higher orders.
Thanks for the input Schrubbe1966. I truely think that most Americans know that it was not the crews fault and that as usual someone higher up was covering their ass. It was terrible to take such a tragic event and then try to blame someone following orders. and that whole crap of somehow trying to accuse the one guy of being gay...like that would have caused the explosion!
@RollingThunderHorse No one was accused of just being gay... the original story by the Navy said that one gay guy killed himself and his turret mates by sabotaging the gun in order to get at a lover who had jilted him and who was in there, too. Of course they had to be gay since they were all men in there. The Navy actually apologized to his family, though. The first time in the history of the Navys service that they actually did so.
I was onboard that day in T-3 , never forget that day lost a lot of good friends that day and got to see the true dark underbelly of the US NAVY who tried to frame a fellow sailor GM2 Hartwig for the accident because they knew he be unable to defend himself and they were afriad the truth would get out and expose the Battleship for what they truly were "accidents waiting to happen" nothing against the crew they were the best and i was proud to serve with them and have no regrets.
mjandjb, I'm sorry for your loss of your friends. I'm sure the only thing more painful besides their deaths would to have a fellow sailor blamed for something he didn't do. We were there to follow a local sailor and their family as they reunited. Understandably the sailor was too distraught to talk to us. If was emotional for me so I can't imagine what it was like for you.
I was aboard the Iowa the day it happened. I was in the 5" gun mount just aft of Turret 2. It's a scene that's been with me ever since. We lost a lot of good men & friends that day.
sniperjack...I can't even imagine how horrible that day was. I can only hope that this video shows that the men that died were not forgotten and that we tried to honor them in the only way we knew how.
It was a tough day, to say the least. I was only 18 at the time, and in turret 3, during the explosion.
I have a vid as well. Check it out. I used some still pics and newspaper clippings from my own collection. I'd love to share resources with you, if you want to make another one.
Tyrone Dwayne Foley was a friend of my dad's, they went to college together and was born in the same town. He told me about the USS IOWA incident. It's so sad that 47 men had to die so young, I wish things like this would never happen. A VERY TOUCHING TRIBUTE VIDEO. It reminds me how life is so valueable and fragile that you can't take it for granted.
I wanted to thank you for rating my video. I'm sorry it took so long to reply. It was so moving to be there and watch as this ship came home. I hope it did justice to the men who served aboard her and the men who died in that terrible accident.
Outstanding! I have a lump in my throught. I was aboard Iowa and I think it is a great posting! I notice the WSYX @ the end. I am from OH, are you too?

Being that this is a common operation, why would something like this happen at that very time? Could it be deliberate after all?
