Slave's "The Concept" is to this day my favorite album of all time. I still play it regularly. NASA needs to send it off into space. Let other "beings" appreciate it.
This is a disservice to the lead guitars and the sax- we cannot hear them clearly in this video to tell how extraordinarily EXCELLENT both parts are in the original.
Drac was pissed of about Starleana and Curt coming in and doing lead vocals, and that he didn't get to do his patened guitar solos anymore in 1980-81. I think they could have still incorporated Drac's solo in the their 80's synth R&B sound. It didn't completely hurt the group when he left because Mark Adams was the man on the bass. His bass drove the group along with Steve Arrington's vocals. R.I.P. Mark Adams, one of the greatest bass guitarist ever.
Proud and happy to say, Amazing masterful talented musical groups from the "Gem City", Dayton, Ohio! The Ohio Players, Zapp featuring Roger, Heatwave, Slave, Sun, Shirley Murdock, Steve Arrington, Mel'sa Morgan and of course, Lakeside.
@stevi1955 - No doubt. Mad props to Dayton!! These were some ass whoopin' bands you listed. Great production on all those LPs of the groups you named as well. Unreal how a small city in Ohio can turn into the hotbed of the best music of the 70's and 80's.
@PAMAROSHOUSE NOT STEVE A.......STEVE ARRINGTON just played Chgo on 2/5/2011 with his New Band. Wow! They were incredible! Steve sounds Fabulous. STEVE ARRINGTON - HOUSE OF BLUES CHGO. 4/9/2011
I was "poppin and lockin" in the funk era....miss those days...those were the days...you could go to a club...get your drink on and get your dance on and never really have to worry about violence...maybe a bar room brawl...
Sorry, no Mark Adams - then no Slave. I have been a fan since 1976, and there should be a law against letting one member go out and represent an entire group. THIS IS NOT SLAVE!
WTF? omg, DRAC turned into FATBASTARD! Im wondering if the ORIGINAL members of SLAVE saw this video, SLAVE was a TIGHT group, like ANY band of that era, they hand issues within the group, but DAYUM! this is horrible!
Steve Washington(Fearless Leader) was the heart and soul of the group, I went to high school with him, I remember seeing him one day while I was coming out of my class(East Orange High School) and he told me about a band he was working with, turned out to be the FUNKIEST band!!!
Drac is large and in charge enough to be king of a small island nation today, for better or worse. All that counts to me is that the dude who carried me away when I was 15 – although not quite as fierce as back in the day – can still make that Strat tell everyone the truth
This is DRAC and his version of slave..He is the only original member in this video.. Music is a harsh business, Drac left slave after the stone jam album, and returned with the group in 1988..And now acts like he played in all the hits when he really didn't.. The group kinda fazed him out, thats why he left.. In the late 70's and early 80's music was going in a different direction. He still wanted to do rock solo's....If anything Mark Adams, Danny Webster, and Floyd Miller should be doing this.
They inspired me and so many others to pick up the bass or guitar. The song was so accessible and the energy so pure. It is almost tantric . You go into a trance state. By the way, the audio is not synced with the video.
Around 78 my band used to practice across the street from Steve's (fearless leader) mother's house in East Orange, NJ . We would drool when they unloaded the huge silver painted speaker cabinets off the truck. It's important for poor black kids to see success. Super heros.
Guess 30 years may have taken it's took it's toll on the brothers, like it did to all of us who were young in the late 70's, but Drac and his Fender Stratocaster are still holding it down... check him out from 5:35 to 6:00... brother still got some skills
No remnants of the true Slave that I remember from Dayton. We 've been led astray and hoodwinked. Even Curt and Star could have put together a better vocal performance with Steve A. and Danny W. absent.
@ohioplayer There will always be SLAVE after Steve A., but not at their best, They were monsters when he was there singing lead. Steve Arrington is back now with his own band (THEY ARE HOT) ON TOUR for 2011.
no MR Mark on Steve Arrington!! this is a joke!! This isnt Slave!! where is Danny Webster?
This is very dis respectful to come on stage and perform songs by 1 of the Greatist Funk Bands in history!! Even the Clothes are not like the Real Slave look. How SAD!!
Hold up! Where is Mark Adams?!! Where is Steve Arrington?!! Where is Starlena?!! Man, this ain't Slave! This is like a Slave tribute band, or a cheaper generic version of Slave! Disappointed!!
too bad this dvd was a joke, passing themselves off as slave, even drac wasnt truely representing, he was a joke, very very low budget without any other founding member present but the music was tight and sounded like lead singer was doubled in voice lead me to believe they were singing off tracks
@zzzddd7 he still funks it up! sheeiit, i see a lot players that are healthy and still can't touch Drac! he's done well considering what he's been through!!! he's obviously doin something right, cause he's workin with george clinton on some new stuff!
@Slojamoz I HAVE TO QUESTION YOUR EARS. I KNOW A LOT OF PLAYERS THAT COULD PLAY DRAC OFF A STAGE IN SECONDS INCLUDING ME. YOU HAVE TO AGREE HIS SKILLS HAS DIMINISHED. TRUTHFULLY.
@zzzddd7 agreed, some of his chops aren't as sharp as 30 years ago! i don't doubt that some can outplay him now! i'm just saying there's always a balance!! and a lot of the younger players now have had more gadgets that have given them ops for more finger and wrist control as a daily living function, not just with playing, like we did back in the day! but, ya gotta give Drac his props! it's the silence in between the beats that brings on the funk! MAA'T ONE LOVE!!!
@notton155 parliament is the original first funk outfit, if it wasnt for them there could never be such music as funk, so they by default will be number one
This am the SHIT!!! Mark Adams was a big influence on me in my early days of learning the bass. "YOU CAN SLIDE MY FINGER ON IT!" Today's shit just can't compare. The thing about funk that a lot of people don't get is that it's inherently very simple music, but the pocket is soooo tight, you can't help but move. If your head starts boppin' without you thinkin' about it, then it's FUNKY!
Man these guys got off. Funk is played with Brass, Pounding bass and guitar shred. It is sad in today's world nobody understand this music. If they do they are obscure. LONG LIVE FUNK!!!
Steve Arrington didn't join the group until 1978 when Slave was recording "The Concept" album. Tim Dozier, the original drummer, left the group after that album.
Y'all know what? "Drac", Mark Adams, Steve Arrington, Steve Washington, Danny Webster, Starleana Young, & Curt Jones need to have one more concert together.... REAL RAP!
Slave is still that shit! "Drac" Hicks is a super heavyweight, but he's still one of the baddest guitarists out there! Mark Adams (bass) is just as good as Verdine White! (No disrespect!)
Well, Mark Adams did admit that he was influenced by Larry Graham from the Sly & The Family Stone days & Graham is the pure legend & one of my favorites ("Release Yourself" is playin' on my computer now.) but he wasn't the only one..... But i'mma check da page.......
For those who think Slave is washed up don't ever forget they already been their done that, yeah I know they are not like the Police who can get back together after twenty five years and sell out every venue in an hour, but Slave just like The Bar Kays, Cameo ,Con Funk Shun, Dazz Band and the list goes on, made so many house parties, bbq's, clubs and radio stations rockin and those who were their to remember that era knows what im talkin about. Peace.
I totally agree with you. I used this example. Why are The New Kids on the block playing Large arenas and the New Edition is playing night Clubs.?? They(White Fans) support their artist while we say things like"They're washed up" Truly sad........
Regardless to the weight gain, they were jamming and they sounded good to me!!
A party, birthday or otherwise was NOT jumping until "Slide" was played at least once. It is so good to see the old schoolers out there showing the young ones how its done!!
There was a Steve Washington & Steve Arrington. Washington was the unsung leader of the group & trumpet player. Arrington joined the group after "Slide" came out and was it's lead singer & drummer.... I may be late on the response, but this is the facts.
if anybody knows , what happened to steve washington ? does he have a website??? how did drac put on so much weight ?// maybe some bands can;t comeback . where's danny webster ??
You're talking about Steve Arrington, who was singing with them. He's a minister in Kettering, OH. I can't recall the name of the church, I think something with Full of Love. They got older and started eating, I guess.
I think the negative comments about Drac come from his drastic change of appearance from his photo on the back of the 1st album. He could have chose not to be part of this concert. We would have missed out. Since I was too young to attend concerts when this song came out I am glad to see this. His appearance is a perfect example of why Black folks need to change their diet. The negative comments allude to the hate & disdain Blacks show each other daily. You have been programmed to hate Black.
I can understand why you feel the way that you do, and I can agree. If and only "if" this is true then something needs to be done to help the brother. The group is still tight though. To the person that refers the solo to the original cut: I think that drac has grown musically since that time.
This was my favourite funk band and in my opinion (and my brothers) the best funk band on the planet bar none (and they had some very serious competition back in the day let's face it). Thanks to youtube I can actually view some footage of them. I think the Hardness of the World was their best album as it was just so DIFFERENT. This video is a bit of a mess but hey listen to the albums instead folks. Yep people need to be schooled.
YO dig this Stevie Washington is in Orange NJ pickin up cans aint that F#*kt up....He still created one of the baddest bands of all time(thats my mfn word)
this is too funny... Draq done had a little too much blood... They straight up jammin doe.. the lead guitarist sucks that's ok i'm not a hater I know good players.. They rhythm is kickin ass. They are tight but he sucks on lead. The studio version has two or three good solos.. maybe his fingers got to fat... sorry bout that having fun still true ok second soloist is smother but he didn't play but three notes
U GOT THAT RIGHT !!!!! mssquirrely !!!! We gotta school em cause SOME of them just totally mess up a classic by rapping over it. I try to keep an open mind but i don't think it's meant for me TO get it.
Most and I say it again "MOST" New Schoolers don't know nothin' about this group...like you said this was one of the BADDEST Bass Players around, like Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller and dude from Earth Wind & Fire...It's the OLD SCHOOLERS job to SCHOOL'EM...LOL!!!
Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire.. Maurice White's brother.... You are totally right about the list of bass players.... Don't forget: Michael Henderson, Keni Burke, Rick James, Byron Miller (George Duke), and of course the almighty Larry Graham.
Oops! Make that Bobby Watson of Rufus. And Drac has a better tone than 99% of today's pimple-faced shredder muthapluckers. Like Hendrix, he could make a Strat speak in tongues.
I myself am black and i see the constant negativity shown to legends like DRAC. Its rather dissapointing. I listen to both rock and funk. Essentially they are one in the same. Hendrix and the BAND of GYPSYS were the first ones to experiment with funk. Dont believe it, look up a song called "who know" by the band of gypsys. Hendrix heavily influenced this group as well as many other funk groups that emerged in the 70's.
in hendrix's time, he wasnt hte only one experimenting with funk, James Brown as well as Sly Stone , and many others, until it came into full fruition in the 70s, Parliament Funkadelic as well
This post is to add to BWizer's. How come we as black people direct so much contempt and negativity toward each other. When The Grateful Dead perform their caucasian fans come out in droves to exhalt them. But blacks on the other hand, we laugh and ridicule performers like Drac and others every chance we get, over B.S.. Thats one of the biggest reasons we have so many problems as a race... an almost hatred of ourselves.
I love Drac man, but he needs to stay healthy, otherwise I would go to this concert, no doubt about that, i know what you mean , its stupid , buts thats the way it goes
Slave hit it big in 78' - so did Van Halen. How come Van Halen can still pull in huge crowds and bands like Slave are looked at as "played out"? I told a friend of mine that I had a Slave on my iPod and he laughed at me.
Oh well, I'm glad Slave is still jammin'. I just wish Steve Arrington would perform with them agian.
Guess you just have to be a die-hard Slave fan to fully appreciate this video. For whatever reason, I see still the Slave of yesteryear. Just happy they are sill around. Don't Hate
the band sounded pretty good for not having all its original members, but drac's guitar solo sounded like chicken scratch, he has lost his smoothness and his chops, it does not happen to all guitar players, but for some there mind says one thing and there hands say another thing, but I do like the groove and it looks like they are having a good time and thats what its all about.
Tell it BWizer. Check Drac at 4:19, 4:27, 4:40 and 5:12 and tell me he ain't getting down. Sounds like 1977 to me... and I know because I was there. Long Live Slave, Drac and the Fungk. Give credit where it's due.
That caucasian group The Grateful Dead fatter than a motherfucker, but whitefolks flock to go see em,and they make a million aa concert them fat crackers, and they sit down on they ass and sing ,us blacks always dog our own,at least Drac aint sittin on his ass performing,he getting down.
Oldschool classic"..

If your head starts boppin' without you thinkin' about it, then it's FUNKY!
wmdbassplayer 2 years ago
Thanks Osan!!!

They need to ask the original drummer, Tim Dozier, as well as Floyd Miller, Carter Bradley, and Orion Whilohite.

Slave is still that shit! "Drac" Hicks is a super heavyweight, but he's still one of the baddest guitarists out there! Mark Adams (bass) is just as good as Verdine White! (No disrespect!)
defmaster88 2 years ago
ya crazy checkout larry graham funk original on youtube the god of bass playing they all got it from larrygraham
tonyskins19 2 years ago
Well, Mark Adams did admit that he was influenced by Larry Graham from the Sly & The Family Stone days & Graham is the pure legend & one of my favorites ("Release Yourself" is playin' on my computer now.) but he wasn't the only one..... But i'mma check da page.......
defmaster88 2 years ago
For those who think Slave is washed up don't ever forget they already been their done that, yeah I know they are not like the Police who can get back together after twenty five years and sell out every venue in an hour, but Slave just like The Bar Kays, Cameo ,Con Funk Shun, Dazz Band and the list goes on, made so many house parties, bbq's, clubs and radio stations rockin and those who were their to remember that era knows what im talkin about. Peace.
ronpc 2 years ago
I totally agree with you. I used this example. Why are The New Kids on the block playing Large arenas and the New Edition is playing night Clubs.?? They(White Fans) support their artist while we say things like"They're washed up" Truly sad........

Regardless to the weight gain, they were jamming and they sounded good to me!!
A party, birthday or otherwise was NOT jumping until "Slide" was played at least once. It is so good to see the old schoolers out there showing the young ones how its done!!

i thought there was a steve arrington not washington
cleopatrabonz 2 years ago
Yes, his last name was arrington. He is now a minister in Kettering, OH.
lepoetress 2 years ago
There was a Steve Washington & Steve Arrington. Washington was the unsung leader of the group & trumpet player. Arrington joined the group after "Slide" came out and was it's lead singer & drummer.... I may be late on the response, but this is the facts.
defmaster88 2 years ago
can you post the one from the album

if anybody knows , what happened to steve washington ? does he have a website??? how did drac put on so much weight ?// maybe some bands can;t comeback . where's danny webster ??

You're talking about Steve Arrington, who was singing with them. He's a minister in Kettering, OH. I can't recall the name of the church, I think something with Full of Love. They got older and started eating, I guess.

where are the new R & B bands
the New Issac Hayes.Curtis Mayfield, Quiny Jones,Teddy Riley,Kool &the gang
The old bands have to play their old stuff no problem Well there is a problem black radio won't play their new stuff anway

They are tight but he sucks on lead. The studio version has two or three good solos.. maybe his fingers got to fat... sorry bout that having fun still true ok second soloist is smother but he didn't play but three notes

Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire.. Maurice White's brother.... You are totally right about the list of bass players.... Don't forget: Michael Henderson, Keni Burke, Rick James, Byron Miller (George Duke), and of course the almighty Larry Graham.

I'd throw in Tony Maiden of Rufus and "Ready Freddy" Washington of Patrice Rushen/Al Jarreau affiliation. Praise to all the mighty thumpasaurs!
hork111 2 years ago

Teknishen04 3 years ago
in hendrix's time, he wasnt hte only one experimenting with funk, James Brown as well as Sly Stone , and many others, until it came into full fruition in the 70s, Parliament Funkadelic as well

well this interesting. The band very tight. Poor Drac. Living to high on the hog. Sound like the Orignal Drummer and Guitarists
ericcraig5150 3 years ago
This post is to add to BWizer's. How come we as black people direct so much contempt and negativity toward each other. When The Grateful Dead perform their caucasian fans come out in droves to exhalt them. But blacks on the other hand, we laugh and ridicule performers like Drac and others every chance we get, over B.S.. Thats one of the biggest reasons we have so many problems as a race... an almost hatred of ourselves.
maxfrenzi 3 years ago 4
I love Drac man, but he needs to stay healthy, otherwise I would go to this concert, no doubt about that, i know what you mean , its stupid , buts thats the way it goes
MUN7001 3 years ago
Slave hit it big in 78' - so did Van Halen. How come Van Halen can still pull in huge crowds and bands like Slave are looked at as "played out"? I told a friend of mine that I had a Slave on my iPod and he laughed at me.
Oh well, I'm glad Slave is still jammin'. I just wish Steve Arrington would perform with them agian.
brothaslide 3 years ago
hey do they still sell their music, where did you get their albums
MUN7001 3 years ago
the same reason New kids on the block are selling out the Am. Airlines Arena and The New Edition's playing night clubs... Loyalty from their fans...

I agree with you on this New Edition should be playinig Msg or any other arena out there not the Beacon and places like that.

The drummer is on some seroius funk , drac been suckin down too many 40's, gut!gut!gut!
moed51 3 years ago
drac needs to lower his cholesterol intake, before he dies of high blood pressure, we want to keep the funk healthy eh
MUN7001 3 years ago
the horns sound like shit; drac is gettin' huge but I guess we all do..he still has the licks tho'...keep funk alive
jameskerry41 3 years ago
Guess you just have to be a die-hard Slave fan to fully appreciate this video. For whatever reason, I see still the Slave of yesteryear. Just happy they are sill around. Don't Hate
maxfrenzi 3 years ago
the band sounded pretty good for not having all its original members, but drac's guitar solo sounded like chicken scratch, he has lost his smoothness and his chops, it does not happen to all guitar players, but for some there mind says one thing and there hands say another thing, but I do like the groove and it looks like they are having a good time and thats what its all about.
ozzinc 3 years ago
Tell it BWizer. Check Drac at 4:19, 4:27, 4:40 and 5:12 and tell me he ain't getting down. Sounds like 1977 to me... and I know because I was there. Long Live Slave, Drac and the Fungk. Give credit where it's due.
maxfrenzi 3 years ago
That caucasian group The Grateful Dead fatter than a motherfucker, but whitefolks flock to go see em,and they make a million aa concert them fat crackers, and they sit down on they ass and sing ,us blacks always dog our own,at least Drac aint sittin on his ass performing,he getting down.

Drac, more like Fat Back. LOL. Their glory days are definitely over. Drummer and bassist are the only ones that can be salvaged.
