What a heart-warming story. Really amazing. I can easily imagine how much you must still miss her. Thank you for writing. If you like, watch the other two movies we made called Pookie and his brother Puma. It's about how much they love each other.
i had a cat that was paralized at 2 yrs old her back legs black/orange tortie punkin (mommy) she got injured but she was amazing was also pregnant at the time 2 died one lived to be 10 yrs old her bladder was even paralized so 4 times a day i would lay her on the bathroom sink express her urine her poop was like a tootsie roll easy to clean up she was not in any pain she lived this way 11 plus yrs still miss her she died in 1991 use to drag her self just like pookie
:( my cat was grabbed by a dog and the dog got a good grip on her and shook her and then when I scared the dog away, she couldnt walk anymore.. Now she's paralyzed just like the cat shown in The video
continued: I wonder why he can't poop on his own. There are of course cat laxative creams. But the worse thing is if he is in pain. You have to determine if his pain is getting less every day. It's all about his quality of life. I am truly sorry to hear all this. What a nightmare you are all going through. I wish you all the luck in the world.
This is dreadful. He must be going through hell. You and your neighbors too. Expressing his bladder is very very simple, once someone shows you how to. You lie your cat on his side, by your sink, lift his tail or attach his tail with a hair clip, then put one hand under him and one over him, feel for the bladder, and apply pressure. If that works, then we won't pee on the floor and won't need a diaper. We do it three times a day. But having to put him in warm water to help him poop sounds bad.
Well he urinates a lot, I don't really know how to do his bladder like you do. Last night I had to put in half way in a warm bath to get his poop to get out... It's a lot of work my neighbors actually just gave him back to me a few minutes ago crying saying they took him to doctor and they cannot fix him. The bullet cannot be removed its in his spine. I don't know what to do...
But I took him home for a day to spend with him before I would put him down it's been 2days I haven't took him back. My neighbors want to take him, care for him. What is your opinion? He still eats, sleeps, he seems like he's in pain but I feel it's only because it was recent and it's still "healing". My neighbors want to take him to their doctor. Should I give him time to adjust? Was your cat confused at first about what happened to him? Did he struggle at first?
@Sweetheartmanda Your neighbors sound like amazingly kind & caring people, as you do. I wish you could get a 2nd vet's opinion. If the pellets cannot be removed from the spine, and if it will cause permanent pain and suffering, that's one thing. But if he will soon stop feeling discomfort, that's completely different. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing this. His appetite is a great sign though. Why not wait it out a bit and see how he does? Is it necessary for you to express his bladder?
Recently 2 days ago, I found my cat the was missing for 4 days. He was under the house and I called to him and he wouldnt come. I had to go under the house to rescue him. Took him to the vet, The doctor said he was probably hit by a car and had to take X-rays. They called me later that day and said he was shot by a bb pallet(metal) gun. He was hit through the side which entered his spine and is not paralyzed in the hind legs. I really don't want to put him down but the doctors say I should...
@Sweetheartmanda It is deeply shocking to read that people would sadistically shoot your cat. How awful.. I am really sorry for what you are both going through. I can only guess that if he is in pain, that must mean that he has feelings, and that can be good...that there is a chance for recovery... but it could also mean permanent suffering. I wish I could tell you. Our Pookie had no feeling from the very beginning because he was instantly paralyzed from severing his spinal chord in the fall.
Hi, so sorry to hear about the car accident... I don't know which supplement you are referring to.
Pookie was not allowed to move the first six weeks after his surgery. Our surgeon told us to keep him in a cage until then. When we let him out, six weeks later, he started to drag his hind legs, the way he does now. His front legs have always worked. What did your vet tell you? Good luck and keep us posted, if possible. Again, so sorry to hear about this terrible accident. Arlette
Our cat was hit by a car 3 days ago, and was totally OK (a miracle) except for some slight neurological damage causing him to have trouble walking. I was wondering what the supplement nabilfaezah /Jolie used? Anything that might help him! Thank you so much for this video =) =) How long did it take Pookie to learn to get around again? (This morning our guy dragged/toddled himself 5-6ft onto the front porch...it's been about 50 hrs since!) Thank you! =D
I just wanted to tell you, that people like you, give me hope that the world does have wonderful people left in it. Thank you so much for being an incredible human being, both of you. May God lay His blessings on you for the rest of your life, and your little Pookie. You have really touched my heart, thank you!
@dobbins2550 Thank you very much for your kind words. Pookie makes it easy to us to be the way we are. Pookie is a furry bundle of love and affection. Arlette
It's amazing to see people who love and care for their pets, even when it takes some extra time and effort. So many toss the pet out if it is at all inconvenient. I'm of the mind that once you take on a pet, you are responsible to care for the animal for it's entire life. Glad to see others feel the same way.
@felicianomiko I agree with you completely. When you love someone, it doesn't feel like time or effort. We are so grateful that Pookie pulled through - he gives us so much joy. Thank you for your letter. Nice to know that there are others who agree. Arlette
You will have to ask your vet about diapers. Hopefully the doctor will be able to show you how to express his/her bladder. Is the paralysis permanent?
If you can express the bladder, then no diapers will be necessary. If you need diapers, try the smallest size possible, and cut out a hole for the tail. Good luck and please keep us posted. Feel free to write for further advice and I'll try to help.
Doing that makes you an amazingly special person. I am deeply moved.
Please let us know if you need any specific information we might be able to help you with since we might know a few shortcuts. And I hope you enjoy the other two youtubes we made about Pookie and his brother Puma. Arlette
We do not give them taurine supplements. It is my understanding that much taurine is destroyed by heat so there is no danger of that happening with raw meat but you can easily google that info to be sure. Pookie never has sores but luckily we have smooth wooden floors. Perhaps that might happen with wall to wall carpeting. Thank you for your sweet letters. Yes, Pookie and Puma love each other very much!
my cat 'jolie' seem to recovered after taking the neurosupplement...what a miracles guys.!!! she can walk but not as usual and she can urinate and defecate like normal...thank GOD...i'm really2 happy and luckily i don't put her to sleep...what a relieved...thanks guys 4 all ur support and guides.
Hi, so sorry for this late response and I truly hope that it is not too late. We were on vacation all week. How is Jolie doing? Good, I hope! I cannot give you any advice on her stools as we don't have that problem with Pookie who poops once a day, wherever he happens to be. But I do know that you can massage it out. Please send me an update. And feel free to write directly to: stuip@planet.nl
hai there, u'r video give me some spirit to take care of my cat "jolie". she's been paralyzed for 1 week..and vet suggest me to put her to sleep if we doesn't have time to take care of her..right now my problem is that, i don't know how to flush the stool out of her. the pee session i'm still learning but still got into trouble sometimes...can u give me some advice regarding this matter? thanks a lot..
Thank you for posting this video. I just had a kitten, Amelia Pond, pass away today and seeing this video lifted my spirits. Give Pookie and Puma a hug for me.
@orenjinotaiyou1 Oh no... what a sad day this must be... I am so very sorry for your loss. In your short letter, it came across strongly how much she was loved. I just hugged Pookie and Puma for you as I whispered in their ears about Amelia Pond...
@ArletteNL i had a paralyzed cat. she had been paralyzed for 1 week. i've already consult many vet and most of them suggest me to put her to sleep if i doesn't have time to take care of her...i don't have a heart to put her to sleep...our problem is now is to flush the stool out of her big intestine. could u suggest me anything regarding this matter? and what extra things that i should take as for precaution? i've really appreciate your help...thank a lot
@nabilfaezah hello, I hope you have found the way flush the stool out of her. If it`s still useful to say, I do like this: I gently squeeze her abdomen from the top ( just under chest`s bones) to the pelvis, trying to pull down the stool that can be felt by your fingers. I need to do that around 3 times and then it comes near the anus, making that part swelling. Once it gets close to the "exit" , I press the bulge and verything comes out. If the stool stayed in
@nabilfaezah for too long, it must be removed surgically. You can even give her a spoon of olive oil once per day to make feaces softer and use baby`s enemas to help her defecating. I usually wash her ass after this, in order to prevent infections, but you can use wipes as well. Wish you good luck with your "baby" and please, don`t kill her...
Your letter was so sad to read. Yes, this is unfortunately what vets too often advise. We have no idea why... Please don't blame yourself. We believe that doctors know best and we don't want our kitties to suffer. Teddy sounds like a truly loved cat who is sorely missed. Have you ever read the Tenth Good Thing About Barney? It's also about a maple tree. You would love it. Once again, very sorry to read about this sad sad ordeal... Arlette
OMG! This breaks my heart. Last year our cat Teddy was hit by a car and paralyzed in the back legs also. We were told by the vet to put him to sleep. I didn't want to because I thought, he'll adapt. I wish I had seen this video then, instead of listening to the vet. Teddy is buried under our big maple tree.
Hi, so sorry to hear about MJ. Have you taken her to a vet? And also checked for rabies? To find the bladder, we lay our cat down on his side, hold up his tail (with a hariclip attached to wall) and put one hand under him - all this by the flat surface by the kitchen sink. We place our other hand on top of him and feel for the bladder. It;s the size of a hard boiled egg or a ping pong ball. Then we softly apply pressure. You can see this in the YouTube. More questions, please feel free to ask.
My cat MJ is also paralyzed. We think she may have gotten attacked by a raccoon. Everyone I talk to has said to put her down. I'm so glad I saw this video. She's just starting to pull herself around the house (she was in shock for about 2 days) she's been urinating on herself and that is a major concern because our house is carpeted. How do you find the bladder? If we do the same thing you showed in the video will she still go on herself?
Hi, we were just in the USA and found 2 brands of frozen meat there: Country Pet Natural, and Paw Naturaw organic chicken, etc. Here in Holland, we buy Carnibest, and also Bandit. It's raw meat, incl. organ meat and bone. One suggestion would be to get a curved rope ramp to make is easier to climb in and out of the litter box without dragging a lot of litter out. I am so happy to hear that your cat is not in pain. I wish you luck!
Hi, thank you for your letter. I'm wondering if it's a wild cat, and if so, if it's hard for you to nurse him back to health. Is he able to relieve himself without human help? Either way, I wish you all the luck and success in the world. Arlette
I'm very thankful you have shared this. Recently one of the stay cats in my backyard had kittens and one of them is paralyzed, I'm not sure if my dog got it or not. but now I'm attempting to nurse some health into it. It's already super fast as it is. :)
Hi Sorry to hear about your cat's fall... Our floor is very smooth wood (laminated wood) and it causes no wounds. Perhaps a rug might cause a burn, if he went really fast, and would prevent smooth sliding. A rug would not be fun, unless it was a smooth nylon rug, I'm guessing. Kindly, Arlette
Hello my cat has the same problem - it fell from the fifth floor. I want to ask you this - when he walks does he receive any wounds on legs from crawling ?
I am so very very sorry to hear that you lost your beloved cat. My heart goes out to you. I can easily imagine the huge empty space in your heart and soul and home since he is gone. I am really sorry for your loss... Arlette
Hello Arlette and family, I just wanted to tell you how much happy this video made me feel. I actually came across it on Saturday and it gave me so much hope thinking that my beloved cat will recover. However, after trying everything we had to put him to sleep, it was the only way, and i am completely shattered. I really hope he is happy in heaven but will be greatly missed by family. Thank you for all you do, you are amazing people. Greetings from Australia.
This is very useful information as that is usually the first question people ask, and we only know about the Dutch market. I hope this new diet will help. Won't you please keep me posted so that I can recommend it to others. Good luck! Arlette
In the the U. S. there are a few frozen, raw products, I found out today. Once of the very best is Nature's Variety. It is 95% meat/bone mix, 5% veggies and fruit, with meat being the highest percentage - being listed first. No grains or fillers in their product at all. Hoping it helps us with our cat's situation too. :-)
I'm sorry Pookie got hurt, that must have been frightening to say the least, but you are fantastic caretakers and Pookie looks awesome and happy with his brother. I like your apartment! Cheers and respect and blessings from California. :)
Swimming therapy might help strengthen her legs. Look it up on youtube. Our Dutch frozen raw meat cat food is very hard to find in the USA. You might have to make it yourself. Let us know if you'd like a list of the ingredients. It's made with organ meats, bone, and rice, all ground up. We also give our cats raw chicken wings. Perhaps cutting out part of the litter box to lower the entrance might help her get in. Good luck. Check out the next 2 youtubes we made of Pookie & Puma.
Very glad to have found this your video tonight. Our cat had hip surgery and since then has been using her legs less and less, not even going all the way into the litter box to do her business this morning. We have to exercise her legs to get them strong as she has to learn to walk all over again. I have to get that food you mentioned as she is making a mess of herself and the house lately. Thanks as this has given me hope. X O
Sorry to hear about Cassidy. Have you taken him to the vet for an x-ray? Is there surgery possibility? Do you know what is broken? Is he walking ? His sister will hiss if Cassidy came back from the vet because his smell would be different. This is normal. Or she if she felt that something very different were going on. This too is normal. You might try rubbing Cassidy's jaw bone (where his scent is) and then rubbing this smell on his sister so that they smell alike again. Pls keep us posted.
Thank you for this video. Our cat, Cassidy, became paralyzed three nights ago though we don't know how. We suspect that he fell from the roof where he regularly catches mice at night. I am having difficulty expressing his bladder effectively. It seems that he begins leaking urine after only a couple of hours and I cannot get a strong stream like you do in the vid.
Also, his sister who was formerly close with him is refusing him now, hissing if I put her near him. ??
This video is very helpful. I'm from Indonesia and my cat Pangpang is paralyzed few days ago, and I'm so confuse about how to take care of my cat. What do you think I must prepare for this condition? Where can i get something like Pookie wheelchair?
@katatienna I'm so sorry to hear about Pangpang. What happened? How old is your cat? As we mentioned in the youtube video, Pookie does not like his wheelchair so we never use. it. He is fine walking on his front paws. Can Pangpang get around easily? I think that wheelchairs are much better for dogs. Ween Pookie was in his chair, he could not sit or lie or climb or rest, and he bumped into all the furniture and doorways. How can I help you further? Arlette
@ArletteNL Thanks for reply. My Pangpang is about 1 years old. The doctor said something about calcium deficiency, and Pangpang get calcium injection few times. Now Pangpang is getting better and can walk around the house, even not quite straight. :D
Hello. I was inpired by this video to adopt a paralyzed rescue cat. I was very curious on the diet meat that you give them. Can you give me the name and spelling so I can research it? Bless you!
@racif Hi there. We were very touched to hear that you were inspired to adopt a paralyzed cat. This is really beautiful. You must be a very caring person. The frozen raw meat we buy is called Bandit and Carnibest. We buy it in pet shops in the Netherlands. It's ground up organ meat and bone and rice. Pookie poops once a day and it's odorless and hard, so easy to pick up. Won't you please keep us posted? Would love to hear how your kitty does. Arlette (p.s. check out the other 2 youtubes)
the closer it is to you, the better. you want the raw meat to be as fresh as possible. check with the butchers in your area for scrap meat they don't sell, you can also check out mypetcarnivore (dot) com. that is there i get my dog's meat from. always make sure to mix water in with the meat, the urinary crystals is from a lack of water in the diet and cats rarely drink enough on their own. good luck! :)
You guys are well educated pet owners. Those cats are lucky to have you two as their owners! I am switching my cats over to a raw diet (just bought the grinder) after feeding them wellness core for more than a year. I am reading too many stories about cats developing urinary crystals and it's time I switch their diet. As a college student, I didn't switch them because I blamed the cost of wet food, but I can easily skip some fast food meals to make up for the cost.
@danipgirl Orange male cats are prone to bladder crystals. Pookie developed this event though we were feeding him raw food. The vet considered amputating his penis because he could no longer pee when we expressed his bladder. We were lucky to solve this by giving him one daily capsule of cranberry powder (sold for people) and some vitamin C powder. We also switched to the raw frozen meat which is special for cats with kidney problems, and alternate with canned food against bladder crystals.
Thank you. Glad you liked it. You are right, the only reason we did this was in the hope of saving just one life. But many people have written saying that they reconsidered euthanasia now that they knew their options, You might also enjoy the next two clips we made about Pookie playing with his brother Puma.
I am so impressed with all you've done to care for your cat, Pookie. And that you've taken the time to make this video and share it with others. Thank you so very much. I think it will give others a lot of hope and I'm also positive it will save at least one cat from being euthanized when it's owner realizes a cat can live perfectly happy and healthy after being paralyzed. I also like that you point out wheelchairs aren't the greatest thing for cats, bc they can't lie down, get stuck, etc.
Thank you for uploading this :) My cat got hit by a car two days ago and his tailbone has been dislocated from the spine. He can urinate, but we are still waiting to see if he can poop. I was worried about having to put him down if he is unable to permanently, but watching your video gave me some hope.
@GoTmEmEmOrIsEdD I am sorry to hear about this terrible car accident. I hope that your cat is not in great pain. Can he walk? Very happy to hear that our video gave you hope. This is the only reason we made it. Check out the next two we made about Pookie playing with his brother Puma, and you will be 100% convinced. Won't you please keep me posted about his being able to poop. I wish you all the luck in the world. Arlette
@ArletteNL At the moment, he is still at the vets on strong painkillers awaiting tail amputation, he can walk alright, his hips escaped damage, amazingly. Thank you for replying, I'll definitely watch your videos. I'll also keep you updated. Thanks Arlette :)
@GoTmEmEmOrIsEdD Oh, what a relief, such wonderful news, it made my day. I can imagine how happy you must be. Yes, please keep us updated. Wonderful! Arlette
@GoTmEmEmOrIsEdD I hope your cat is ok...and I'm very glad that you found the video of Pookie. It's is truly inspirational! I will say some prayers for your cat <3
@rysdin I'm wishing all the luck in the world. Also let me know if this doctor is a vet. If it works, we will fly to Bangkok with Pookie! (We love Thailand.)
@ArletteNL Unfortunately, my “Remy” didn’t make it. The doctor said in her case the acupuncture can’t help. The doctor found out that Remy had problem with her heart, which caused blood clog all over her body. Paralyzed legs were just the first sign. She passed away in this evening while I was visiting her. I’m missing her so much. The doctor said if the paralyzed legs caused by an accident or dog bite, it would have much more chance to heal.
@ArletteNL BTW, the doctor who performs acupuncture is a vet. I’ll ask the doctor about your Pookie’s condition and let you know her opinion. Anyway there’s a paralyzed cat that she performed acupuncture on and now that cat can actually walk. However you must understand that there’s no 100% guarantee. I’ll keep in touch. It will be great if you could send me Pookie's medical records or more information about his injury. My email is rysdin@yahoo.com.
Won't you please keep in touch and let me know if the acupuncture and/or hydrotherapy help restore any feeling, or improve your cat's condition in any way. I hope that your cat is healthy and doing well. Sorry to hear about his accident... Sawadika
Your videos really give me hope on my newly paralyzed cat. ^_^ Thank you very much. BTW, I did my research. In my town, there is acupuncture for cat, which I'm really interested and also hydrotherapy. BTW, I live in Bangkok, Thailand.
Inspiring video, Pookie seems very happy. I have a cat named Puma too. He had a spinal injury almost 2 yrs ago but I was lucky, he regained full use of his back legs within a week and I only had to have his tail removed a year later. He's totally normal and has a buddy named Bittle to hang with now.
Thank you so much for making this video! Our kitty Athena was hit by a car and has pins in her pelvis and an amputated tail. I have mastered the urine expression part of her paralysis thanks to your instructions. Could you please spell the name of that special food Pookie and Puma eat? Little olive pits would be better than the no warning mess we are dealing with now.
@217kmarie Glad to hear that the tips helped. Something as small as a hairclip makes it possible for one person to do it alone. Our cat food can probably only be bought in Holland. It's fresh raw meat. One is called Carnibest and the other, Bandit. They come in small frozen containers. Maybe I exaggerated when I compared his poops to olive pit size but they are definitely hard and odorless. And yes, they are always without warning, but usually only come when fancy guests arrive for dinner.
I love how he is still very playful and doesnt realy let not having the use of his back legs bother him. do have a question though, does his brother seem to take advantige of him not having the use of all four legs(i.e when they are playing, is he some times mean?) I know it is a very dumb question but I am just curious=)
you can so tell that your cats are Loved very much and they are Beutiful cats=)
@jsrcamp This is not a dumb question. His brother Puma does not bully him. They are equally strong. But when Puma bites him in the lower limbs, Pookie does not feel it, so we gently push Puma away. Puma is not mean, he is a super gentle kitty.
This is the best video available to help me with my newly paralyzed cat. Thank you. I have noticed my cat itches and formally used her hind legs to scratch her neck area. What is a good solution or what does someone use for a cat to be able to satisfy an itch?
@ccavegirl We know that when our cat turns his head a certain way, he means to scratch with his back paws, like he used to be able to do. We then either scratch him with our hands, or we pull our the hairbrush and he comes running to us. We have not yet figured out any other way. It is frustrating to think of this happening when we are not at home. Please let us know if you ever figure out a better system. And good luck with taking care of your newly paralyzed cat.
His has not really wanted to eat, yesterday we hand fed him one sardine, and I will be doing the same in about 15 minutes as it has now been another 24 hrs since he ate. I tried this morning he didnt want to eat.
So no he is not eating much, but you can see he needs to poo as well it is just that his muscles and nerves are not working at the moment to do this. We are not sure whether this will return as yet or not.
@TheSarahjanebeal This is very worrisome. I would find another vet immediately. He needs to poo. I'm not sure that the muscles and nerves would prevent this since our cat is paralyzed so has no nerve or muscle feeling from the waist down, and still poos. I would not wait until Wednesday to do this. A vet can put a finger in the anus or can give your cat an enema. Good luck. I hope this works. A bad appetite is a bad sign. Please keep me posted.
aggg I tried this last night and wasnt successful at all :o( he just growled and got angry at me. What worries me also is that we have to take him back to the vet next wednesday, he hasnt volunterily used his bladder, but has been leaking nor has he been able to poo can I do anything to thelp that along do you know? The vet said if he doesnt start using these he should be put to sleep I dont want that! pls help with any suggestions I love my cat dearly and will do anything for him to help
@TheSarahjanebeal I am sorry to hear this. There are several things you could do. I hope the vet showed you how to express his bladder. In the beginning, it's easier with 2 people. We talk to pookie, caress him, wait until he is purring, then pick him up and place him on a towel before putting his tail in the hairclip and pushing down on his bladder, by the sink. If you have a second person petting him at the same time, he might not get scared and growl. Will cont. on part 2.
@ArletteNL The vet is nice, Arnold (the cat) is not eating alot though, (1 sardine) his tail has no movement and as yet we are not sure of all the nerve damage, he is walking slowly so he is not paralysed which is good. This only all happened on Wednesday morning. So it is all new injuries. Do you think I still need to express his bladder is he is leaking urine? The vet ran through it with us quickly but he said that it is hard for people to pick up. Thats why I been searching for answers.

@TheSarahjanebeal part 2: in the meantime, you could buy the smallest diaper (and make a hole for the tail) or ask the vet to put in a catheter with a plug, so the urine doesn't leak and smell up the house. For his poo, you could give him a meat-tasting cream to help his bowels, if he is constipated. Or the vet could remove the poo manually. We give raw food which is full of bones, never dry food. Does he have an appetite? Do you like & trust your vet? Is your cat paralyzed? Is his spine broken?
Hi I am having to learn to do this for out cat as he was in some sort of trauma we dont know what someone did to him. I have to try to express his bladder the vet said we are hoping he is going to improve
@TheSarahjanebeal Hi, if you need any tips or advice about expressing his bladder, please let us know and perhaps we can send you some. Must be horrible not even knowing how his accident happened... Best of luck. Arlette
Oh you guys are wonderful! This clip is very helpful and shows your love to the animals. I have a cat myself, she is healthy and ok, but if something similar would ever happen to her, thanks to your video I know what to do :-)
Once agian, you are great people and what you have done to make his life easier is just breathtaking. Thank you, very, very much. I wsh all of you all the best
@martushka25 Thank you so much for your heartfelt letter. I hope that your cat stays healthy and happy! If you want to see more cool videos, look at the latest we made called Pookie and Puma parts 1 and 2. We are trying to invent a wagon system that Pookie will like. If it works, we will make a new film! Thanks again for writing us. Arlette
He was hit by a car. The impact caused a broken tail and leg.
When we were told he was paralyzed from the waist down I had to look it up. When I saw this video I realized "My cat isn't paralyzed!" He will walk again some day.
Because of the fracture resulting in nerve damage on the tail, this injury may cause incontinence, I showed this video to my parents. And they said, "We can do this for him."
@Bibbly53 Your story brought tears to my eyes. I am very sorry that your cat was hit by a car, how horrible. I hope that he is not in pain or suffering. I am so happy to know that we could help keep him alive, thank you for letting us know. I'm sure that with your tender loving care, he will have a great quality of life and be a happy cat. If his spine wasn't broken, you are very lucky. if you wish to see Pookie playing with his brother Puma, look for those 2 Youtubes. Keep us posted.
@ArletteNL Week ago as of this posting, my cat was put down.
On the morning of September 9th, while getting him ready for his morning appointment I noticed what at the time looked like skin that he had possibly licked raw, upon further inspection I found it was some kind of residue.
Originally, this appointment was for blood testing to make sure he would be ready for surgery.
Instead, after showing the vet this questionable patch the result was horrifying.
@Bibbly53 First the vet gasped, which isn't good, she then began to say "Oh dear." over and over again.
Applying pressure to the area she told my mother and I to look away.
We were told he developed an abscess in his fracture and that what I saw that morning was discharge.
We were informed that this meant the tissue which had appeared to be bruising was actually dead. Not numb, physically, anatomically dead. And that his body was trying to destroy the damaged area of his body.
@Bibbly53 Initially when we were told 'His tail is dead and will need to be removed' I thought, "O.K. his tail is numb, he can't feel it and it won't get proper circulation."
@Bibbly53 This wasn't the case. The tail became necrotic.
Coming to terms with this has been difficult for my family. He was only a year and a half old, fostered from a kitten. We loved him very much. In spite of these events, your story gave us hope when there seemed to be none. In addition, I can only wish that this story continues to be an inspirational one.
@123zeldafan1 Perhaps she has nerve damage since the glass door fell on her? Or crushed bones? It could be a number of things. Perhaps her non-movement is her way of protecting herself from pain. Have you taken her to a vet for an x-ray? I don't know how long ago this happened or what the doctor said so it's impossible to guess. But if it were only her paw, I would imagine that she'd be limping, not lying motionless all day... This is worrisome. Please keep me posted. And see a vet!
Hi there blacky now has wheels in the hope to get him gooing again he still has a straight leg which he will not bend but this came on after the injury so i think he is holding it straight. Your cat looks so happy as does mine sadly we have had alot of critisim that its cruel to keep a cat like thhis. Way we see it hes happy and hes healing. You can check out my vids if u want
@blacksrocks I told those people who criticized me for not condemning our cat to death that I was happy not to be their spouse and coming down with the flue, ha. Our surgeon recently told us that when his patients are making the decision, he gives them the links to our 3 movies. Seeing is believing, and once people watch, they are left without this grotesque argument. I wish that Blacky could go to swimming therapy for his straight leg.
He had a catheter in the hospital until yesterday. We are espressing him (or trying). So far its going OK, but a little intimidating since we are around the area of his surgery. He is still sitting, standing and even walking a bit (very wobbly and for a short time to turn around in his cage). We are looking forward to getting into a routine with his bladder and bowels and getting through the 6 weeks of restricted movement. Will keep you posted.
@mankyholds If you are expressing him, this means that he is not incontinent which means there won't be a constant and smelly urine drip and you will not need diapers. This will make things 100 times easier, since expressing is only three times a day and takes 10 seconds. But the hind leg movement is truly wonderful and gives the most hope. Thank you so much for the updates. Hope to hear more!
This vid is great. My cat was hit by a car 5 weeks ago was left paralysed in rear legs, no bladder control. We had to express him. however he has regained feeling iin his feet an has deep pain response. He also has bladder control and bowel. Some accidents thou. He is 6 weekcage rest. He still cant walk, but can stand on limbs for short time to turn. vet gave him 6 mths as no broken bones just nerve damage they may heal. He now has one knucled paw one straight leg its only gone that way week
@blacksrocks Your poor cat and you...what a trauma. But these are good signs. Pain response is the opposite of paralysis. I hope for full nerve regeneration. The healing time of the nerves will depend on the severity of the damage. It sounds as if he has improved a lot in 5 short weeks. I hope he is not too lonely in his cage but rest is so important. Pookie and Puma send their best to your kitty. Won't you please keep me posted. The best of luck, Arlette
@blacksrocks Thanks sweetie. Yeah we hoping for alot more improvemnet he has some tail twitching going on now so thats even more btter. Your vid is great it shows that cats can still live happy lives. I would love to remain looking after blacky but the vet says if he doesnt improve and cant walk in 6mths that he has no quality of life.
Arlette - our boy is now 48 hours post surgery. He is moving both of his legs and even stood for a few seconds while turning over to lay on his other side! He is more alert and responsive, wanting pets and purring. We are very hopeful for an excellent long term recovery with his legs. The incontinence is more uncertain, wether or not he will regain any function there (his tail had to be amputated). Needless to say, we are beyond thrilled with the progress and cant wait to get our baby home!
@mankyholds Oh, that is terrific news. Thanks so much for the update. Petting and purring are such good signs. And he stood! That's amazing. You are so lucky. Please keep me posted. I am thinking of your kitty all the time. Does he have a catheter now or is he wearing a diaper or do you have to espress his bladder? Perhaps it is too soon to tell. Good luck!! Arlette
OMG! This is the most amazing thing I have seen yet! Pookie is an amazing baby and his humans are REALLY amazing. To do what you are doing is simply the most heart warming things I have seen in a long time and you have made this look so easy taking care of him.. Please don't tell him he is handicapped, if you don't he will never know.. I am SO impressed with him and his humans!
@Meowmie707 Awwww, that's so sweet! Thank you! No, you are right, we wouldn't dream of telling Pookie he was handicapped. Never! Watching Pookie and his brother Puma interact is so fun. We are in the process of making a new movie about a day in the life of Pookie Puma. Coming to a theater near you, soon!
@ArletteNL I am going to subscribe so I can see anymore you post on him. I posted this vid on my fb page so everyone can see how easy you have made his care look, there are LOTS of really neat tips and hints you have in this vid that can and WILL help many people.. Like that raw chicken wing thing. I have a CH'er that has taught me SO much, her vid is on YT if you don't know what CH is. It mostly effects her back legs so seeing this HAS helped me too! THANKS!
@Meowmie707 I had never heard of CH before now and was extremely moved by the youtubes I just watched. What's the name of your video clip? Thank you for this positive feedback. When we made the film it was in the hope that we would be helping another kitty somewhere, so your response was delightful.
@Meowmie707 I have also shared this on a cat forum I am a member of and some are sharing it with their VET and I have shared it with mine so you will probably see a surge of views.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. It was the saving grace to me in the wee hours of the night while waiting to see if our kitty (hit by a car), would stabalize and agonizing over the info we were provided. The vet was not optimistic about recovery, use of hind legs or continence. After seeing your kitty, I was both inspired and ever so grateful to see there ARE other options. Today our kitty had surgery and the surgeon is optimistic that he will be able to walk again!
@mankyholds I held my breath as I read your letter. I am so sorry about this horrible accident. I empathize with the nightmare you experienced and thrilled to hear that your kitty survived. What a relief to hear that the surgery went well. Won't you please please keep us posted about developments and feel free to write about anything we can do to help. arlette1@planet.nl
Awwww i have a crippled cat to. He was that bad, but slowly got better and he can actually walk now. I have no idea what caused it. But your kitty is so lucky to have you.
@desimeray You are so lucky!! I am very happy to hear this amazing news. Our surgeon said that these nerve cells can actually regenerate. Thanks for your note.
And watch out for a new Pookie and Puma YouTube coming soon to a theater near you! We are now making a movie only about how they play and cuddle all day. Glad it made you smile...
wonderful cats! instead of feeling pity for pookie, he just kept making me smile =) lively and happy cats! if only every other cat were that lucky to live with you. =)
This is such a great video. I hope it inspires people to re-evaluate the idea that euthanasia is only 'fair' option for an impaired pet. You have showed the ease of caring for Pookie beautifully!
I had a paralyzed cat that I expressed the bladder for 13yrs. He was stray I adopted like that, he died after a reoccurrance of lymphoma that did not respond again to chemo. He was about 17yrs old. He had happy, full life. You both are putting out absolutly wonderful info!!! Thank You, jane
Dear Jane, Thank you for your uplifting letter. It's wonderful to hear that cats like these can live to be 17 years old. You really really cheered me up because only a few moments ago, someone was telling me what short lives they had and it made me unbearably sad... It's amazing that you adopted a cat already with that problem. Your story is the inspiring one here. I wish everyone were like you...
My kitty never had an issue in the 13+ yrs related to his paralysis. The vet that intially treated him with said he would need to be euthanised if he failed to respond but by time I realized this was it for him...he was happy & adjusted. Vet swore I would have to euthanise due to urinary problems (infections, blockage) in less than 6 months.I said I would give him best I could for whatever time he had. I think length of life for these guys is multifaceted.
Hier nog een Nederlandse kattenliefhebber, prachtig hoe jullie er voor je kat zijn. En de andere kat is zeker ook een goeie steun! Een mooie en inspirerende video, zo te zien zijn jullie huisdieren erg gelukkig!
you two are amazing! it was so nice to see how much you care for your little furry guys and how much they love each other and can overcome difficulties in life. thankyou for sharing that, i hope you don't mind, i am going to post it on my facebook page. i love inspiring videos.
The way you care for Pookie is absolutely amazing! You really must love him. I have a paralyzed cat myself, she's been like this all her life, it's nice to know that there are other cats in the same situation =)
We just recently found your video. our cat is unable to use bladder and we were unsure if the thought of caring for her was even possible. Your video has given us hope and great joy to know it is a realilistic. thx you Tristan and sean McNally
Dear Tristan and Sean, this is heart-warming news, and really the only reason we posted this movie. We wanted folks like yourselves to know it was do-able and simple. Please keep us posted as we will be thinking of your kitty. And don't forget the hair clip! Good luck and we really hope this will work on your end.
Thank you! We want to make another movie soon and just show Pookie and Puma playing together and hugging each other. They lick our faces so much that we're afraid people will think we rubbed some food on our forehead!
i love to see how dedicated you are to your cat and how much you love him alot of people would get rid of their cats if they where paralyzed so its nice to see this. =)
Thank you for your response. We have one heart. It's the same heart for loving people as it is for loving animals. To be honest, we've never thought of it as kind or dedicated. We just can't picture our life without our kitties in it. We were so happy that he survived his fall, every day is a joy and a gift with him and his brother.
Working as a vet tech, I only see a handful of owners with this kind of dedication. It's so great to see someone this dedicated to their pet. Love the raw feeding too! :)
Thank you for your wonderful words. Coming from a vet tech who must see so much, they mean a lot. The only reason we made this movie was in the hope of saving some lives. We figured that once people saw how do-able it all was, they would not automatically jump to the wrong (shudder) decision.

How awful. How long ago did this happen? What did the vet say? Is it permanent?
ArletteNL 3 weeks ago
:( my cat was grabbed by a dog and the dog got a good grip on her and shook her and then when I scared the dog away, she couldnt walk anymore.. Now she's paralyzed just like the cat shown in The video
xDoc077 3 weeks ago
continued: I wonder why he can't poop on his own. There are of course cat laxative creams. But the worse thing is if he is in pain. You have to determine if his pain is getting less every day. It's all about his quality of life. I am truly sorry to hear all this. What a nightmare you are all going through. I wish you all the luck in the world.
ArletteNL 1 month ago
This is dreadful. He must be going through hell. You and your neighbors too. Expressing his bladder is very very simple, once someone shows you how to. You lie your cat on his side, by your sink, lift his tail or attach his tail with a hair clip, then put one hand under him and one over him, feel for the bladder, and apply pressure. If that works, then we won't pee on the floor and won't need a diaper. We do it three times a day. But having to put him in warm water to help him poop sounds bad.
ArletteNL 1 month ago
Well he urinates a lot, I don't really know how to do his bladder like you do. Last night I had to put in half way in a warm bath to get his poop to get out... It's a lot of work my neighbors actually just gave him back to me a few minutes ago crying saying they took him to doctor and they cannot fix him. The bullet cannot be removed its in his spine. I don't know what to do...
Sweetheartmanda 1 month ago
But I took him home for a day to spend with him before I would put him down it's been 2days I haven't took him back. My neighbors want to take him, care for him. What is your opinion? He still eats, sleeps, he seems like he's in pain but I feel it's only because it was recent and it's still "healing". My neighbors want to take him to their doctor. Should I give him time to adjust? Was your cat confused at first about what happened to him? Did he struggle at first?
Sweetheartmanda 1 month ago
@Sweetheartmanda Your neighbors sound like amazingly kind & caring people, as you do. I wish you could get a 2nd vet's opinion. If the pellets cannot be removed from the spine, and if it will cause permanent pain and suffering, that's one thing. But if he will soon stop feeling discomfort, that's completely different. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing this. His appetite is a great sign though. Why not wait it out a bit and see how he does? Is it necessary for you to express his bladder?
ArletteNL 1 month ago
Recently 2 days ago, I found my cat the was missing for 4 days. He was under the house and I called to him and he wouldnt come. I had to go under the house to rescue him. Took him to the vet, The doctor said he was probably hit by a car and had to take X-rays. They called me later that day and said he was shot by a bb pallet(metal) gun. He was hit through the side which entered his spine and is not paralyzed in the hind legs. I really don't want to put him down but the doctors say I should...
Sweetheartmanda 1 month ago
@Sweetheartmanda It is deeply shocking to read that people would sadistically shoot your cat. How awful.. I am really sorry for what you are both going through. I can only guess that if he is in pain, that must mean that he has feelings, and that can be good...that there is a chance for recovery... but it could also mean permanent suffering. I wish I could tell you. Our Pookie had no feeling from the very beginning because he was instantly paralyzed from severing his spinal chord in the fall.
ArletteNL 1 month ago
Hi, so sorry to hear about the car accident... I don't know which supplement you are referring to.
Pookie was not allowed to move the first six weeks after his surgery. Our surgeon told us to keep him in a cage until then. When we let him out, six weeks later, he started to drag his hind legs, the way he does now. His front legs have always worked. What did your vet tell you? Good luck and keep us posted, if possible. Again, so sorry to hear about this terrible accident. Arlette
ArletteNL 2 months ago
Our cat was hit by a car 3 days ago, and was totally OK (a miracle) except for some slight neurological damage causing him to have trouble walking. I was wondering what the supplement nabilfaezah /Jolie used? Anything that might help him! Thank you so much for this video =) =) How long did it take Pookie to learn to get around again? (This morning our guy dragged/toddled himself 5-6ft onto the front porch...it's been about 50 hrs since!) Thank you! =D

It's amazing to see people who love and care for their pets, even when it takes some extra time and effort. So many toss the pet out if it is at all inconvenient. I'm of the mind that once you take on a pet, you are responsible to care for the animal for it's entire life. Glad to see others feel the same way.
felicianomiko 2 months ago
@felicianomiko I agree with you completely. When you love someone, it doesn't feel like time or effort. We are so grateful that Pookie pulled through - he gives us so much joy. Thank you for your letter. Nice to know that there are others who agree. Arlette

i have a paralysed kitten... n she's having incontinence....
Jewellelux 4 months ago
So sorry to hear about this terrible accident.

ArletteNL 6 months ago
How do you keep him from getting sores on his legs from dragging them? Pookie & Pum obviously love eachother very much!! Sweet!

@ArletteNL i had a paralyzed cat. she had been paralyzed for 1 week. i've already consult many vet and most of them suggest me to put her to sleep if i doesn't have time to take care of her...i don't have a heart to put her to sleep...our problem is now is to flush the stool out of her big intestine. could u suggest me anything regarding this matter? and what extra things that i should take as for precaution? i've really appreciate your help...thank a lot
nabilfaezah 8 months ago
@nabilfaezah hello, I hope you have found the way flush the stool out of her. If it`s still useful to say, I do like this: I gently squeeze her abdomen from the top ( just under chest`s bones) to the pelvis, trying to pull down the stool that can be felt by your fingers. I need to do that around 3 times and then it comes near the anus, making that part swelling. Once it gets close to the "exit" , I press the bulge and verything comes out. If the stool stayed in
lindaki87 7 months ago
@nabilfaezah for too long, it must be removed surgically. You can even give her a spoon of olive oil once per day to make feaces softer and use baby`s enemas to help her defecating. I usually wash her ass after this, in order to prevent infections, but you can use wipes as well. Wish you good luck with your "baby" and please, don`t kill her...
lindaki87 7 months ago
Your letter was so sad to read. Yes, this is unfortunately what vets too often advise. We have no idea why... Please don't blame yourself. We believe that doctors know best and we don't want our kitties to suffer. Teddy sounds like a truly loved cat who is sorely missed. Have you ever read the Tenth Good Thing About Barney? It's also about a maple tree. You would love it. Once again, very sorry to read about this sad sad ordeal... Arlette
ArletteNL 9 months ago

ArletteNL 10 months ago

ArletteNL 1 year ago
Thank you for this video. Our cat, Cassidy, became paralyzed three nights ago though we don't know how. We suspect that he fell from the roof where he regularly catches mice at night. I am having difficulty expressing his bladder effectively. It seems that he begins leaking urine after only a couple of hours and I cannot get a strong stream like you do in the vid.
Also, his sister who was formerly close with him is refusing him now, hissing if I put her near him. ??
Do you have any suggest

This video is very helpful. I'm from Indonesia and my cat Pangpang is paralyzed few days ago, and I'm so confuse about how to take care of my cat. What do you think I must prepare for this condition? Where can i get something like Pookie wheelchair?
katatienna 1 year ago

Bless you!
racif 1 year ago
@racif Hi there. We were very touched to hear that you were inspired to adopt a paralyzed cat. This is really beautiful. You must be a very caring person. The frozen raw meat we buy is called Bandit and Carnibest. We buy it in pet shops in the Netherlands. It's ground up organ meat and bone and rice. Pookie poops once a day and it's odorless and hard, so easy to pick up. Won't you please keep us posted? Would love to hear how your kitty does. Arlette (p.s. check out the other 2 youtubes)
ArletteNL 1 year ago
@racif
the closer it is to you, the better. you want the raw meat to be as fresh as possible. check with the butchers in your area for scrap meat they don't sell, you can also check out mypetcarnivore (dot) com. that is there i get my dog's meat from. always make sure to mix water in with the meat, the urinary crystals is from a lack of water in the diet and cats rarely drink enough on their own. good luck! :)

You guys are well educated pet owners. Those cats are lucky to have you two as their owners! I am switching my cats over to a raw diet (just bought the grinder) after feeding them wellness core for more than a year. I am reading too many stories about cats developing urinary crystals and it's time I switch their diet. As a college student, I didn't switch them because I blamed the cost of wet food, but I can easily skip some fast food meals to make up for the cost.
danipgirl 1 year ago

ArletteNL 1 year ago

Swadika :) Thank you for your reply. Tomorrow, I have an appointment with a doctor who performs acupuncture. I’ll let you know if it helps or not.
rysdin 1 year ago
@rysdin I'm wishing all the luck in the world. Also let me know if this doctor is a vet. If it works, we will fly to Bangkok with Pookie! (We love Thailand.)
ArletteNL 1 year ago
@ArletteNL Unfortunately, my “Remy” didn’t make it. The doctor said in her case the acupuncture can’t help. The doctor found out that Remy had problem with her heart, which caused blood clog all over her body. Paralyzed legs were just the first sign. She passed away in this evening while I was visiting her. I’m missing her so much. The doctor said if the paralyzed legs caused by an accident or dog bite, it would have much more chance to heal.
rysdin 1 year ago
@ArletteNL BTW, the doctor who performs acupuncture is a vet. I’ll ask the doctor about your Pookie’s condition and let you know her opinion. Anyway there’s a paralyzed cat that she performed acupuncture on and now that cat can actually walk. However you must understand that there’s no 100% guarantee. I’ll keep in touch. It will be great if you could send me Pookie's medical records or more information about his injury. My email is rysdin@yahoo.com.
rysdin 1 year ago
Won't you please keep in touch and let me know if the acupuncture and/or hydrotherapy help restore any feeling, or improve your cat's condition in any way. I hope that your cat is healthy and doing well. Sorry to hear about his accident... Sawadika

Your videos really give me hope on my newly paralyzed cat. ^_^ Thank you very much. BTW, I did my research. In my town, there is acupuncture for cat, which I'm really interested and also hydrotherapy. BTW, I live in Bangkok, Thailand.
:) Pookie and Puma are so cute.
rysdin 1 year ago
Inspiring video, Pookie seems very happy. I have a cat named Puma too. He had a spinal injury almost 2 yrs ago but I was lucky, he regained full use of his back legs within a week and I only had to have his tail removed a year later. He's totally normal and has a buddy named Bittle to hang with now.
takman17 1 year ago
@takman17 Your Puma is incredibly lucky and I am so happy to hear such good news. I'm sure he does fine without a tail and doesn't miss it at all.
If you want to see Puma playing, check out the other two youtubes we made about Puma and Pookie. Thanks for writing!
ArletteNL 1 year ago
Thank you so much for making this video! Our kitty Athena was hit by a car and has pins in her pelvis and an amputated tail. I have mastered the urine expression part of her paralysis thanks to your instructions. Could you please spell the name of that special food Pookie and Puma eat? Little olive pits would be better than the no warning mess we are dealing with now.
217kmarie 1 year ago
@217kmarie Glad to hear that the tips helped. Something as small as a hairclip makes it possible for one person to do it alone. Our cat food can probably only be bought in Holland. It's fresh raw meat. One is called Carnibest and the other, Bandit. They come in small frozen containers. Maybe I exaggerated when I compared his poops to olive pit size but they are definitely hard and odorless. And yes, they are always without warning, but usually only come when fancy guests arrive for dinner.
ArletteNL 1 year ago
I love how he is still very playful and doesnt realy let not having the use of his back legs bother him. do have a question though, does his brother seem to take advantige of him not having the use of all four legs(i.e when they are playing, is he some times mean?) I know it is a very dumb question but I am just curious=)
you can so tell that your cats are Loved very much and they are Beutiful cats=)
jsrcamp 1 year ago
@jsrcamp This is not a dumb question. His brother Puma does not bully him. They are equally strong. But when Puma bites him in the lower limbs, Pookie does not feel it, so we gently push Puma away. Puma is not mean, he is a super gentle kitty.

This is the best video available to help me with my newly paralyzed cat. Thank you. I have noticed my cat itches and formally used her hind legs to scratch her neck area. What is a good solution or what does someone use for a cat to be able to satisfy an itch?
ccavegirl 1 year ago
@ccavegirl We know that when our cat turns his head a certain way, he means to scratch with his back paws, like he used to be able to do. We then either scratch him with our hands, or we pull our the hairbrush and he comes running to us. We have not yet figured out any other way. It is frustrating to think of this happening when we are not at home. Please let us know if you ever figure out a better system. And good luck with taking care of your newly paralyzed cat.
ArletteNL 1 year ago
His has not really wanted to eat, yesterday we hand fed him one sardine, and I will be doing the same in about 15 minutes as it has now been another 24 hrs since he ate. I tried this morning he didnt want to eat.
So no he is not eating much, but you can see he needs to poo as well it is just that his muscles and nerves are not working at the moment to do this. We are not sure whether this will return as yet or not.
TheSarahjanebeal 1 year ago
@TheSarahjanebeal This is very worrisome. I would find another vet immediately. He needs to poo. I'm not sure that the muscles and nerves would prevent this since our cat is paralyzed so has no nerve or muscle feeling from the waist down, and still poos. I would not wait until Wednesday to do this. A vet can put a finger in the anus or can give your cat an enema. Good luck. I hope this works. A bad appetite is a bad sign. Please keep me posted.
ArletteNL 1 year ago
aggg I tried this last night and wasnt successful at all :o( he just growled and got angry at me.
TheSarahjanebeal 1 year ago
@TheSarahjanebeal I am sorry to hear this. There are several things you could do. I hope the vet showed you how to express his bladder. In the beginning, it's easier with 2 people. We talk to pookie, caress him, wait until he is purring, then pick him up and place him on a towel before putting his tail in the hairclip and pushing down on his bladder, by the sink. If you have a second person petting him at the same time, he might not get scared and growl. Will cont. on part 2.
ArletteNL 1 year ago

ArletteNL 1 year ago

Because of this story my cat is alive.
He's alive now because of you. Thank you.
Bibbly53 1 year ago
@Bibbly53 Your story brought tears to my eyes. I am very sorry that your cat was hit by a car, how horrible. I hope that he is not in pain or suffering. I am so happy to know that we could help keep him alive, thank you for letting us know. I'm sure that with your tender loving care, he will have a great quality of life and be a happy cat. If his spine wasn't broken, you are very lucky. if you wish to see Pookie playing with his brother Puma, look for those 2 Youtubes. Keep us posted.
ArletteNL 1 year ago
@ArletteNL Week ago as of this posting, my cat was put down.
On the morning of September 9th, while getting him ready for his morning appointment I noticed what at the time looked like skin that he had possibly licked raw, upon further inspection I found it was some kind of residue.
Originally, this appointment was for blood testing to make sure he would be ready for surgery.
Instead, after showing the vet this questionable patch the result was horrifying.
Bibbly53 1 year ago
@Bibbly53 First the vet gasped, which isn't good, she then began to say "Oh dear." over and over again.
Applying pressure to the area she told my mother and I to look away.
We were told he developed an abscess in his fracture and that what I saw that morning was discharge.
We were informed that this meant the tissue which had appeared to be bruising was actually dead. Not numb, physically, anatomically dead. And that his body was trying to destroy the damaged area of his body.
Bibbly53 1 year ago
@Bibbly53 Initially when we were told 'His tail is dead and will need to be removed' I thought, "O.K. his tail is numb, he can't feel it and it won't get proper circulation."
Bibbly53 1 year ago
@Bibbly53 This wasn't the case. The tail became necrotic.
Coming to terms with this has been difficult for my family. He was only a year and a half old, fostered from a kitten. We loved him very much. In spite of these events, your story gave us hope when there seemed to be none. In addition, I can only wish that this story continues to be an inspirational one.
Thank you.
Bibbly53 1 year ago

Will keep you posted.
mankyholds 1 year ago

He now has one knucled paw one straight leg its only gone that way week
blacksrocks 1 year ago
@blacksrocks Your poor cat and you...what a trauma. But these are good signs. Pain response is the opposite of paralysis. I hope for full nerve regeneration. The healing time of the nerves will depend on the severity of the damage. It sounds as if he has improved a lot in 5 short weeks. I hope he is not too lonely in his cage but rest is so important. Pookie and Puma send their best to your kitty. Won't you please keep me posted. The best of luck, Arlette
ArletteNL 1 year ago
@blacksrocks Thanks sweetie. Yeah we hoping for alot more improvemnet he has some tail twitching going on now so thats even more btter. Your vid is great it shows that cats can still live happy lives. I would love to remain looking after blacky but the vet says if he doesnt improve and cant walk in 6mths that he has no quality of life.
blacksrocks 1 year ago
Arlette - our boy is now 48 hours post surgery. He is moving both of his legs and even stood for a few seconds while turning over to lay on his other side! He is more alert and responsive, wanting pets and purring. We are very hopeful for an excellent long term recovery with his legs. The incontinence is more uncertain, wether or not he will regain any function there (his tail had to be amputated). Needless to say, we are beyond thrilled with the progress and cant wait to get our baby home!

Warmly, Arlette
ArletteNL 2 years ago
My kitty never had an issue in the 13+ yrs related to his paralysis. The vet that intially treated him with said he would need to be euthanised if he failed to respond but by time I realized this was it for him...he was happy & adjusted. Vet swore I would have to euthanise due to urinary problems (infections, blockage) in less than 6 months.I said I would give him best I could for whatever time he had. I think length of life for these guys is multifaceted.
If care is key, Pookie will live long

Working as a vet tech, I only see a handful of owners with this kind of dedication. It's so great to see someone this dedicated to their pet. Love the raw feeding too! :)

Thank you for your wonderful words. Coming from a vet tech who must see so much, they mean a lot. The only reason we made this movie was in the hope of saving some lives. We figured that once people saw how do-able it all was, they would not automatically jump to the wrong (shudder) decision.
