  • Thanks for showing this move! I drilled it this morning and I think it'll take a lot of people off guard. The one suggestion I would have is when you're initially in side control to really isolate your opponent's other arm (the one he doesn't shoot the underhook with) by using your knee/thigh to push it up close to/past his head. Trapping the arm like that will really stop him from turning into you and coming up to his knees when you start rotating around. Keep up the great work!

  • lol for some reason this video looks old... its quite recent tho

  • @jiujitsu1980 I was thinking the same. I suppose, when you initially trap the underhook, instead of grabbing hold of your or the opponents gi, you could reach for your own tricep, transition then let go on the extension to stop him turning. By that time i'm guessing the opponent will have lost any strength they could utilise to escape the lock.

Have to try this in training to find out. :)

  • @jiujitsu1980 yeah, why wouldn't it?

  • Every time he say's "looking up to the sky" so calmly and the other guys starts to tap is hand desperately i began to laugh lol.... Thanks for the lesson!

  • Can the person on the bottom not follow you while you attempt to turn around his head? Or Even grab the belt and prevent you from turning?

  • @Momentimum yes, but not easily as u keep your weight on them and block their head with your arm

  • @jabzxzxz I can still hold their waste or leg and let him pivot my body when he tries to move around.

  • " Just looking up at the sky"

  • @carlsongracieteam thank you. I'm gonna try it on my son in the morning. My hours got changed at my job so I just roll with my 19 year old when we find time. Thanks again!

  • twist like an americana

  • idk if you actually can i'll have to try this out and test my own flexibility but are you able to remount him to keep him from moving while holding his arm?

  • Nice.

  • Think it would work without a gi?

  • @bigwhitedevil73 oh yeah, this would work without the gi it just requires getting that wizard (over hook) right away, and if the gi is on might as well grap the lapel (collar), if it's nogi then just sink the wizard, block the hip and run past north/south, sink your hips down look towards the ceiling and get the tap, one of my favorites learned it from carlson jr himself.

  • only for gi?

  • great move thanks

  • Good work keith and the crew, im going to have to put this into practise and start training :)

  • What would you do if he turns with you?

  • @Neroniful the best way to do it is when u go to spin put ur hand on his chest then shoot ur leg over the body for max pain lol

  • @Neroniful i would grab his belt or with my left hand while moving around his head to keep him from turning with you, never tried it, but it might work

  • coulld he not just try a armbar on his left arm once he places it on the ground to escape?

  • What great Shoulder lock Keith! Such as simple spin to a devastating lock!

  • i like looking at the sky

  • He's beaten marcelo garcia several times RESPECT.

  • can you pull this without a gi?? Im looking for submissions that mma guys wont see coming and this one looks perfect!

  • @75ehwtcv u dnt need the gi at all they would have to be extremely sweety to keep u from grabbin there arm in the first place

  • thank you

  • keith owen is awesome!!!

  • Thnk you very much you always share simple and effective techniques and most of the time they work even for new bjj practitioners like myself, your videos are of great help and as soon as I can I'll try to purchase some of your dvd's, I bet there are some great moves to learn on them.

  • ouch.that gotta hurt. gonna try it this week. :D

  • beyond sweet

    thanks

  • Seems like your opponent would just turn with you before you get the hand to the mat. Don't see whats stopping him from turning as try to walk around unless they just don't see the shoulder lock coming.

  • @ChoWZa in competition you would do it much faster and plant the arm to prevent them from moving before they would react. Also applying body weight pressure etc would limit their mobility and ability to turn faster than you, which is the real key. Of course if they could defend by turning with it and freeing the arm etc, but jiu jitsu is always about attack-defense-attack-defense; every technique has several points in the chain where your opponent can escape/defend if they are savvy to it.

  • greatjob! you make it look so easy.

  • Fantastic and so easy well instructed cheers

  • and whenever this is useful (in a real fight) you snap his fucking arm off kids.

  • Wow, this is awesome!! This seems like a sweet little move to shut down the shuck from cross sides, and a great position from which to start setting up a lot of different submissions. Also, it seems like a nice position because it would be easy to bail out back into cross sides if you start to get in trouble.

  • great! a true knowledge of soul of this sport...sorry for my bad english... greetings from croatia!

  • Excellant !!! Keep up the good work !!!

  • i love submissions

  • To answers peoples questions. Your laying on the ground not standing up. You're thinking about it from a standing up point. A punch is kind of ineffective due to no space to cock your arm, plus what are you going to pivot off of? Pulling your arm out of it or whatever isn't easy either, cause the ground isn't giving you space.

He's doing the move slow. I've had a person who did wrestling in HS spin on me, it was quick. Someone doing that lock is going to be schooled, it'll be quick.

  • Fantastic Mr Owen

  • Well, the dude on the floor still has his right arm to punch you with?

  • @ImTheLyricMan this is jui jitsu . you can't hit.

  • The rhinoceros in a gi at the start had me cracking up :D

  • what stops him from pulling his arm out as you come around his body?It seems like he can wiggle it out

  • i dont think anyone if they met this guy on the street with his voice would ever expect him to be a black belt. He sounds like he would be an accountant, lol. Just shows you can never judge someone based on the exterior presentation.

  • I've been watching you guys for awhile now, your the best in my eye's, alotta people where i'm from love your vid's, we do our best, and wish we could get a real gym with you guys around, were Canadian. ou simply make this too easy, as you stated in one of your other vid's...We lve pussy Ju Jit Su other than too Guerilla Ju Jit Su...every win we get we honour your name, along with tenth planet.....From The Dirty Dozen fight Club

  • but what stops your opponent from turning with you?

  • @waldomarek my thoughts exactly! Seems like that would be my natural reaction to someone locking up my arm and spinning to north-south.

  • @waldomarek

I think 1:55 is supposed to address that.

  • @LordNifty wouldn't it be weird to try to stop your opponent only when you've been turning 180 degrees yourself? what's your opponent doing in the mean time?

  • @waldomarek

Remember that the idea is relative movement. That is the reason you check the other person's movement. Not so much to keep the other person from moving, but to keep position. He wasn't really sucking in his position, but if he did, and his opponent tried to turn with him, the opponent would be forced to move him as well.

  • @waldomarek(continued)

Therefore, Keith could still maintain the same relative motion, without expending any more energy, while his opponent is wasting energy. This is an important BJJ concept, and this is about as well as I can explain it.

  • Thanks again, Ari and Keith. Keith you are a wonderful teacher, so comprehensive. Your students are very lucky.

  • very cool

  • THIS IS SOO COOL

  • Very nice!I can't wait to try this one!!!!

  • you sir are always amazing all of you

  • I like this move. Is this move applicable with nogi??

  • what if there is no gi to grab? What would you suggest?

  • @TJhandford524 his face?

  • @TJhandford524 works alot the same when have no gi still works that is just if have gi it helps

  • Nice technique, would this work with no gi? Doesn't look like it would work as well without a gi.

  • I am going to practice this submission on white belts...heh..heh

  • I love this submission because it is sneaky. Funny...the sneaky snuff always comes from the old guys of jiu jitsu. No disrespect to old guys. Much respect to Keith Owens. Please provide more sneaky stuff

  • That is a beautiful lock.

  • Creative!

  • How much damage could you actually do if you carried it out in a life-threatening fight?

  • @iMThrill probably a shoulder dislocation and a torn ulnar collateral ligament

  • I don't know how often that would work, but I do like the fact that if you do it right (weight down) and lose it, you are still either where you started or in a north south. Low percentage but also low risk. I like trying out moves that people don't know, but leave you in a good position regardless of success.

  • @lukeytron I saw Frank Mir do this in the UFC, all he did to keep him down was throw the leg over, This move is also done from north/south, You should try it before you knock it. I'm not try'n to be rude, but the one thing I always read on sites is "that won't work." It does work because I've done it. Maybe it's not your style, and that's O.K. I just think in Jiu Jitsu ppl should be a little more open minded and you never know you might just learn something! Train hard, Roll smart:}

  • @cast1one Sorry, I think you misunderstood me totally. I mean it is low success compared to the similar stuff. I was complimenting the fact that this mixes up a match a lot, keeps them on their toes kind of thing. I was saying that it is good cause even if you lose it, you are fine. If you lose an arm bar the person will often end up in your side control, which is a pain.

  • @lukeytron *simpler stuff

  • I dont think that submission would ever work, the guy on bottom can easily turn to his left and alleviate the pressure of the shoulder lock. The guy on bottom would also not lay there and allow that to happen, there would be a lot of scrambling involved.

  • so simple but so cool!!!

  • Oh my god thats beast.

  • amazingly simple. moves like a 6. AND you can EASILY include that in a transition. ho many times does someone on the bottom grab you like that? loads. thanks for that subs101

  • good vid

  • cool move bro.

without the gi, would you do a gable grip in the beginning while turning? or is this possible without gripping.

  • i bought the DVD series (direct download from the site) and my brother an I have been watching them when we wake up, before we sleep, before work, after work, before BJJ class, after class... pretty much whenever we have time cuz the videos are super helpful. i train at a BJJ gym and cant wait to try out all the techniques Keith Owen demonstrates cuz hes makes it easy to understand and fun to watch! if Keith owen or Ari every make more DVD's I'd buy those too!!

  • Cool Submission! Do you know if it still as good without grabbing the gi in the beginning?

  • bah if only i'd seen this earilier. just got back from training and know of two situations immediately i coulda used this. ill know for next time. good stuff mr keith

  • nice

  • wonderfull as always mr owen. respect from team goddard.

  • @RDbushi I am sitting here with Keith right now and he says " thanks RD!!"

  • @RDbushi Wrecking Ball!

  • cool submission
