These guys are right. You just didn't know how to start the car. It's a little confusing the first time you do it (push and hold the brake while you push "Power"), but not too terribly different from most other cars which make you hold the brake as you turn the key. I'm surprised whoever sold you the car didn't teach you properly.
Most trim levels come with a "Smart Key" system that let you unlock/open the doors and start the car with the key in your pocket or purse: it operates by proximity!

Good thing you didn't get an Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadilac, Corvette, Infinity, Jaguar, Lexus, Maybach, Mazda, Mercedes, Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki, Volkswagon or Volvo, then you might look REALLY stupid trying to start the thing. BTW, all have Push Button start, i.e. ON

You have to hold the brake AND push the on button... Which I believe almost all cars make you push the brake when shifting out of park.
Anything else just turns on the radio and the screen...

Brake + on button starts the car. On button by itself turns on the accessories.
