I'm pretty sure it would have been more difficult for Archer because attacks usually only work once or twice on Berserker. Gilgamesh could easily kill him because Enkidu weakens and binds every divine being(sucks for Hercules to be a demigod :-/).
Archer doesn't have the prana to keep UBW and throw swords until Berserker dies. Tracing Excalibur or Berserker's own weapon is more effective, but he needed time to do that. IIRC, he didn't use UBW in the VN, yet he killed him SIX times.
@v2099 for the anime much like with the Tsukihime anime rather than VN they took important, yet more "good vs evil" simpler and more, accepted I guess you could say, parts of each and forged it together, you get to see a little bit of a slight heaven's feel style from sakura being the vessel of the holy grail. mostly the fate route being that saber is the main focus, and a little bit of UBW, with the relationship between archer and rin, shiro and rin, as well as shiro and archer. O.o

Well, as can be safely assumed, Archer has lived for a very long time as a Counter Guardian and therefore being continually resurrected in order to fight, whereas Shiro is only about 16. As a result, he has probably fought Ajax at some point and copied the Phantasm from him, somewhere between his becoming a Couner Guardian and the Fifth Grail War.

@Raron So compared to ALL that, taking a whack from Saber is a bit light. I agree that, had Archer been given a distraction, he probably could have overcome Berserker using either one of the Arsenal of Noble Phantasm he already has, or Berserker's own against him, which perhaps would not have made his demise as EPIC, although perhaps if he killed Berserker only to get killed by Berserker in his Death Throes/Will-over-Death would have been better, sort of like what almost happened to Gilgamesh.
He was caught off-guard in Fate and Saber's slash was merciless. Archer servants do not have such a high regeneration ability and their defense actually sucks, so his wound was serious,he would have died without Rin's Command.
And remember, Shirou stopped Saber in UBW with his Command Spell,they didn't have so many problems against Bers with Archer's B.P.-shot

Actually Archer could beat Berserker easily with unlimited blade works. Everyone who have played the UBW ending or saw the UBW movie know that he can do the same thing that Gilgamesh does but even better(throw an unlimited number of swords towards the enemy). They just made him lose so that the plot could continue. Archer/Emiya is the strongest servant :)

If you remember the game, in UBW near the end, when Shiro fights archer, he says something like "If i were fighting any other servant, i would lose, but since i can project my weapons faster than he can get his, i can win". So even if he trains and becomes much stronger, if he doesn't use UBW he can lose against, for example, Lancer (Gae Bolg' effectiveness depends on the opponent's luck, and Archer's is the worst). His other stats are crappy, too.

Of course, Shirou might be a counterexample. <_< Considering the UBW path though, well... go play that one for yourself. Spoilers are bad (even though it's kinda obvious even from the Fate route, imo).
you guys know whats weird? They said that Archer actually killed 5 of Beserker's lives. But when they fight Saber,Rin, and Shirou again, after Rin kills 1 life again, That should be 6 lives gone. But they say that he still has 7 lives left. I guess they didn't do that math too well

Just to up the awesome, in the original visual novel, Archer killed Berseker SIX times. Yes, not FIVE, but SIX. Don't know what the studio was thinking; even a discrepancy of ONE makes a huge difference.
1) Archer kills Berserker 6 times before dying himself. (Now Berseker has 5 EXTRA resurrections left, as God Hand gives him ELEVEN resurrections, meaning he now has 6 lives total remaining.)
2) Rin kills Berserker once with her jewel-spell. (Now down to 5 lives)
3) Shirou projects Caliburn, and he and Saber strike with it together at Berserker with enough destructive power to kill him SEVEN times over by Berserker's own admission. (down to -2 lives)

1.Fate was not his story. He had to die, just like Saber had to die in HF.
2.(story-explanation) He was still wounded by Saber and did not have the magical energy to fight any longer against Berserker.
Archer could've killed Berserker easily, if he had had s.o. who could distract Berserker for a sec, so he could project Berserker's weapon.
