Itube661 just to set you straight the Iraq war wasn't to give us fuel, it was to raise prices on gas by ending the oil for food program. The soldiers that lost their live in Iraq is the product of corporate greed, nothing more. So you can't say because of that war is why we can drive. It's the reason why I pay 4 times more now then before bush took office.
The Elantra does not get 40MPG highway. Check out that data on the website 'fuelly'. Consumer watchdog has sent a letter to president Obama and to the EPA stating that you car does worse that what the EPA tests reveal, and Chevy Cruze consistently does better than what it's EPA values are. Both the Elantra and Cruze are 33MPG combined).
The Cruze gets an average of 28% better mileage than the Elantra.
Stop lying please. My mother got an Elantra, always in Eco mode, can't get more than 25MPG
@Strangephenomena1 Yea I know Hyundai & Ford SUCKED back then. But U should have waited 6 yrs..lol.15 yrs has changed,so Toyota & Honda better watch out cause the competition is catching up BITCHES=) I think Honda is still doing ok.But Toyota is doing awful..lol!!!
When the "consumer watch dog" of the consumer organization measured the fuel consumption of Hyundai Elantra in response to consumers' complaint, it was before and after an average of 25 MPG.
The organization announced officially, saying, "The real fuel consumption of Elantra has large deviation with catalog fuel consumption."
In quest of fuel consumption re-measurement of Hyundai Elantra, it appealed to EPA, and came out.
I've got a 2009 Elantra Touring. 2.5 years and not a single problem. More storage than some small SUVs, 26-36 mpg, 0-60 in around 8 seconds. The entire car is just well built, comfortable and lots of room. My only niggles: stereo could be louder, and it sucks in the snow with stock tires.
@13andincradiblycutt I say do it. I know I did. I'm so grateful that Hyundai released this just in time to make it my first car, and I'm 23 no lesss. I was very close to buying a Civic--and I definitely considered it because some of my extended family are Honda fanboys. But honestly, this such a good deal that even Honda's label can't overshine the bang-for-buck the Elantra offers. I can't be more pleased. It's such a joy to look at (inside and out) and especially to drive.
Hyundai and Kia have made a really huge progress. They literally innovated all models especially this Elantra from year 2011. I have 3 friends having this 2011 Elantra, they all have recommended this car to buy.

@slobhinav Spoilt prat, go learn something about life and come back here and moan. Not everything is about speed. It's a MASSIVE jump from that silly ass Maxima. Your dad has a point, and your dad is full of logic, why pay so much for an over priced car? I mean a Porsche? REALLY? Horrible things......
It looks fugly and it is probably not near as reliable.
The Maxima is a great car, and the new one kicks this things ass all the way back to the Korean town some of its parts came from. The engine in the Nissan? Tops the Ward's list of engines in the 90's. It has NEVER had a problem. The car itself, we just changed the struts, and that is the only problem we have had so far.
I bought the 2012 Accent. I like small cars, and the new accent is pretty big.. Smaller than the Elantra, obviously, One of the greatest things about the new accents, it doesnt look like ass
I bought the 2012 Accent. I like small cars, and the new accent is pretty big.. Smaller than the Elantra, obviously, One of the greatest things about the new accents, it doesnt look like ass
I have jeep Hyundai Terracan, 3.5, 2005. I did'nt have serious problem since 2006 (time of purchase). It costs its money (and suspension needs improvements). The spares service life are behind Japanese and German analogs. Moderate consumption 16L/ 100 km (speed 50-80 km/hour) within city . In general, Hyundai models are good!
All the hybrids on the market use NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries, which contain no heavy metals (so they're not hazardous waste, like the Pb-A batteries), and are easily recycled. Often they'll have labels on the packs themselves listing who to contact to recycle them, and often there's a nice cash bounty reward as well (Toyota's $200). The energy could come from a wind farm or solar energy, the sun is the real clean energy of the future.
"Cars that make sense" from the 80's commercials. I was in HS when these hit the market and were as disposable as the YUGO's. I don't know how these 5th generation's are going to last in the long run but with the economy in the crapper I'm seeing a lot of folks buying them. It is a good looking car though, but I also saw a Fusion Titanium that was really sharp! kinda looks like an audi from the back.
@BerettaM9USAF The Fusion is one of, if not the best, cars for the money. For about the same price as an Elantra you can buy a comparable or better equipped Fusion.
The Elantra is a good car for those who don't want to pay $2000-$4000 extra for a Fusion and are daring enough to speculate on the iffy Hyundai reputation. The Ford Fusion is much better in every possible way not to mention any Fusion will outlast any Elantra.
@bsp1148 Perhaps I was giving Hyundai a little too much credit. I don't know of many Hyundai vehicles lasting longer than 150,000 miles. The only manufacturers I know of that have a worse reputation than Hyundai is Suzuki and Chrysler.
@madhatter0110 Hyundai is not perfect but they hold up relatively very well. Mine has more than 144k now and I am looking forward to 300k. The only drawback to driving a car that long is that your life is too short to hold on to the same old car for God's sake. Hyundai builds cars by millions every year and they are not fooling skeptics like you.
@bsp1148 Call me a skeptic if you want but statistically Hyundai/Kia may build "millions every year" yet with respect to longevity Hyundai/Kia just isn't up to par with most manufacturers. The likelihood of any Hyundai hitting 300K without an engine and/or transmission replacement and other extensive work is slim to none.
@bsp1148 I concur-I have an 01, with only 85k, and by god you cannot tell that the engine has gone that far. And that's despite my thrashing it here and there. I do maintenance on it-anyone who doesn't DESERVES to have their car crap out on them-but I do say this now that it is one tough as hell car. But I've bottomed out the suspension numerous times, slammed the gearbox, and hammered the engine. And you know what? Still going like nothing happened.
@madhatter0110 I'm sure the jury is still out on Hyundai longevity, but they have come a long way since they started selling cars in the US, especially in the last 10 years. It's kinda like that commercial that aired during the Super Bowl after the Hyundai Genesis got the 2009 North American Car of the Year award. And now Hyundai barely keeping up with demand for the Elantra, as dealers sell them soon after receiving them, other automaker realize that Hyundai is a serious competitor.
my new 2011 elantra has gotten 18-20 mpg city since i drove it off the lot. dealer says 12000 miles till it will get peak performance. that doesn't make any sense. surely im not the only one. on the hwy i got 29 mpg. im an older person that drives very basic and slow.
very disappointed with hyundai..this is my second elantra. they ran a huge ad campaign about elantra economy car 29-35 mpg city 40-45 hwy. salesman guaranteed it would get at least 29 mpg city.
Im from Brazil and probably this car will cost here something around 43.000 dollars next year...Iam tired of this, here in Brazil cars is so expensive..
We pay for a Honda Accord (the basic one) 62.000 dollars.
Honda city (the basic one) 35.000 dollars (this car is manufactured here in Brazil).
I stick to a very strong philosophy of sticking just to German cars ! I got to to say, I cant knock Hyundai or Kia they are coming out with top notch designs and decent interiors. Does anyone know how there resale value would compare though and can this warranty be passed to the following user ? Just interested !
In Saudi Arabia, we don't have these features at all, we're being punk'd, seriously, lots of my people buy/rent Hyundai for horrible & dangerous drifting.
I drove the newly redesigned toyota corolla. I was looking for a paper grocery bag to put over my head while i drove that boring car. plain boring car.
@freebird20002012 Who are the most desirable cars in USA today? American cars? Lincoln? Buick? Nope, the most desirable cars are made by EU(BMW,Audi),japanese(Honda,Nissan,Toyota) and korean(Hyundai),read articles,go to forums, research, not only to speak without sense and from stubborn, that is MAJOR american problem, you think that you know everything BUT is quite opposite, ;o) p.s.Half of all your car manufacturers today are bankrupt, only so I will say about your "superior" economy, buddy!
I have a 2002 Elantra GL (base model) that I bought new in November of '02. I've always lived very close to work, so I only have 90,000Kms on it. Aside from routine maintenance, one recall on a rear suspension component, replacing ball joints on the front end, and replacing the flex pipe after a hole corroded through it, I haven't had any major repairs done.
Its been a very good car for me for nearly ten years - if the 5th generation is another improvement, I'm tempted to get one...
Yes, Hyundai is not aiming to be a top level car manufacturer. They aim to build high quality cars for reasonable prices. Hyundai is a volume car maker like GM and Ford, not like European makers.
lol...another eurocentric freak! if european cars are soooo great, then why are they changing their designs to get more fluid lines. i mean bmw and mercedes had very boxy designs for a long time...even jaguar changed its british design to look more japanese with the XF that replaced the s-type an x-type.
its not nazi germany, but the new generation where asians rule...
and reliability? european cars (esp AUDI and volkswagen) is pathetic!
It's a nice car, but every review should include a segment on the residuals - what will this car be worth 3 years down the road versus the Civic. That's the question you need to focus on, and speaking of the Focus, what a flop that thing is proving to be.
A week ago I was totally surprised! I couldn't find seats on a flight so I had to cover a distance of 1,200 miles by road; didn't want to use my car so I went to rent something cheap and i took the Hyundai Accent (smaller than Elentra). Mind u i live in Saudi Arabia so roads r so tough and the heat is unbelievable. And guess what.......that Accent was great, i never expected that....I would by a Hyundai any day
Just had mazda 3 as a rental. Terrible car. It's like the bumps on the road and the suspension are attached...tooth jarring ride and rear windows are about 10" tall..form over function. Drove a friends new Elantra...i'm not sure if these cars are in the same price range. But you'd have to be drunk or crazy to buy a mazda 3 over the Elantra..and I don't even like Hyndai. Elantra's suspension alone is reason to buy this car over mazda 3. 7 days in a mazda 3 and I wanted to blow the car up.
@814gt The Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra are built for different reasons. The Mazda 3 is supposed to be sporty and road-gripping so you're going to feel every bump. The Elantra is built to be a commuter car where fun driving doesn't matter but fuel economy is top priority.
@2Kriss2Kross Perhaps. However, I have a 2011 subaru wrx and bmw m3, both are 'road-gripping' but are don't cause your teeth to chatter. The Cx-7 drives terribly also.
very cheap, that is good, but i can't see myself driving it.

Then he jsut had to visit a Korean friend with an elantra. Since my dad is Indian. He thought, why spend so much for a car, when you can get this.
I am not being humorous at all. Just wanted to see what he is deciding to get.
And I am not liking it.
He gave up 550 HP, 9 speed dual clutch auto, etc., etc. for this pile of %$#%
It's a great compact car, but ty for ruining my day.
slobhinav 5 months ago
@slobhinav Spoilt prat, go learn something about life and come back here and moan. Not everything is about speed. It's a MASSIVE jump from that silly ass Maxima. Your dad has a point, and your dad is full of logic, why pay so much for an over priced car? I mean a Porsche? REALLY? Horrible things......
skipskops 5 months ago
@skipskops
Silly ass Maxima?
It is not much of a jump frankly.
It looks fugly and it is probably not near as reliable.
The Maxima is a great car, and the new one kicks this things ass all the way back to the Korean town some of its parts came from. The engine in the Nissan? Tops the Ward's list of engines in the 90's. It has NEVER had a problem. The car itself, we just changed the struts, and that is the only problem we have had so far.
slobhinav 5 months ago
@slobhinav
And btw. I talked him to his sense, he ain't getting a Hyundai anymore.
The reason why I don't like Hyundai's is because they have no name. When they have done great things I will pay attention.
The innovations in a lowly Porsche Boxter are enough to make South Korea (and Hyundai) put to shame.

BerettaM9USAF 5 months ago
@BerettaM9USAF The Fusion is one of, if not the best, cars for the money. For about the same price as an Elantra you can buy a comparable or better equipped Fusion.

The Elantra is a good car for those who don't want to pay $2000-$4000 extra for a Fusion and are daring enough to speculate on the iffy Hyundai reputation. The Ford Fusion is much better in every possible way not to mention any Fusion will outlast any Elantra.
madhatter0110 5 months ago
@madhatter0110 Obviously you are not much about car insight. Hyundai iffy? LOL.
bsp1148 5 months ago
@bsp1148 Perhaps I was giving Hyundai a little too much credit. I don't know of many Hyundai vehicles lasting longer than 150,000 miles. The only manufacturers I know of that have a worse reputation than Hyundai is Suzuki and Chrysler.
madhatter0110 5 months ago
@madhatter0110 Hyundai is not perfect but they hold up relatively very well. Mine has more than 144k now and I am looking forward to 300k. The only drawback to driving a car that long is that your life is too short to hold on to the same old car for God's sake. Hyundai builds cars by millions every year and they are not fooling skeptics like you.
bsp1148 5 months ago
@bsp1148 Call me a skeptic if you want but statistically Hyundai/Kia may build "millions every year" yet with respect to longevity Hyundai/Kia just isn't up to par with most manufacturers. The likelihood of any Hyundai hitting 300K without an engine and/or transmission replacement and other extensive work is slim to none.
madhatter0110 5 months ago
@madhatter0110 if you see my car, you may believe it as well that it may reach 300K without much trouble. No joke.
bsp1148 5 months ago
@bsp1148 I concur-I have an 01, with only 85k, and by god you cannot tell that the engine has gone that far. And that's despite my thrashing it here and there. I do maintenance on it-anyone who doesn't DESERVES to have their car crap out on them-but I do say this now that it is one tough as hell car. But I've bottomed out the suspension numerous times, slammed the gearbox, and hammered the engine. And you know what? Still going like nothing happened.

bsp1148 5 months ago
@madhatter0110 I'm sure the jury is still out on Hyundai longevity, but they have come a long way since they started selling cars in the US, especially in the last 10 years. It's kinda like that commercial that aired during the Super Bowl after the Hyundai Genesis got the 2009 North American Car of the Year award. And now Hyundai barely keeping up with demand for the Elantra, as dealers sell them soon after receiving them, other automaker realize that Hyundai is a serious competitor.
henryd1981 5 months ago
my new 2011 elantra has gotten 18-20 mpg city since i drove it off the lot. dealer says 12000 miles till it will get peak performance. that doesn't make any sense. surely im not the only one. on the hwy i got 29 mpg. im an older person that drives very basic and slow.
very disappointed with hyundai..this is my second elantra. they ran a huge ad campaign about elantra economy car 29-35 mpg city 40-45 hwy. salesman guaranteed it would get at least 29 mpg city.

VW Jetta 42.000 dollars..
This is not just because the high tax in Brazil..

Cheap brand somehow these guys have moved few steps...but nowhere near to European brands which have top notch quality and drive
victimoftemptation 6 months ago

ANY HEADROOM ?
CAN PEOPLE TALLER THAN 180 cm CAN DRIVE IT ?
It doesn't look that really has the headroom, this guy is not
too tall and already hits the roof, same as we've seen with
Kia Sportage (everything was there EXEPT the headroom),
which makes it female only car, so again,
HYUNDAI and KIA: MEN ARE TALL, AND NEED HEADROOM OK ?

814gt 7 months ago
@814gt The Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra are built for different reasons. The Mazda 3 is supposed to be sporty and road-gripping so you're going to feel every bump. The Elantra is built to be a commuter car where fun driving doesn't matter but fuel economy is top priority.
2Kriss2Kross 7 months ago
@2Kriss2Kross Perhaps. However, I have a 2011 subaru wrx and bmw m3, both are 'road-gripping' but are don't cause your teeth to chatter. The Cx-7 drives terribly also.
