Yes, I agree. Nowadays, mostly people speak in Mandarin. In my country, teacher teach Mandarin in Chinese Primary school. (teacher won't teach Mandarin in NOT Chinese primary school) For me, Cantonese is my mother tongue.
Actually every Malaysian Chinese know how to speak Cantonese. For those English speaking family, some of them know Mandarin, but some of them don't know Mandarin. (Because they don't learn Mandarin in Primary school, they studied in NOT Chinese Primary school)
i am also a malaysian chinese .i can speak hokkien,cantonese and mandarin.i understand teochew n a little of hakka but i do not know how to read or write in them.i am good in english and malay n currently working on learning how to speak japanese.but shouldnt a taiwanese understand hokkien as well?
