  • I have been thoroughly enjoying learning this piece of beautiful music through your well explained tutorials. Never before have I ever had a more explicative teacher in all my life. You cover everything from the basics to the most extreme. I'm extremely impressed at how you've chosen to break down each segment measure by measure. I never thought I could ever learn how to play such a complex piece of music at the novice level. Would you be willing to post a tutorial on Bella's Lullaby? Thank you.

  • I've played piano for a few years off and on, can read notes and all and I STILL can't master this piece. Actually, I gave up....but finding your video gave me hope. thank you...maybe I can try again now.

  • Asians are freakin talented at everything

  • Such a beautiful piece. This dude REALLY makes you 'feel' the music.

  • SENOR CHANG?????

  • That's beautiful, but I don't think I could ever play that :(

  • well i kindda now how to play notes but i only took lessones for like 2 years and then i had to stop because we moved and my parentes are really bissey and they cant take me anymore and im 14 but iu started taking clases when i was about 11 or 10 but i still try to learn using the computer

  • Thank-you.

  • how long did it take you to master this?

  • @101mercenary I didn't know it was possible to master this piece.. there's always something you can add to it everytime you play to give it more feeling and emotion in the outlet.

    Very nice playing here mind.

  • Clearly you are gifted. I have been playing for 5 years and am trying to play this. I'm halfway through. The thing that disappoints me the most is that just because I'm 13 people don't think I can do it.

  • @Tmarshall3279 there are people younger than you that can play it so your age cant be a problem unless you make it one. if you are dedicated then you'll eventually get it, good luck!!

  • WOW THIS IS SUCH A NICE PIECE!!! I LOVE IT!! HOPE SOMEDAY ILL BE ABLE TO PLAY!!! and you play really nice by the way!

  • Would you be able to make a tutorial for Jelly Roll Morton's 'The crave'?

  • This guy is insane if he thinks he's gonna teach a non pianist to play this. Take lessons for two years, and it will still be a pain to learn. Worth the effort though.

  • @Grasshoppa065 its only muscle memory. complicated, but im sure a lot of people could do with some dedication.

  • Hugh that was totally staggering, I have always admired this piece by Debussy, and you played it with all the grace that this gorgeous piece deserves. I myself am a self taught musician, and play by ear, though on occasions I do use my fingers as well lol...

I have bookmarked this page for later to learn this piece. I did do some music reading years ago with the Play It Today Mags that used to come with a Cassette. I recently purchased Pianoteq which is how I came across you. I'm glad I did.

  • can anyone who is suceeding in learning this/ already has learned it using these tutorials please tell me how long it took them? Did you do half and hour every day for 5 months etc?

  • My goal in life is to master this song

  • This is a very hard piece, right? I have played about 7 years - 5 with teacher. And I have just finished Nocturne Op9 No2 and Air on the G String. So am I good for this?

  • never played piano before, going to dive into this, i play the classical guitar though

  • With the help of this tutorial and my own determination, I have finished this piece after 5 months of hard work. I am evidence that anyone can learn this song if they have the patience and the time. Mind you I did play piano for three years, then I quit for 7 years and came back to learn this. Thanks to this song I don't think I'll ever quit playing the piano again.

  • this is one of my favorite pieces, and you played it perfectly :)

  • 4:53 - 5:04 He's a Karate teacher on Wednesdays.

  • Holy shitake your amazing!

  • I love how his eyebrows play along too.... ^_^

  • hi first of all can i just say i have watched a lot of pianists play this piece and you are by far the best, also i have studied piano now for 4 years but have play for 15 and as a result i don't read. when a teacher asked what pieces i would most like to play i said clair de lune and Grieg's concerto in A min she Laughed at me :( but now thanks to you i am on measure 40 and will be performing it as an end of year solo to an audience of my peers.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH :).

  • I just want to say thank you for your hard work and dedication to help others! And its a Great cause for music!

  • You're voice is so calming, but most importantly, you're playing is fabulous. Thank you so much for helping me see how much of a wonderful work of art this piece really is. I appreciate your thought and effort for helping the people of the world recognize and learn this piece of music. I myself am working on this song, I enjoy every struggling minute of it. :) You are amazing once again.

    With upmost respect :)

    ~Jonathan

  • I just found our videos and they are great! I am new to the piano and am learning to read music. Is there a website I can get the sheet music from in order to make the notes that you make?

  • damn!!! I can't read notes!!! ....... it sucks so bad I wanna cry!!! this is such a beautiful piece!!! i'm 24 years old.... I've been playing piano since I'm 13... and now I'm stuck cuz I can't read!!! and I've never been go to a music school :((

  • @MuhamadDaniels Try watching the next set of lessons - I use "Clair de lune" to teach everyone the basics of learning to read music, so no previous experience necessary. In fact, these lessons were designed specifically for folks who have NEVER played the piano before or had any music reading lessons! Try them out and let me know if they help you :)

  • @MuhamadDaniels Don't despair man. Your are probably far better than you give yourself credit for. Most people who have learnt to play without reading notes have usually developed other skills that often get left neglected far to long by those who have learnt to read from day one. Play, explore and enjoy it. Second to that, learning to read music is far easier than most no readers think. Take it one step at a time. There's so much free info on youtube and the web. Shouldn't take you long!

  • @MuhamadDaniels I can vouch for Hugh's lessons. I started learnig the piano 19 months ago and I'm 41 now, don't let age get in your way. That said, I can't really read music very well either - I remember the song after playing it many times, took me about 3-4 months of chipping away in small chunks and eventually you will get it!

  • Cute how you move your hands

  • like like like :D

  • You play well and this little piece is really nice, but to call "clair de lune" a "masterpiece" is a bit of a stretch....just my opinion of course, but in the vast repetoire of classical piano, this would hardly qualify as a "masterpiece"......you are very easy to please. It's nice and well constructed, but it's not THAT good. No way does it deserve that title.

  • @Rachmanfan4life I beg to differ

  • amazing lessons mr sung .thank u alot.it is the best video i have seen for online instruction for piano

  • What an absolutely beautiful song. I'll let you know in 17 years when i finally learn how to play it. "Fur Elise", HERE I COME!

  • one of the reasons i wanted to learn the piano was just so i could learn this piece in the yars to come. it's unbelievable and you play it in such a way that is truly beautiful. you're very graceful. well done and thank you for uploading these tutorials

  • hey, hughsung, i really like the way how you teach and show how to play the piano. I have a question, about Debussy's Clair De Lune. i can some how play it, but i really dont understand 9/8. Thank you for the wonderful tutorials. And im playing Clair de Lune for my college audition, which im a little nervous. Thanks once more

  • My mom's favorite song, I'm learning to play to her for Christmas.

  • @SwimWinterSW I'm learning to play it for my dad for Christmas. I started today (Christmas Eve) and I won't give up. I'm 12. This very big. Wish me luck.

  • its soo beautiful i could cry!! i will learn this no matter what it takes! :')

  • sooo beautiful i could cry!!!! i will learn this no matter what it will take :D

  • ..your not even really playing for the last 7 seconds.

  • your "little overview" was absolutely amazing! well done - i'm going to try and learn this :D

  • i just finished self-learning moonlight sonata... this looks a little harder but the song is SO good! new project!

  • @mcctut Im in the excactly same possition!!

  • You are drop dead amazing. I AM going to learn how to read notes now. You have inspired me!!!

  • tht was amazing!! i think im bout to explode on how fantastic tht was!! im totallly gonna learn this i dont care if it takes me a yr (which it deff will lol)

  • You played, but hugh sung?

  • Fantastic. Wow, that was amazing.. how long have you been playing piano?

  • WOW

  • man im about to cry thank you very much for the lessons

  • I have heard at least a thousand versions and interpretations of this peace. And even though at seems you are not a famous artist, it is one of the best interpretations i have ever heard. Respect! Joerg, Berlin, Germany

  • @juliettpapa Meanwihle: i've read some lines about you.... you ARE a professional. And thats how you play.... wonderful

  • you are incredible my good sir, make me want to play till I drop

  • Waouh, it really is my favourite piece!

I tried to learn it once, but I stopped somewhere at :40 ^^" I'm self taught and don't know how to read a music sheet so I used synthesia, I hope I can learn the whole piece =by watching your videos!

  • applause!!!

  • Fuck that was beautiful.

  • Awesome. I love this piece a lot especially the intro.

  • Oh my goodness, you play this piece so beautifully :)

  • Wow, das ist echt super. Es klingt wie das Original. Vor allem sieht das Lied auch recht schwer aus, da mein Respekt.

    Weiter so :-)

  • Awe inspiring truely. You give it the emotion it deserves. I shall give it the dedication it deserves as I learn it from you.

  • Your playing is just as magical as the song itself!

  • thankss !!

  • Wonderfull! I love it!

  • Nice idea. A real help. Thank you. I'd like to play this at my son's baptism.

  • ya you play this song the best on youtube. tried learning it but got too confused after the first few measures. i have a deep hatred for sheet music.bad buzz. your class tho.

  • wow. i fell asleep. tht was so beautiful!

  • do u have sheet music fr it pls???

  • woow, thats reaally good, im learning this piece, and im up to the last page, (YaY) but im not quite sure what these italian/french terms mean like these : Tempo rubato, un poco mosso, calmato & en animant. Would you be able to just breifly explain what they mean? Thank You very much.

  • omg ur a pro.

  • THANK... YOU... SO... MUCH.... this is definitely the song im learning next

  • oh wow exactly what i was lookin for thnks:) <3

  • beautiful piece by a great musician. thanks for sharing.

  • this homos pretty good, bravo jackie chan!

  • love the song it's used in TWILIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Rashke12 BOOO!... the piece should be remembered for its beauty and brilliance, not some movie!!!ugh... stephenie would say the same thing. Twilight may be her baby, but she made the characters to love Debussy because it's one of *her* favorite composers. they are fictional characters and they are taking over the world!!!! (not that i have anything against the books, cuz they rock, but the movies....um, no comment). just sayin......

  • do u have an overhead video of the entire keyboard of u playing Clari de Lune so i may learn offline? i do not have access internet full time. Syntyhesia is my other way but i prefer to see your voicing better.

  • i wanna learn this......starting NOW...hehehehaha

    thanks...

  • thank you soo much! It is so very kind and generous of you to make these videos. thank you. Im really looking foreword to learning this piece:)

  • your really good, iv never had a piano lesson in my life so im self taught and id love to be able to play this but i dont think i can do it without any help :S damn lol because id love to be able to play like you, your amazing :)

  • @whamalice Try visiting pianofromscratch (dot) com and following the lessons in order. There's also a section where I selected lessons that cover some general basics of the piano, so you might find that a great way to get familiar before starting the full lessons in order. Have courage! I get emails every day from people around the world who have been able to learn to play the piano from these lessons. Hope this helps!

  • wow, man your amazing. you are a professional piano teacher i would guess? either way this is great. much like the commenter before me i am not a very good pianist, but i have a passion for piano music. its brilliant. additionally, I have always wanted to learn this song. I learn by memory and pattern, and you do a great job teaching me. your videos are so informative, i'm learning a ton a basics. I appreciate it, really. Thank you so much for your time. I am watching the fourth one next!

  • 2:31 - 2:25 .....it doesnt look like your playing...

  • can just about anybody learn to play this piece? i really want to start but worried because i am not able to make my right and left hand work together :/

  • @messerr123 Believe you me - he works through the piece so slow and in detail that it won't be too difficult. Playing the piece entire piece itself might take a bit of practice, but if you hang in there and stay focused, I'm sure you'll be able to :)

  • It's too bad you stopped the lessons early, Mr. Sung :/

Nevertheless, I've learned a lot, and with a combination of Synthesia and the sheet music, I'm well on my way to being done with the piece. I'm actually at 4:34 and the rest shouldn't be so hard to overcome ;)

    Thanks anyways :D

  • @ZeroCoolXCM It's been a busy year for me! Hopefully I'll be able to wrap up the rest of the lessons during the next brief slowdown in my schedule...keep your fingers crossed! Thanks for watching so far!

  • @hughsung

    Oh lol - I wasn't expecting a reply XD

Well, then give me a chance to really thank you from the bottom of my heart for starting these tutorials. To be honest, Clair de Lune is THE piece that opened my eyes to the world of classical piano :)

And I've actually finished it now - remember the feeling you experienced when you finally completed the piece? Nothing can beat it ;)

Thank you a thousand times, Mr. Sung!

  • I have a little problem. I'm not a very good pianist, so it takes me a lot of practice in order to learn a piece. Therefore by the time I'm able to play it, I know it by memory and ear and therefore my sight reading never gets any better. Is this a common problem?

  • @ZarMulix It depends on your goals. If your goal is to simply learn a piece of music, then committing what you learn to memory is actually a wonderful way to go. Sight reading is actually one of the most difficult skills for pianists to learn, simply because we have so much information we need to process very quickly. It *can* be learned, though, so don't give up hope!

  • @ZarMulix actually im in the same boat played since childhood do better by ear and memory but cant do S* for sight reading even self compose my own stuff yet not able to put it down on paper :(

  • i am the exact same way!

  • @ZarMulix

It is very common. But you can try to solve this problem by trying to sightread a new peice everyday. Over time, you should get better. :)

  • watching you play this with the understanding and passion moves me beyond words. I'm learning to play with Synthesia. Self taught. Thank you for the lovely video

  • No offense, but how is showing off your skillz teaching us anything?

  • @DaK1LL he was just giving us an overview and how the piece sounds like the lessons comes in another vid ..

  • Bobby Lee

  • By his hand gesture at the end, I would call this 'clair de Plume'...lol. :) Nicely done.

  • That was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !! how many years have you been playing piano?

  • That was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !! how many years have you been playing piano?

  • omg i love this song but it will take me a long time to learn because i am a beginner with no piano lessons and i dont know how to use both my hands to play different things the only song i taught myself was moonlight sonata movement 1 full

but i will luv to learn this song and u play very very very well

  • @PSP3000user Wow, that's great!! I must commend you :) I'm actually learning the moonlight sonata mvt 1 too atm :D but how were you able to play that if you have a difficulty with playing with both hands at the same time? :S

I know some great songs that might help you with that problem, I can send you a copy if you want? :)

  • Bravo!! (I'm going to learn this without reading bc i'm a guitarist w fast fingers. {He said hopefully})

  • lol for the eyebrows but B-E-A-Utifully played

  • Quite simply one of the best finds on youtube. A beautiful, ostentatious, and perfectly refined tutorial. Thank you, thank you.

  • hey hugh sung, you dropped by my blog earlier and lead me to this pg.

    this is amazing. thanks:)

  • Hi ! I downloaded a version of this song to play, but there are two treble clefs and a bass .. the version you seem to be reading seems to have just one treble claf (its still is a perfect version of the piece by the way!) but i was just hoping if you could direct me as to where i could download the best (simplest) version of the sheet music!

    thanks !

  • very well played, sir. Nice video/sound set up too.

  • this is a good deed. thank you.

  • Astonishing.

  • I'm currently learning the 8th measure, but I just had to come back and watch you play it again.

I just love how you have so much passion when you play. You make it seem flawless :)

  • I always told my girl friend I would play Claire de lune for her someday! Now I can when I'm finished this series!

  • @Srouble finished yet?

  • you are amazing., just rediculously good.

your eybrow movements are hilarious! but ignore me u are just inot the music.....and thats why u are so good! coz u love it

  • beautiful:)

  • Thanks Hugh, my grandmother taught me the first part of this, and wanted to know how to play the rest, now I know! Much appreciated!

  • how, pray tell, does the "air turn" work?

  • The AirTurn is a wireless page turning pedal system. In this video, I "turn" the digital pages of the music by pressing the AirTurn pedal with my left foot. The AirTurn has a USB receiver and works with Mac or PC (and even Linux) computers. This allows me to keep my hands on the piano and focus on playing and reading rather than the distraction of turning pages. Visit AirTurn -dot- com for more details.

  • you are such an inspiration !

  • magnifique un vrai bonheur à écouter merci !!

  • You are phenomenal, a real inspiration :)

  • amazing bro...simply amazing...I am starting your lessons today itself... btw i have only been playing the piano for a month so wish me luck.

  • sorry, I need the program you have in your lap top (computer) ... why not read the notes encesito what would you say the name or download it please ... thank you .... play the piano very well!

    :))

  • @TheOmarsalazar The program I use is MusicReader. You can find more details about MusicReader from AirTurn -dot- com, as well as the digital version of the sheet music. Hope this helps!

  • wow, im a beginner totally!!! But I love this song. ps. i think we have the same laptop and bamboo!!

  • @bellajacklil Awesome! The Wacom Bamboo is a great tool for drawing with a digital pen into your computer. Be sure to check out the MusicReader program to take full advantage of the Bamboo's drawing capabilities - you can add color ink and highlights to your digital sheet music in MusicReader!

  • this will take a while.. hahah!! but i love it! thank u very much! you're my idol now! ;p

  • @xxrich04xx I'm glad you enjoy this! Take your time, and don't be intimidated with the number of lessons. The key will be to work in small segments until you're comfortable, so be patient with yourself and remember to have fun learning!

  • oh! you also reply to your fans! you're a very kind persong! thanks! i will learn this piece somehow.. thank you! for the patience and dedication you put in every video you do.. :D

  • You're welcome - best wishes as you study, and remember to have fun learning!

  • Mr. Hugh Sung, i have a question... i am using a keyboard and it sounds off because the sounds can't be sustained or elongated because it doesn't have a pedal :P.... i'm just wondering, do u know a device i could buy in replacement for the pedal so that the sounds can be elongated or sustained?? thanks!

  • Umm, i think this might take me a while :L

  • lol ikr

  • @cheekymonkey575 It may, but just try to be patient with yourself and have fun in the process. Learning music is very similar to learning a new language - it may seem tough in the beginning, but with practice, it will get easier.

  • I haven't even watched this video yet (waiting for it to load!) and I'm already pretty sure that this is going to be awesome! I'm excited! :P

  • Such beautiful music. If I really am going to learn this from scratch then I must be dreaming --- it will be too good to be true.

    I just hope it's free.

  • @BlackxPanther The YouTube videos are free as long as YouTube exists - I plan to offer a paid DVD version for folks who are more comfortable with that format (and to support my time and energy in creating these videos! ;)

I hope you'll enjoy the lessons and keep me posted on your progress!

  • i quit piano and now im doin it by ear & utube

    :p

  • @mycupcake123 YouTube can be helpful, but there's nothing like having a "live" teacher to help you make progress faster :) Hope you can find someone to work with if you're serious about learning to play the piano!

  • THANK YOU!!! THIS IS AWSOME!!

  • @bre366 You're welcome!

  • fully has an iphone!

  • awsome tutorial and you look like jackie chan :D awsome !

  • ohhhhhhhhhh yeah!!!!!!!!!

  • @dan424 LOL!

  • lol

  • thats sooooooooo amazing,i play piano and i want to learn this im on grade three but is it too hard ?

  • @KingscourtGirlz Give these lessons a try - i've designed them specifically for folks who have never played the piano or read music before. Let me know if you need help!

  • Can you play River flows in you?

  • @Caelalj54 I just created the overview video for "River flows in you" - you can find it in my YouTube channel!

  • Thank you very much.

  • hi i am 14 years of age and i finished this piece about a year ago, i have playing it in various school concerts and now i am starting my music gcse's and i am using this piece for my first recording, however i skipped a section out of this song in the time slot of this video from 2:51 - 3.19 so what video number can i use to learn through th at 28 seconds or so ?
