Take a listen to Mina's version of this tune--or Ringo Starr's. Personally, I like Jim Reeves' version the best. This song was written by Country singer Ted Daffan, who also wrote Born to Lose, which became a gigantic hit for Ray Charles.
I do not feel there is much difference in Joe's and Fats' version of this wonderful classic. When I listen to Joe's other songs he doesn't particularly sound like Fats on those. Some songs, such as this one, almost sell themselves - they are so good. I feel that Fats' voice on this song is richer than Joe's (altho I do like Joe's music) and perhaps because I've heard Fats sing this in person I get a different take on it. I have favorites of some artists who do a same song on my list. - Paula
Good song! Do you have a copy of "California Bound" by Joe Barry? I would so love to see that one appear here. I've been searching for it for a very long time!
Fats and Dave was driving around New Orleans one day and heard this song come on the radio, Fats looks at Dave and ask, i dont remember recording this , do you?
Fats DOES do a version of this song, but I still appreciate this one more, considering it is HIS single, not Fats Domino, or whoever did this song afterwards and got more credit for it. Gotta give credit where credit is due. Rest in Peace Joe...
I was only a kid when I first heard this crusing around in my pals cars because I was too young to drive, and car radios was the way I heard most of these great old American Rock tunes. This kind of music and Levi's are only a few of the reasons the rest of the world is so jealous of the USA! I feel fortunate to have lived in the best time of humanity, and certainly music. I fear we've past the top of the curve, and man is immutably destined for the Earth's recycle bin of evolution. Gere
i MISPELLED jOE'S NAME IT'S BARRIOS BUT I STILL COULD BE WRONG ABOUT THE SPELLING I PLAYED WITH JOHNNY AND EDGAR WINTER IN BEAUMONT IN 1960 WHENTHIS WAS A BIG HIT ALONG WITH GIVIN GENE AND ROD BERNARD AND TK HULIN AND MANY MORE SWAMP POP SINGERS FROM THIS AREA.
jOE bARRY'S REAL NAME IS JOSEPH BARIOUS AND HE WAS FROM AROUND CROWLEY LA. AND THIS WAS PROBABLY ROD BERNARD'S BAND OR TK HULIN'S BAND OR MOST LIKELY A GROUP OF MUSICIANS AROUND THE LAFAYETTE VILLE PLATT AREA AND IT WAS PROBABLY RECORDED AT FLOYD SOILEAU'S STUDIO. GIVIN GENE IS FROM PORT ARTHUR TEXAS AND HAD A RECORD AT THE TIME CLLED BREAKIN UP IS HARD TO DO. THEY SOUND SIMILAR BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH FRENCH CAJUNS.
This is the very first recording of this song, later done by Fats Domino. Anyway, don't you think this could be backed by Dave Bartholomew orchestra? I'm almost sure
Used to think this was "Fats" if you know what I mean? It certainly is in that style anyway. Good one...also a hit for Les Paul and Mary Ford back in the 50s
