  • Heard these gentlemen perform this a capella in Canaan Valley, West Virginia. It's how they ended the show - - exquisite.

  • BELA SINGS!

  • YES!!

  • On The Boulevard was the first NGR album I heard back in the early 80s.

    Great music!

  • who dislikes this song?

  • haha bela looks so awkward without his banjo... like he doesn't know what to do with his arms.

  • LOVE IT!

  • Cmon! Yeah singing and being real!

  • I get goose bumps and my foot taps by itself when I hear this song

  • Pat Flynn.....

  • hadn't heard these guys before. very good.

  • dang john can SING!!!!!!!!

  • These cats are just too cool , Aren't They !

  • I am so glad to find this one,I used to have this on a cassette!

  • first time we've seen bela without banjo in hand

  • Pat Flynn is a real sorcerer of the guitar :)

  • You need a permit to be this good

  • Oh man, I LOVE this... ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

  • John Cowan is brilliant!!!

  • LOL - Bela looks a bit uncomfortable without

    his 5-string. Great stuff!

  • And a well-deserved standing O.

  • Is there anything Sam Bush can't do?!

  • now that's what I'm talking about

  • And all God's children said "AMEN"!!!

  • They're giants in my book.

  • bela whithout his banjo, but the song is awesome!!!!

  • you know why these guys weren't giant stars?.....cause they're not wearing cowboy hats and playing "formula" country songs...these guys are all MONSTER players and probably the most talented foursome i've ever heard...never got the recognition they deserved though....meanwhile the general public is always waiting for a new guy in a cowboy hat to eat up......it's a shame

  • I agree, they couldn't categorize them easy enough- not country, not the 'usual' bluegrass. Even bluegrass stations will continue to play the old, twangy sounding stuff rather than the real talent that is currently out there. New Grass Revival (now all with separate careers), Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice, Mark O'Conner all mega talents but you never hear them on the radio I don't get it.

  • LOL, your comment is actually kinda funny. Old, twangy stuff over real talent? Let me tell you something, if it hadn't been for that "old twangy stuff" these guys would have never been playing this. They may have played jazz or soul, but New Grass would have been non-existent.

I agree these are probably some of the most talented people to ever play but show some respect to tradition.

  • You are right Brian. I once read that Mozart's and the Beatles' imagination outran the comprehension of their audiences. I think it was the same with these guys. Too much chops, creativity, and lack of convention for a lot of the country crowd.

  • TOTALLY Agree! The guys were SO under-rated. unfortunately, the band called it quits right before they were gonna make it big.

  • Can't understand why these guys were never GIANT stars. Heard them several years at Telluride.

  • Madeline Murray O'Hare would have converted had she heard this!

  • I wonder how many hits these guys played or sang on for other people. Its too bad they didn't have one themselves.

When their version of "Calling Baton Rouge" came out in 1989 I thought it would be a smash hit, but it barely broke the top forty.

  • When Garth Brooks recorded Baton Rouge John Cowan sang tenor on the recording.Brooks had to sing it 2 steps lower than new grass

  • SO good! Thanks for posting.

  • Bela Fleck SINGING???? I cant believe it but here it is.....he looks strange without his banjo...still wonderfull to see thanx for posting

  • I kinda suspect Bela's mic was muted, to give the appearance that he was singing without actually adding his voice to the recording.

  • you can still hear three parts when cowan isn't singing...magic?

  • Let me tell you something..these are the most talented players and John Cowan is a brilliant singer...magic or not..they are legendary talents

  • i completely agree. i was just being facetious in response to jopinofcabra's comment saying bela fleck's mic is muted... clearly it isn't if they are still in three part harmony when john cowan isn't singing. these guys have some of the best music i've ever heard.

  • no magic Bela

  • Check out the original. The Staple Singers!

  • Couldn't be done any better than this.

  • love to see bela singin'!

  • I've got this cd (On the Boulevard) & this is one of my favorites. Thank SO much for posting the classic line-up.

  • OOOOOO,,, I've been waiting for this clip forever!!! Thank u so much!

This is the first song I heard with NGR also,,, it's a killer,,, and John is just amaaazing

  • This was the very first song I ever heard New Grass Revival do. I was hooked from the first line!! Thanks so much for re-posting these

  • Seems like these have been missing from youtube for a while. Thanks for bringing 'em back.
