rolled off treble, bloated MR, bloated mid bass...the super tweeter addition in the later vids is very nice.. you've done nothing wrong...fostex cab designs are whack...
Nothing wrong in using that ply - it looks superb. But the Fostex drive units have a very narror sweet spot beaming the high frequencies . . . and for that reason I prefer Lowther or Tannoy more . . .
Whats the music man ;) and nicely done they sound awesome although I wish Fullranges could play fast music well . I hear full ranges have issues with distortion with fast paced rock/ metal although I find myself listening to reggae most of the time
i got criticized for using marine plywood for my speaker construction (im studying product design) 'use mdf' he said... any comments of the use of ply or mdf?
@sarriscostas marine grade plywood is a far better option for horn/back loaded speakers due to its sound qualities (it just sounds better than MDF). Do a google search for "frugal horns"
@gobacktorussia : I don't know what makes marine plywood "marine" but conventional wisdom is that MDF is denser than plywood and is more inert or non-resonant. This allows you to build a nice, solid and inert cabinet that is lighter and less costly than an equivalent one of plywood.
IMO I think its not a good idea to use 7ply plywood. Using 6mm plywood the sound reduction index is about 20 db, and I think you dont get a well damped cabinet.
Take a look at my web site and read the post named "Horn loudspeakers cabinets"
I always wondered what the audio reviewers were referring to by "listener fatigue"; now I know. Pretty horrible. Fostek is a perfect example of someone offering to do the impossible; eg. full range speaker; essentially you end up listening to the box resonances and some very unpleasant mid range, "brightness". The wonderful thing about the audio business is that there's always another customer out there who has no idea what's going on and is completely pleased with the results.
It is a plan which I intend to accomplish very soon, but I hesitate starting with the schema of Fostex FE126E with a loudspeaker Davis Acousitcs by hoping that she works.
I have got same one.

nice build - how much degradation in tone would you expect if the BLH had been made of 7-ply "birch" plywood?

So what speaker do you recommend?
I, too, don't care much for listening fatigue.
