  • I honestly thought she was black when I heard the song. Fuck, everything I know is wrong.

  • LOVE IT,SOUNDS LIKE A BLEND OF ANNIE LENNOX AND JANIS JOPLIN COMBINED.

  • @char1816 you totally need to blend some Nina Simone :)

  • Good Video. Terrible Sound.

  • reminds me a little bit of the old bow wow wow stuff. all the tom toms and rim clicks. but that's not important, and this stuff is better anyway.

  • the outpouring at the front of the song is just great. anything seems possible after that . . .

  • wow. she is amazing. this band is so awesome. just beautiful.

  • That yell at the beginning, just awesome

  • wut? before i saw this... i pictured the singer of this as a dude who was black... I couldn't be more wrong... aahahhaa

  • I like that the only difference between this and the studio recording seems to be that the vocals are quieter than the instruments

  • I've heard three versions of this one and the three are awesome!!

  • She recreates her sound live in such awesome ways, i think merril/tuneyards is great

  • I love getting turned on to new music! This is awsome!!! Thanx for posting it

  • Finally music that isn't pure horse ass!! I'm a new fan :)

  • I likeeeeeeeeee

  • Sacred feces! That was good. Great to hear adventurous new music. Thank God for Youtube because I don't think radio will be playing this, although it should.

  • @hamlanzon6 I heard this song on 89.3 the Current - Minnesota Public Radio! It got stuck in my head and that's how I ended up here. So, GOOD radio will play this ;)

  • i love how the loop action leeds you into the song. awesome talent.

  • god I love her art so much.... she's invented something great... I think this is the start of a new universe.

  • absolute rubbish

  • @LTACS : don't be so hard on yourself.

  • @killingspiders1 - SCREAMO!? XDXDXD Oh my gosh that was the silliest thing I've ever read.

  • Pure.....Talent

  • I dunno. I want to like this, but all I can hear is daffy art school bollocks.

  • @macandrewes : um, no, this is one girl band street music, busking...

  • She sounds like a Siren! shes pure awesome with a side of awesome sauce!

  • @killingspiders1........Might make you sound a little less misinformed if you listened to more of their stuff, knew what Merrill Garbus's work was actually about so you actually knew what the FUCK you were commenting about.

    Screamo scene???? Fashion??? Retard.

  • @killingspiders1 lol, r u fucking with everyone?

  • LOL 2:27 they are so beautiful

  • freakin fantastic !

  • mind = blown.

  • wowwwwwwwooooooooooowwwwwww D I V I N E

  • SO. MUCH. POWER!

  • Saw these guys live with MGMT sooo trippy and good

  • @skoopa so did i...it was cool.

  • Fucking SICK! Fuck yeah!

  • i think this is even better than the album version. because the latter is so overloaded that it can barely breathe. but this 7 minute version has an almost meditative quality, and the same time a groove that's really amazing

  • she sounds like a dude that sounds like a chick

  • @crazybeff hahaha yesss

  • @crazybeff Not really

  • I dig her music so freaking much! Ugh! it makes me wish i was that talented. she's amazing

  • Goosebumps! Gotta see Tune yards live before i die...

  • How you can NOT like this?

    Hey..everyone has different influences.

Gotta sound a little like your teachers I would think?

I think my echo sounds like me.

I am glad the echos around me..don't sound like me also.

  • @thunderb1rdusmc As a stab at profundity, that has to rank as one of the stupidest things I have ever read

  • @1ofdiamonds : you must not read much.

  • @pyrrho314 I read your dogshit comment & immediately regretted it. Apart from the fact that it gave me an opportunity to call something of yours dogshit, as dogshit as the glossy American Apparel commercial soundtrack slime you listen to

  • @1ofdiamonds : I bet you do a lot of things you "immediately regret". Like you know what I listen to you lame poser.

  • How you NOT like this?

    Hey..everyone has different influences.

Gotta sound a little like your teachers I would think?

  • @1ofdiamonds Huh. Seems like you posted this exact comment on another video of theirs. Well done. I wonder, are you spamming all of their you-tube videos? I'd also love to hear your original, creative musical material.

  • @diazyseis Yes I am. No you will not. Regards, 1O'D

  • @1ofdiamonds : um... actually, she was just a poor street performer that develped a one girl band method of using loops, which she won't prerecord and lays fresh at the start of the song.

    so... you fail.

  • @pyrrho314 Whatever

  • "Okay, what are we playing?"

    Gahh, love her.

  • I thought this entire time that the singer was a guy...

  • I would kill to have a record store like this near me.

  • *sigh* I so much want to marry that woman.

  • she is such a brilliant artist. her voice is amazing, and the way she plays with rhythm is so much fun.

  • holy shit

  • i just found this group about fifteen minutes ago. you know that awesome feeling when you find great new music? wow, thanks.

  • @bmbenblog wierd me too, 889 by chance?

  • no way that's a chick. I mean, obviously she is, but that is such a powerful, dude-sounding voice. but it's so great. she's just awesome.

  • @squelium69 disagree...she has a great "nina simone" quality in her voice.

  • @bmbenblog

definitely agree with your comment about her having a "Nina Simone" quality in her voice.

  • she is just so, so wonderful.

  • that band got themselves hooked up with a megatalent

  • @planetahead : the "band" formed around her (and she seems to play with different musicians afai can tell)... she was doing one girl band stuff as a street musician with a loop machine... is my understanding.

She booked her OWN tour, and got discovered by the independent labels.

  • wheres the bassist hiding?

  • its crazy how they all just start exactly on cue, without a count off or anything

  • @LedZeppeloyd223 LOL they do a really silent countoff but you can see her whispering it

  • Unanme a su banda.

  • i really like this perf of this song. i feel bad for the bassist tho, stuck outside of the frame.

  • love this song. every member of the band is doing such amazing things here, and it fits perfectly together.

  • Siete dei grandi, vi adoro

  • holy shit! i thought this was a guy singing when i first heard it!!!

    Wicked tune though.

  • @supervurt girls with lower voices sound like guys with higher voices and it gets me every time too haha

  • awesome!!!

  • she's so sweet...and then that music starts. tUnE-yArDs is phenomenal...

  • Keep illuminating this world with rhythm and light! Beautiful! I am sharing this to anyone who will listen, and I already bought 2 of your CD's and am lovin it up!

  • Haa, who else didnt even realise there was a bassist until he kicks in his beat at 3:01

  • Seeking bassist... error.

  • Ahh I love watching musicians who actually love doing what they're doing. I almost had tears of joy watching this

  • @ilovesteves, Take off your hornrims and your old sweater and join the real world for once. This is good, inventive music.

I mean, if you REALLY wanna be all hipster about it, she's borrowing the same notes as Beethoven. Soooo derivative. And what's up with making music out of sound waves out of air vibrations? I feel like EVERY band does that. God. No one's original anymore.

  • @GdThngUrPretty don't mind it... IT can only loves steves...

  • the bass is too loud ...great voice btw..

  • @Lcrash200x I don'T know a lot about them so I kinda wondered if the BAss was only recorded. Asside it was a bit over tuned it sounded great ^^ The Bass that is

  • @marzrei : she uses a loop machine, but she only records it during the performance (which explains the way her songs start (espc live)).

  • Thought a black dude was the singer of this and after hearing them on the radio

  • That voice is insane.

  • it's so dirty projectors... can't like it from how much is borrowed... and then for all the cross-rhythmic drumming, that's just an influence from bands like these new puritans and local natives.

So much modern indie has such a drum-fetish.

If you try and count how many modern indie gimmicks run right through her music, you can understand how much she encapsulates this time for music, it's completely contemporary.

  • they are so badass

  • she sounds like she swallowed a gospel choir

  • she has almost as much appeal as thom yorke.

  • Reminiscent of Juana Molina's rhythmically layered songs. Good stuff!

  • Merrill is such an incredibly talented singer, arranger, songwriter and overall musician, but wow those two percussionists were having the damnedest time locking into that groove.

  • @bassman31793 YESS!! That's what i was saying the whole time " How the hell did those two percussionist hold down ti and groove over that silent loop. jeez. So good, i wish i could work with her and learn how to arrange.

  • @BAlva8 Time*

  • is that a baritone or a tenor ukulele?

  • This is ouuuutstanding.

  • holy fuck! play england

  • I can't stop watching this video! I love the beginning.

  • Album of the summer. Easily.

  • i love this group reminds you of how free music and artists should be

  • their vocalist is a chick? what?

  • where da bass player at?

  • @larsplaysthefish off to the left, brah. No video time for him...

  • @larsplaysthefish off screen to the left, you can see the head stock every once in a while.

  • @larsplaysthefish at 3:13 u see him on the very left

  • FUDGE ME OVER!

  • I've been scouring YouTube and Spotify for this band ever since first hearing them on saturday. I can't stop listening to them, superb stuff!

  • Very impressive with all the on-site made samples.

  • If you're listening to the tUnE-yArDs, you're doing something right in life :D

  • awesome, a gem in the rough

  • awesome, a gem in the rough

  • There's a bassist hiding some where over there

  • @otty311 it must be a pretty girl for sure!

    :)

  • Why isn't there a "Love" button? This is amazing!

  • Completely amazing. I so wish the sound capture didn't crap out on the top end on this vid though.

  • Merrill is such an inspiration to me as a female composer. It's heartening to see a woman this completely intelligent, innovative, and just plain talented. To top it off, she achieved success without relying on being attractive. I want to be her when I grow up.

  • @AnaAerophina I think she's totally attractive. Kind of sad that you don't think she is....:-( I guess you mean in the socially accepted super model way? Because fuck that version of attractive.

  • @WalterDeat Oh, no! I didn't mean that I don't think she's attractive. I just mean that she's never felt she needed to become more CONVENTIONALLY attractive (which, I agree, fuck that version) in order to gain popularity. She relies on her skill as a composer and performer instead of selling her body, unlike a lot of popular female artists these days. She's a great role model.

  • @WalterDeat I agree

  • Whaaaat, I didn't know Dwight from the office played drums in tune-yards! Cool fact.

  • aw, invisible bass man! :(

  • i dunno...but that guitar guy looks like a fuckin creepo lol he did a great job an its rare that i like the live version as much as the record version but this shit is hot

  • I love how they just whip this out of nowhere in a measly little record store.

  • @mushuplus Who you calling measly???

  • @mushuplus Music isn't in the location, it's in the people who create it.

You can create beautiful music anywhere. It's all in you.

  • @BurritoDesu I very much agree.

  • PUUUURFECT!

  • muito bom! =o

  • Merill Garbus is the beez neez yall.

  • shame we can't see the bassist.
