The only thing I could suggest is to try to learn where they happen most frequently and avoid that area. I found a certain spot on my outer hip that is a frequent offender, which I try to avoid.
My very first infusion set did this and I was with my diabetes educator at the time and she panicked more than I did! My response "when you live with diabetes, blood isnt quite as scary anymore...can i have a paper towel? oh and do you have a bandaid?"
I had the same thing happen to me with my college roommate. It TOTALLY creeped him out because I was really calm about asking for a tissue. This one was so bad that blood was spurting out with every heartbeat.
Ha - I totally understand. My bathroom is white tile and it looked like I got shot. It really scared me the first time too. I will say that I am starting to get better about knowing which sites are more apt to be a gusher.
They never tell us about gushers! It scared the crap out of me the first time it happened!!!! I called my endo's office and the CDE and I had a good laugh about it as I told her the story of the blood all over me and the floor as I ran to get a paper towel.
Son just had a gusher last night. Soaked a giant red spot into his boxers. I told him that hat was a good one.
