He was designed to be some strong load lifter in the colonies, and hence wasn't equiped with much of a brain.
Btw, Leon isn't as much of a "moron" as he is emotionally immature. Lack of emotional experience and seemingly childish behaviour for adult age, is seen in most replicants. Notice how he later plays with Chew's eyes as if he was some bored child.
Funny. It seems Leon was such a typical replicant being emotionally very unstable and easily annoyed, Holden didn't need that machine or the VK test to see that he was a replicant.

Poor Leon is emotionally conflicted. He both Hates & Loves his Mother. It is suggested that the mother of the replicants is Earth (Mother Earth). The replicants are forbidden from earth. Leon hates his mother for this. Yet the replicants return to Earth (their mother) suggesting love for her. But their return to earth is through a violent attack on the off-world colonies. This brings the conflicting emotions together... an act of love carried out in Hate (rape). Not somethin you wanna talk about
On a different note, a Video Watchdog edition had dialogues (and I think stills - it seemed to exist as a watchable bit of film or video) from an extended scene of Deckard at the hospital visiting the guy in this clip - there was a parallel drawn between the breathing apparatus to the VK pnuenmatic / pump thing.
There should be empathy tests done on everyone for real, to determine whether they qualify as a real human or not. The book this is based on makes the animal empathy a lot more obvious; the ability or feature to feel compassion with other creatures.
@smalltalentforwar Some government employees can still smoke. Your Senators and House Representatives can. The stated reason is that it's to make their guests comfortable -- which is true. Since most of their guests are in fact powerful lobbyists, heads of corporations and wealthy campaign donors, and those "guests" are actually the Congresscritters' bosses, they can do as they like.
One set of rules for them, another for the rest of us.
Nope, laboratory made humans is 'Brave New World'. In the Blade Runner / Do Androids dream of electric sheep world, the Replicants were essentially cyborgs - kinda like the Terminators. That's what gave them their superior strength and speed (and for the Nexus 6s an on par intellect with humans).
@owaffs No these are not androids like in robots that are made to look human. These are genetically engineered humans grown in labs, specially designed for menial, dangerous tasks.
The story comes from a book called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Androids are robots with human appearance. If they were just engineered humans (like in Brave New World or Gattaca) then they wouldn't be androids (especially not in terms recognised back in the 1980s). The book was about how we define humanity in a world where robots could develop emotions (traditionally seen as a human trait) which wouldn't be an issue if Replicants were engineered humans.
That was the point of the VK test. It made the defining difference between humans and robots being that robots can't empathise. One of the lines Deckard says to Rachel, shortly before doing the VK test on her, is "Replicants are like any other machine; they're either a benefit or a hazard. If they're a benefit, it's not my problem".
Do you really think anyone would refer to a clone or a genetically-altered human as a machine if they didn't have artificial, mechanical parts?
@owaffs In the movie based on the novel. The replicants are not robots in the sense of mechanical machines but genetically engineered humans that are manufactured meaning born in a chamber in a lab. They are called machines in the same sense as the black slaves of 1700s being called "Chattel" They are both considered property and not sentient life. Mate - please don't let my use of bad-ass and the liking turtles thing make you think I'm anti-intellectual - I'm pretty sure a lot of people on youtube wouldn't be able to spell intellectual. What compliment would you like me to have made? Would you like to be modified?
Cowards, they love mocking people without pressing the reply button and giving a thumbs down when they know they have lost. Here, have a thumbs up heh heh.
Mate, I'll say what I want, and use whatever words I wish. I noticed someone thumbed down your comment so I thumbed it back up again. Did I say I wanted to be childish? Is being light-hearted being childish? We're watching a scene where a robot shoots a bloke. So what is it, the Battleship Potemkin? Have you ever read flamewars on youtube and thought you were above it? If people don't find what you write interesting or affirming to read they aren't going to stick around.
To a man like me, being light-hearted enough to say "badass" is childish. You can use whatever words you wish, whenever you wish, but that doesn't mean I can't argue with those words.
I never said I was above flamewars or arguing, I pretty much implied I hate language that is bred from insecurity, such as "badass".
That seems fair enough. I agree that you are right that language of bluster is indicative of a fault somewhere, and in the real world I myself would shy away from people who straight-facedly express themselves like that. We can explore those faults with further interrogation :) . I would only add that as someone hitting middle age as I am, letting your hair down and having fun are moments in time that you value a lot more after years where you haven't been doing so, and are a cause of regret.
PS - managed to catch the film for the umpteenth time on BBC iplayer on Christmas Eve - am still not entirely happy with the 'father' change. For my faults - I'm happy with 'focker' in Rutger Hauer's Dutch accent. We get the father/son symbology from the whole scene, and the aggression should stay.
