  • This is the most baller tutorial going mang. SO GOOD. made it really easy and broke it down instead of just jumping into the polygons. Aw yeah. Sogood.

I'm gonna model an ear right now and try this one out. Thanks and you have a nice voice too. I hate it when people type in text editor like some mute would. xD

  • Thanks for the tutorial. It's helped me more than my class instructor has!!

The only thing I would say is that it would be helpful if while you're modeling and extruding, give a really brief explanation to what part of the ear you're planning the new piece to be for. It's tricky to follow along just watching what you're doing and guessing what part of the ear the verts represent.

    Seriously though, great tutorial!!

  • Could you tell me what you think of my method. I posted it as a video response. Thanks

  • Wow Thank you so much this was really helpful!!! Thanks!

  • Wow, you're a clever sausage...

  • ok liked n subscrived

  • Help! The Fill Hole tool in my Maya won't let me fill the holes when working with the 2D version D: It fills the top holes, but not the bottom ones D: Any suggestions?

  • @megasean3000

Have you tried the Append to Polygon tool, under the Edit Mesh tab of the Polygons menus set?

  • @ambermash Nope, but I need a lesson on it ^^;

  • i support the comment of the user below. Im using another package for modeling, but i realize that creating good topology is essential for any program. I also would like to see a detailed tutorial for the eye/eyelid zone

  • You should be named the official King of Edge Flow!

I can't tell you how many hours I spend just reorganizing my topology.. not to mention brain power wasted, and added frustration!

    Thank you so much!

  • @514dandy Don't know if you are still having this problem but a quick fix is to convert to subdivs and convert back to polys but this increases poly count. Its good practice to get used to modelling in quads / fixing topology manually, sooner or later it becomes second nature and just by looking at something you can tell what edges need to be deleted and where you need to add edges.

  • Thanks for this . This has saved me hours of misery!

  • OK the key is to trace the image

  • Envy

  • thnks!

  • I don't know if you still have the original recording or if that recording is of better quality, but if you do, could you please upload a 420p or even 720p version of these tutorials?

They are excellent tutorials, but a bit hard to follow sometimes, due to the small size / blurriness in larger size.

If this would be impossible/impractical for you, no sweat, I'm already glad you've got them online as is :D

  • @Hyshinara on my website erraticimagery you can find a higher res version under the erratic extras section.

  • @squirc

    Oh, OK, thanks! :D

  • what programm did you use?

  • ears should be modelled once and then saved...why model it again and again?

  • Many thanks! Ear was the hardest part of the head for me, now the rest of the head seems harder :-) A fine technique. Thanks again!

  • thanks a lot for these wonderful tutorials.I want to take a modeling career in animation but my character modeling is very bad, these tutorials will definitely help me a lot.

  • fantastic tutorial thanks :)

  • You're incredible sir. Helped me learn a lot!

  • Hey Thanks for this vid, I used it for my assignment. It saved me a lot of headache!

  • one of the problems I have when I finish things with the ear is connecting it to the head afterwards. More often than not, the ear has way, way more geometry than the head around it, even relatively low poly like your model. Any little tricks to handle this without adding excess edges to the model?

  • thanks so much for this, it's very helpful

  • Thank you very much for these tutorials! They have been immensely helpful! I am very impressed with your work, keep on being awesome!

  • Excellent video! =)

  • Do you have a maya file (free model) mesh of this ear, for reference purposes? Thanks!

  • I have a question. Why art thou so boss?

  • Can the same thing be done in 3ds max?

  • @kentmdd can be done in any traditional modeling program

  • Ok noob modeler here, can you please tell me how you took that image and put it on that plane (or whatever it is)?

  • @DaFan86 I have a video on that. check it out!

  • @DaFan86 What the fuck, first of all if you don't know how to set up a simple damn image plane you're the only noob here, instead of being an arse you should look it up since it's one of the most simple things to do and be thankful for the free lesson, others pay heavy money for any training.

  • @mimikawaii7386 WTF? I think you misunderstood me, I said that I AM THE NOOB MODELER HERE and that I don't know how to do that. I'm not insulting Squirc, I'm just asking him a question. Next time read the comment carefully before accusing others of something they didn't do.

Besides, my comment was written 9 MONTHS AGO, I'm a lot better now and I know how to set an image plane,

  • @DaFan86 Ahhh but can you transbobulate a subdiv? I don't think Maya likes me...Every time I try to right click it calls me a complete tool :(

  • you are one skilled modeler!

  • Now how would I attach this to a model of a head?

  • @ihopeutubedies group the ear and head, line them up, weld vertices

  • Thanks for the tip, reducing made it so much easier!

  • So I watched both your tutorials on modeling the head and the ears...but I'm stumped on exactly how to go about merging the ears onto the head. At the end of your tutorials, the head has 10 vertices to attach to the ears, but the ears have 26? How am I to connect the two objects?? Any help would be appreciated?

  • @samuraishuyin Great question! you can add edges to the head or collapse 3 edges into one on the ear (search online about "reducing edges").

  • @squirc hey thanks for the tutorial model, but is there a way where i can duplicate another ear so i can out it on the right side??

  • @lakerdynasty22 There's lots of ways to do it. you can use mirror (under mesh menu). Ctrl+d will duplicate.

  • Thanks.

I watched this video ... to see an example of more complex modeling.

Sometimes I would like to see the finished product displayed in slow pivot.

So I can see edge flow and identify poles.

I have produced poles with undesirable visibility such as creases and I am trying to prevent.

  • You had me going great till you mentioned about the 5 sides polygon. I'm using Blender and that stopped me, cause Blender at the moment doesn't support ngons.

  • Great tutorial I always like seeing others modelers edge flow and see ways to improve my own.

  • the ears are so difficult :(

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW thank you very mouch great tutorial !!!^^

  • This ear looks so good that Mike Tyson would like to eat it!

  • (possibly stupid)Question, when modeling an entire human body, is it efficient to model it piece by piece then merge all parts together rather than making the entire model at once? Is that how it's usually done? Or are these being made like this for tutorial purposes only?

  • @Ultimaniacx4 Thats a great question! I like to model piece by piece because sometimes the rest of the body can just get in the way. But it's just my preference, if you like to do the whole body at once, that can work too.

  • @Ultimaniacx4 I modeled the basic body (with no ears and without some other stuff) and then I created the other stuff and then merge them together (im about to do the ears now haha)

but I agree with squirc its a personal preference

  • ya very good tutorial before seeing this i was finding very difficult to do ears but now its bit easy i think. And can u plz give me some tips to attach the ears to face coz ears edges will not matches the face edges when i tried to attach, triangles will come. so can u plz help me out in this/

  • great tutorial, and very nice voice!

  • if you're going to blink, hit pause first, this guy is lightening fast

  • Ugly ear

  • super boss thanku very much for ur tutorial

  • I love your tutorials, and even though i use 3ds max it is easy as heck to follow them! they are very thought out and just simply excellent!

  • nice

  • gr8 job ..... the modling part is amazing and the way u created is outstanding.. but do u have more simple way to make an ear coz what i found in modeling is , ear is the toughest to create

  • Well this Is My Second Time Modelling The Ear Following You Tutorial .. But I Still Dun't Know How To Merge It With The Head . :P Can U Make A Quick Tutorial For it Please :)

  • your tutorials are the best! Please make more!

  • thanks for your quick reply. I will send you my problam jpg in some days.

  • tutorial is good. but why don't you use shortcut "3" and some edges are missing.

  • @ravishankarart Thanks! This video doesn't use the smooth proxy "3" because I made it with the version of maya before that feature came out. Now that I'm using a newer version of maya, I use it all the time :) Also, can you tell me what edges are missing? what do you mean?

  • tutorial is nice but i some edges are missing.

  • pois é né !!!

  • it's maya?

  • Hiya, great tutorials! The smoothing didn't take care of the 2 n-gons and 1 tri for me though, I might've missed something along the way...

  • do you always create the ear to start with then move on to the head or only for this tutorial? and btw awesome job that ear looks amazing

  • @kizitosan I make the ear separate and then attach. doesn't matter which one you make first. Thanks for the nice comments!

  • this is what i've been looking for I'm new to maya and you have the best tutorial on here you give clear and simple instructions thank you i can't wait to try it out :D :D

btw can you please make a tutorial on car modeling?

  • Where do you find your references?

  • This was a great video. I'm coming back to it later, have put it in my favorit

  • could you post your references for at least some of these videos? These tutorials are great (to the point where my 3D animation teacher showed us your one on the face) but for things like an ear finding good aligned reference is a pain.

  • @EpicWizard Finding good reference of the ear, and of most other body parts is easy. You just have to be creative in how you search. And almost everyone has digital cameras, so why not shoot your own reference?

  • :( I've been using sketchup this whole time for organic models and it sucks

  • Very awesome, thank you for this. It makes it so much more simple!

  • great tutorial , really helpful for me and others to, pls add more 3d organic modeling tutorials

  • easiest way of ear modeling really thnk u very much...

  • Nice and simple ill try this... thanks!!

  • what is the site

  • Hey Great tutorial, but I have a major question. How exactly do I attach the ear to my head model? Do I just position it and combine polygons? Because then it doesn't flow well... Thanks!

  • you merge all the vertices from the back of the ear to the head of your model making sure that the numbers on the hole you create on your head are the same as the numbers you have on the back of the ear.

  • Select to your polygon menu set. Go to Edit/Mesh => Append to Polygon Tool. This will easily let you connect edges by adding a face just by clicking them.

  • thank-you.

  • Thanks a million !

  • Thanks for the supurb vids from an amature Blenderhead MD. FWIW, the human ear canal angles upwards and forewards, not down, after the initial entry depression.

  • NO It's Maya.

  • gud

  • Very Very nice!

  • Great tutorials! These added many new tools to my toolbox, I can't believe I've gotten this far without them!

Thank you, I think you helped me get over another hurdle.

  • How do you display the certain objects in wireframe but not other objects? How did you display the polygon in wireframe but not the photos?

  • I think you can use an image plane (viewport background options or something) instead of applying an image to a plane manually.

  • Yeah, setup an image plane for the reference pics. Its simple, just set up a Plane (in the polygons shelf, near/nect to the cube) Then give it the same dimensions as your pic, like pic = 300 by 350, plane = 3 by 3.5 (width/height) Then use HYPERSHADING to apply the pic to the plane. I wont say how to use hypershading cause of char count, google it, its really easy. BTW when setting up the planes, careful cause for a side veiw, Width=z axis, front/back veiw width = x axis and z doesnt affect it

  • please see my video on setting up reference. the answer you seek is there :)

  • ok but a little to fast in some places and hard to see all in wireframe

  • Thank you for posting this. Very helpful!

  • incredible

  • that was great

  • brilliant!

  • Very very helpful THANK YOU! :)

  • Thanks, bruh. I'm a Blender, but this is great!

  • Thanks a lot Ryan! I like all your videos. love the methods u use. Makes everything easier. thanks again.

  • I prefer to use a plane and extrude edges around the edge of the ear, personally

  • hehe thats what i had to do ;)

  • as good as you are man, you need to slow the hell down lol. youre clearly experienced but for us novices, its hell trying to follow you lol.

  • Hit pause :-)

  • nice job on such a quick ear, i never would have thought of any of that

  • thnx alot.. really a gr8 tutor

  • good

  • Thanks dude. That was a great help. Really appreciated your tutorials.

  • Its a good tutorial, what program are you using? 3DS max does all of that and more

  • He is using Maya

  • your ear tutorial is intereseting, but

it has a lot of flaws

it's looks fake, the anatomy of it isn't correct.

  • why not post a vid of your own?

  • @a1onarap are u a moron?

that ear is the most realistic i've ever seen

  • cool man

  • Yeh i always have problems creating that forking shape! =-(

    Ears are so mean.

  • I love your vids man. Really understandable. Can't wait to get started on modelling more seriously in the near future. Thanks

  • you're great!!!! thnx for the vid!

  • Really helpfull thanks alot.

  • wow..great modelling..thanks for sharing..

love your homepage, great work there!

    keep it up!

  • I saw a few ear tutorials but i couldn´t finish then...they were too complex. But this, 5* for this simple, efficient and awesome tutorial.

  • That was a clever construction

  • You're awesome man. This video makes me wonder why ears are designed so complex, lol. I know it's important functions, but compared to the other sensory organs (eyes, nose, etc.), at least their external make up, they are not as complex.

  • Another excellent video! May I suggest you try moving the verts using the normal axis instead of the world axis, should make your manipulation a lot more precise. Also you can press the cursor keys to navigate between verts.

    Still, brilliant tutorial!

  • really don't think he needs that advice amigo

  • another appreciative viewer!

    thank you...

  • The only thing I don't like is the smooth to take care of the 5side. It works for, but attaching it to a relatively low poly head can get a lil hektic...Very awesome though, I think i'll just terminate the line and proceed...thanks for help

  • wow.

  • you're awesome

  • Thanks for posting these tutorials, these are very well explained. Your a very skilled modeler and teacher.

  • keep posting ...thx

  • very impressive work. I will be watching your videos.

  • wow, I'm really learning, love ur videos.

  • Once again a superb tutorial. Thank you so much and please keep up the good work!

  • you're the best man.. can you make a tutorial for real beginers?please. thanx
