what makes this the best version is that anyone with any kind of voice can sing this song ..........SO HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS NIGHT.........
This is BY FAR the worst version of this or any Christmas song ever recorded. There is nothing subjective about pitch. Notes are either correct or they are not. And the "notes" in this song are not correct. At all.
Sorry...I like the Pretenders, but this is by far the worst rendition of this song in the history of ever. Judy Garland is really the only one who does it right. She puts emotion into her singing, too, and can actually sing well! I know a lot of people like this one, but her screeching rock voice just ruins this song. Oh well, to each his own. Merry Christmas, people!
Crissie is so moody and awesome! As well as the other past and present Pretenders. Also season shout out to James Scott and Pete Fardon. You guys rocked the Pretenders. RIP
In 2004 we were sitting in a camp in northern Kuwait on christmas eve and this was the only christmas song I could find on my laptop. It was the perfect one for the occasion.
This is the WORST version of this song ever. My ears bleed everytime I hear it. I don't understand why any radio station would play this song. There are so many other BETTER versions to play. Anyone who likes this song has to be completely tone deaf.
Do you hear the rawness of this song? The sullen understatement that's always ignored. Christmas is the best/worst time of the year for some people.
And she captures that (whether its intentional I don't know) with a stark beauty. She is off key but, its the feeling behind the song. Its not being sung to just be sung.
There's a story, a life, a feeling behind it. Moreso than any other pop-artist has even tried to achieve
@berettadreams Tone deaf/off key is not artsy, it is not raw. It's bad. Nobody always hits a home run! We're not required to like everything a favorite artist does all the time.
Her emotions? It sounds like she's tired and wants to be finished for the day. That's probably why they used this take!
The feeling? Oh yes, I do get that...it's a nauseous super naus!
For me and obviously others, it's really, really bad!
Look if you love it that's fine. I don't, it just bugs me. :)
I always imagined its Christmas Eve or possibly the 22nd or 23rd of December. These artists just want to get the heck home and basically sing this song as they were out the door of the studio! Awesome rendition!!!
Definitely my favourite version of all time. Full of melancholy, nostalgia and reflection. It reminds me of all the people I have loved & lost over the years.

My sister just passed away Dec. 17th ten days ago... This song makes me think of her, and yes, makes me cry too. Cause 'through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow'...well the fates will not allow me any more 'merry little christmas's'. And through the next years we won't be all 2gether.....
And that just really hits home hard. So please...I don't want your sympathy, and am sorry if I bring you down. Just please, please, love who you have around u. U may not have them 2morrow.
My brother was murdered 3 years ago. This song is for all those that need to be remembered. "Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It maeans to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart."
My sister just passed away Dec. 17th four days ago...
So sad. It's always harder at Christmas it seems, but somehow I hope that memories of her can help you through the Christmas season. My dad died years and years ago, and Silent Night was his favorite Christmas song. I always think of him when I hear it. Likely you'll think of her every day . God bless you.
It is hard to lose a loved one at this time, I wish you the best, and yes everyone, the time is now for cherishing those we love, you never know when their(or even just as possible/likely) time will be up...Don't squander that time...Merry Christmas to all...
Chrissie Admitted that when she recorded this song; she was not in a good mood; in fact she said she was very upset about something. Hence why the song isn't upbeat like it usually is.
nonetheless this is an amazing song; and she's an amazing woman
Hi, I agree with some of the comments below about the emotion put into the song. However, it seems to me that the singer is off-key in various spots throughout this song. Am I crazy? Believe me, I'm no musical genius, so maybe I'm hearing things.
Chryssie has done things differently from the start, but when she comes in with "Through the years....." it is a throwback to the classics. I agree that the majority of this recording is different than what we are used to hearing, but she has such a haunting voice. I love this version.
Various artists have fiddled with the lyrics, but no matter how they're tweaked, clearly this was not supposed to be "Jingle Bells." The Pretenders took the song where it was supposed to go, IMO. Tremendous emotional eloquence from Chrissie and company here.
I have to agree. This version has nagged at my subconscious for a while now, which is why I looked it up. It struck me as emotionally sincere, which is something rare these days, and is why it caught my ear. I don't even care if it's not technically perfect.

She butchers this song--it took me a long time to figure out who screwed this song up and I was shocked to know it was by Chrissy. I usually like her music but this one sounds like she is high on something! I really hate it when the play this at work-pisses me off cause it sounds like a cat who got his tail shut in a window! UGH!
Are you serious?? This song is so moving... Her voice is unique, and excellent. It's offbeat..that's it's charm...maybe listen when in a Christmasy mood!!! LOL!!
Whoever says Chrissy Hinde is a bad singer is obviuously ignorant to vocal skills and probably is still shushed at happy birthday sing alongs cause they will ruin even that!! LOL!!
She has heart, sentiment, and a beautiful voice!! Not every one sounds the same..their are nuances..you need to learn to appreciate... This song Rocks!!!
I agree with you about this song being sad and all (eventhough it's only a xmas song) When I first heard this song on the radio a few years ago, right around xmas time, I liked it and I still like it now. I thought the slow, slow instruments playing throughout the song along with the singer's voice was very relaxing but sad at the same time. If a song like this could put me at ease and in a relaxation mode then it has got to be good...google Diana Krall-"Why should I care" slow, sad..

I heard two of worst Christmas songs ever this year. Gloria Estefan's "This Christmas" was one and this song was the other. "This Christmas" is bad song by a bad out of tune singer and this is one a nice song by bad singer. But still they both suck.
I absolutely agree--they play this all the time where I work and I think-what the hell is this person on? I usually love the pretenders, but this one bites! Pure hell! Absolutely destroyed the song--what a shame!
The best version by far. Just hearing it puts you in the Christmas spirit.Snow falling, flames flickering,etc..Chrissy Hynde's vocals unmatchable and accompanied by such a lovely lamenting guitar. Just imagine cuddling up to the one you love with this playing in the background - Scmoochy!!!
this is my favorite christmas song by far. i met a girl in denver one time during christmas and she had the record. when i was in town the next summer i went and visited her and we played it again and again. didn't matter that it was june...it sounded great!

Chryssie has done things differently from the start, but when she comes in with "Through the years....." it is a throwback to the classics. I agree that the majority of this recording is different than what we are used to hearing, but she has such a haunting voice. I love this version.

The Pretenders did this song the right way. Merry Christmas from snowy Chicago, IL

Isn´t this song meant to be sad? I watched the video to this song, and it was so sad it made me cry..

This song is great, it always calms me down too. I agree with redlineshooter. The electric guitar has a very soothing sound.

What are you people on?
I'm sorry but the first time I heard this song, I thought, "They butchered Judy Garlands classic".
HollywoodGirl1245 3 years ago
I absolutely agree--they play this all the time where I work and I think-what the hell is this person on? I usually love the pretenders, but this one bites! Pure hell! Absolutely destroyed the song--what a shame!

The best version by far. Just hearing it puts you in the Christmas spirit.Snow falling, flames flickering,etc..Chrissy Hynde's vocals unmatchable and accompanied by such a lovely lamenting guitar. Just imagine cuddling up to the one you love with this playing in the background - Scmoochy!!!
