Personally, I didn't like Mai because when I first saw her, I thought she was a man until she spoke words. (I didn't like that they gave her such a masculine looking face, it didn't seem fair.) That, and she seemed like some stereotyped goth character, which annoyed me. But she grew on me when she stood up to Azula to help Zuko escape the boiling rock.

I still wish they hadn't drawn her face to look so masculine, though.
