Someone said something important here about the spectacular Alfredo Kraus. Elegance. True singing isn't yelling, it's an art and thats why this singer could sing so fantastically into old age.
This magnificent performance had place in Lisbon, Portugal, at S. Carlos Opera House and I WAS THERE. I could never forget it because I had the privilege to see these phenomenon and listen to these unforgetfull voices. Once again my applause to Alfredo and Maria, wherever they are. And may God bless them.
Kraus is a killer for sure. I truly loooove Callas! i seriously want to cry when I listen to her later recordings. her drastic decline is apparent. Her vanity and to desire to fit a customary image led her to neglect her true calling and ended up being the reason she died alone and prematurely. my heart goes out for Greece's true beauty!!!
Impeccable singing from Kraus! Such elegance, and vocally he was lovely at this point in his career. And Callas- such perfection here. How I wish she had stuck to this repertoire and not ruined herself singing the heavier stuff.

you wouldn't end the Callas-Netrebko battle and you breaks the agreement. 3 days we don't wrote comments on Callas sites but you bash Netrebko on and on.
Come on, dirty swine, answer our questions!! COWARD!!!
Question:
Why Callas' child Omero was still-born? Why she was the first opera whore and greatest shame of opera?
Callas was a PHAENOMENON, and according to the critics, maybe the best soprano voice of the 20th century in terms of technique, capacity (she could reach up to 3 octaves+) and colour of her voice. All these, of course, while she maintained her voice in a good state.
Now, I would like you to quote any valid biographical fact of hers or any critics by any sound man that can prove that she was indeed what you call her "the first opera whore and greatest shame of the opera".
There is no use to make idiotic comments just for the sake of it when you don't have any knowledge of what you're talking about. And on that basis, of course, everything you say is counted merely as a slander and nothing more.
And I think that you are just being an offensive know-it-all, but that is not the point. The point is that by trying to throw mud on Callas' talent or her choices in life, you don't really achieve to wipe it off or destroy her legend. Your comments are simply ridiculous, and in my humble opinion, people who cannot appreciate fine art should better keep their mouths closed and focus to other genres of music that their ears might be more receptive in.

Nobody can stand her.
She has a dynamic range of a popera singer, no depth, no variety of tones, monotonous, shallow, very poor enunciation of the lyrics and no precise control of dynamics.
Callas was only teacup faked mezzo who was the love of all neurotic sexless pigs from the Opera circle, and don't forget that she was fat and most ungraceful swine queen who, happened to have the record on cancellations and not ended performances
What a fucking DOUCHE-BAG!! This bitch walks out there like shes' all that. Fuck her! She's dead now, and sooooooooo ugly. Her tits ain't that good either, all pushed up!! Striker9410, I don't believe you could be right! Folks, could it be, you think the same like Striker and allegedly millions opera fans if you hear Callas sing like a Mezzo? They think MC was SHEMALE! All along she would clinks like a TRANNY and at the last years her singing sounded more and more like a BARITON? If you would see her without horsehair they might look like a man. Indeed one can see a Adam's apple.

I suppose i may be wrong but in my opinion some operas are for certain people and also certain partners. I ask a question stop looking at who was the best what was the best duet and why
It's a while since I last heard this recording and so it is reassuring to have my initial favourable impression confirmed. Kraus is a genuinely juicy romantic tenor and Callas is, well, Callas - inimitably brilliant and vulnerable. The performance finds her in excellent voice which, sadly, is something that was heard increasingly rarely from 1959 on, at least in soprano repertoire.
Alfredo Kraus for me better than a only good tenor!
BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVO!
La Divina has been a dramatic coloratura soprano with many colours and an astonishing brave technique and polish on her voice with this little whisky in .... this kind of singers we really do not hear again in our time. Today the singers who make career are the bad and boring ones... this is not my taste.
I love Kraus here, before the nasal 'pushed' sound he ended up having later on. But in spite of this, his stage presence equals ten other tenors of his time put together. He's beautiful.
callas was indeed e mezzo soprano but trained her voice to become a soprano as all the best parts in opera went to a soprano and not a mezzo. thus the warble on her top notes.
Andante is quite right: Callas was a coloratura who happened to have an amazing chest voice and she resorted to the mezzo repertoire when her top register had left her. And she had to sing it all in the chest and it was not pleasant - you can hear this for yourself on any of the tapes of that sad 1973 concert tour. No head voice left at all.
You people do not know what you are talking about.. Callas was a dramatic coloratura. and her voice had declined from not using it.. ie. practicing. She was hardly a mezzo. They make all their high notes with air. How many of them do you know that can sing High E Flats, as she did in this performance at the end of the Sempre Libera? Her High C's were glorious too.
I agree. A voice difficult to classify, but no mezzo for sure. Rather a drammatico di agilita, of the sfogato kind.
Not practicing played a big part in the decline, but that was not the only factor. It is a combination of things that changed in her life, and also, the way she pushed her range, when she could no longer sustain it naturally.
She pushed her voice for sure, using muscles in the throat, and the layrnx for support.. Viewing her videos, she developed horrible posture at the end, and did not sing with her shoulders back, her back straight, and her chest and ribs up and expanded out.. resisting the outward flow of air(that is what support is all about). She could have been fixed rather easily with a good voice teacher. But Callas , if you have read the books, was more interested in her life than her voice.

i've seeen traviata friday night at the arena. Decent singers but listening to Kraus makes me understand mare how great was this Maestro in comparison with the average. Praise to him!
I remember a Met Gala at which a much older Alfredo Kraus came on stage and out sung both Pavarotti and Domingo (both in their prime). His talent was light years ahead of the two "Kings" of the High C.

Kraus/Callas, che binomio fantastico!!!
1nikko89 2 years ago
Alfredo Kraus for me better than a only good tenor!
BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVO!
La Divina has been a dramatic coloratura soprano with many colours and an astonishing brave technique and polish on her voice with this little whisky in .... this kind of singers we really do not hear again in our time. Today the singers who make career are the bad and boring ones... this is not my taste.
BUT ALFREDO AND MARIA HAVE BEEN GREAT ARTISTS!
Grazie e SALVE!

Quién es la soprano?
:-)
maxlorenz24 3 years ago 7
@maxlorenz24 .

I love Kraus here, before the nasal 'pushed' sound he ended up having later on. But in spite of this, his stage presence equals ten other tenors of his time put together. He's beautiful.

fraluy 3 years ago
callas was indeed e mezzo soprano but trained her voice to become a soprano as all the best parts in opera went to a soprano and not a mezzo. thus the warble on her top notes.
gridster99 3 years ago
Andante is quite right: Callas was a coloratura who happened to have an amazing chest voice and she resorted to the mezzo repertoire when her top register had left her. And she had to sing it all in the chest and it was not pleasant - you can hear this for yourself on any of the tapes of that sad 1973 concert tour. No head voice left at all.
NotNellie 3 years ago 2
You people do not know what you are talking about.. Callas was a dramatic coloratura. and her voice had declined from not using it.. ie. practicing. She was hardly a mezzo. They make all their high notes with air. How many of them do you know that can sing High E Flats, as she did in this performance at the end of the Sempre Libera? Her High C's were glorious too.
kgarmaker123 3 years ago 2

BRAVO!!!

HORRIBLE: (Callas on La TRaviata)
Callas never knew how to say, she had no the "parlato", she has no italian ascent.
Her spoken words "in me rinasce...ma io.." are so horrible. Not even a conservatory student is so bad.

I remember a Met Gala at which a much older Alfredo Kraus came on stage and out sung both Pavarotti and Domingo (both in their prime). His talent was light years ahead of the two "Kings" of the High C.

The voice of Maria Callas:
- Metallic voice but WITHOUT CONTROL AND TONE
- Usnteady and clumsy coloratura
- Weak and frayed high notes
- AWFUL VOICE
- Unsteady High C
- A VOICE WITH A LOT OF CHANGING VOCAL PROBLEMS
- Problematic vocal technique
- Dissapearing middle register
- DISASTROUS HIGH NOTES....ETC, ETC......
