She was not killed instantly, but died four days later from her injuries which included a fractured skull and damage to her internal organs. She had been trying to attach the suffragette flag on the King's horse. She had been practicing on the horses that pulled carriages past her house for weeks beforehand.
This situation is not about lifeboats or otherwise, women and children being rescued first has been from the point of gallantry. Womens suffrage is in regards to actual rights, like being able to get a job other than one domestic + to be able to vote and have a say. Sexism is a result of powerplay, which has existed since the beginning of time. And generally, men hold power over women. Dont act all tough online about sexism behind a computer, go read your history books you so obviously neglect.
nobody actually knows if she intended on commiting suicide or if she wanted to grab the horses reins as when they attended to her body the inside of the coat had the sufragette flag stitched to the inside of it
brave lady doing what she believed in,within 5 years thered be loads in that crowd losing their heads in WW1,and that was what gave women the vote, the work they did on the Home Front in WW1 plus the fact almost a million British never came home so that was womens reward for sacrificing husbands and sons
You're right,-but this 'saving their necks' is hypocrisy,& that's what I think they are all about! A modern case of double standards was when Spice girl Mel was getting divorced from her husband & said it would be 'unmanly' if he tried to get half of her money;If he had all the money,she would've gone for half of it."Girl Power" -means double standards;
Amazing eyesight you people have,-seeing her 'Trying to pin something on the horse',-was she that daft! -the speed that horse was going,She did'nt have a chance! I wonder what she & her movement thought of"women & children first[when a boat was sinking,]-& innocent women & children when killed in war;Somebody once said "women hide behind babies & menstration"-pretty accurate!
The suffragettes didn't think of women and children first you idiot. It was a sea officer in command of a ship sinking in the late 1800s i think who said "ill brain the next man who tries to get off this ship, women and children first!". If only that guy hadn't have been alive, we wouldn't have all of this sexism, which nobody seems to notice except me. Also, how can you say that the workers in the factories in the war were innocent? Were they not making the fuel of war - weapons?
TalonMercenary, you did'nt get what I said,IE- If the suffragettes fought against men not letting them vote, then why did'nt they fight against being treated like children & being allowed first into lifeboats,& also why did'nt they complain being called innocent when killed in bombed factories, making weapons?-you're the idiot!
no no actually think about what you just said. Why would they "fight" against being allowed into lifeboats first which saved their lives. Why would they "fight" against the being called innocent, doesnt that allow them more defence in treaties which state innocents should not be harmed? All in all, its about saving ones own neck, not fighting for what is right
well how come Pankhurst and other leading Suffragettes attended Davison's funeral dressed in white, to try and portray the sense of her being pure and inocent, and conveying a view that she was a martyr for the Suffragtte cause?
She tried to pin a Suffragette banner to the King's horse so if it won it would havea Suffragette banner so people would think the King supported them and stuff...Well i was told that anyway.
Nearly, its regarded that she tryed to attach the suffragette flag to the horse/jockey so when he corssed the line the kings horse would fly the suffragettes colours. Bringing publicity towards the Suffragetter movement.
The Suffragetes were not heroes or role models. The Suffragists are the ones who should be looked up to because they used peaceful protests. The Suffragetes did more harm than good in my opinion because lots of MPs saw their actions as reasons why the vote shouldn't be given to woman
well... i know this may sound weird, but evidence suggests that she did not intend to die as some of the items removed from her coat included a return ticket back to victoria from epsom and various other items like suffragette flags which clearly suggest that she had plans after the derby. I agree that this is courageous but it's also really, really stupid. Yes, i agree that it was very wrong that the women did not have the vote, but the suffragettes' violence just aggravated the situation.
ye, i think she did have other plans after. but ! something made her do it... i think she just went for it without even knowing she was going to... something must have changed her mind
rynoldinho, I am at school and have just spent a lesson on her death :P That burst your bubble. If you don't believe me look in the modern history textbook by Ben Walsh. It specifically says that she wanted to put the banner on the knigs horse so that it would go through the finishing line flying the sufrragete banner

stupid women, i bet no one here wud try and do that shit, so stopp sayin she was so courageous she didnt mean to kill herself but died in the process i spit in her face.
englandrog94: It's men like you that kept women down and under the male thumb. This lady did what she believed would force a difference in order to *make* a difference.
Your response shows how much of a cheavanist you are. It's men like you (back in those days) they fought against for a *right*; there was no rocket-science behind what women wanted, they wanted a civil *right*
In other words they fought against people more intelligent like you; you arent worth the time actually
englandrob: Not throwing a fit at all. If she meant to kill herself or not there was no way she was just gonna stand up after the fall and say: "Now that showed you, didn't it!" Courageous it was and I don't think that can be argued with on firm ground based on what women (back then) *had* to do to be taken seriously. It's like women having their rights to vote taken away from them overnight ... what then? Sould those women who said it was wrong be spat on?
She had guts. And she fought for what she believed in. Shes a hero to all women, not just the British. And I thank her and involved in the suffrage movement for what they did to gain womens rights.
Apparently she didnt intend on killing herself because when they emptied her pockets to find out who she was etc.. they found a return ticket on a train and a ticket for a show later that evening. The suffragette were great women. xx
lol i concur. she killed herself. That is the thing that usually happens when jumping in front of a horse. If she wanted to kill the king there are much better ways that that (btw...the king wasnt on the horse)
Ive been doing Suffrage movement for my history project and the militant violent ones (suffragettes) were badasses there was this one women who threw an axe at the prime miister LoL. And this women Emily Davison was awesome and this idea was great but a foolhardy thing to do in the name of equal rights for women.
Come on man, The millitancy of the suffragettes only hindered women getting the vote. The gov couldnt give in to millitancy otherwise every group that wanted to change something would do the same. If they continued the peaceful protests of the Suffragists then the vote would have definately of been won sooner...o yeah, i agree with gundy81...the music was inappropriate. She died...
finally, someone has sensible ideas! lol. Watched a vid today in history 'cause we're learning about them. I saw this on the related videos list and was intrigued. Saddened me like hell.
It took the 1918 Representation of the Peoples Act for all men to get the vote in the UK. You had to be a property owner to vote before this. This means that most of the guys in WW1 trenches didn't have a vote. Btw Suffragettes suspended their activities during that war to give out white feathers to males out of uniform as well as printing pro war literature.
Actually it was for women to have the same rights as men, most notably the vote for women i.e:real democracy. what you're talking about is the restriction of freedom of speech, which is what a lot of people nowadays call fascist, which is not far off the opposite of democracy.
What point did she actually go onto the track? I can't see the exact moment where she got hit first, can you see her ducking under the barriers or something?

It is forgotten that many men did not have the vote in the UK either. Some facts:-
Reform Act 1832:- Resulted in 15% males having the vote.
Representation of the People Act 1884:- Increased suffrage but still 40% of men could not vote.
Representation of the People Act 1918:- Universal suffrage for males over 21, females over 30.
Representation of the People Act 1928 - Universal suffrage all over 21.
In photos the policemen arresting the suffragettes did not have the vote either.
