@ davedagreat69 the rolands and oberheims that you mentioned are analog oscillators that are digitally controlled to keep them in tune better. The esq1 and sq80 are sampled from analog oscillators through real analog filters. So all are hybrids, but still very different
Damn he blew the roof off that place :) Great song man. I used to have an SQ-80 and my friend was change a filter and it froze up and I could never fix it. I ended up throwing it away.... what a horrible day lol.
I also have an SCI pro-one and I'm happy to say it still works great! I also have the kenton midi to cv convertor. I must say that bassline you got going sounds awesome!
@adam872 Well actually it's a hybrid. Digital oscillators but analogue VCFs and VCAs. That's why it sounds so nice. The Roland Junos and JXs are also digital oscillators with VCFs and VCAs and yet these are considered analogue. There are many others too (Korg DW8000, Oberheim Matrix 6, etc) The difference is that Ensoniqs keyboards also feature samples I have to say that the digital oscillators on the Ensoniqs don't sound as nice as the Roland ones, but I still love my Ensoniqs. ;)
@davedagreat69 Quite right about the hybrid part, but the sound source is digital. I'm a little non-plussed by people who say they don't like digital when in fact there are an awful lot of great sounding digital synths out there, even vintage ones.
I always lusted after a JX-10 but they were too expensive ;-)
I was listening to the song "how we do" by the game and 50cent and the mentioned 808 drums I still don't get.. Plz tell what it is I don't see anydrums .
true but depends on the individual. does he want to learn melodies, harmonies, and chords like old-school musicians or just repetitive drum and bass like a million other guys do now? a third option is apple's garageband...very simple yet expandable. i'm an analog gearhead but the temptation to go all software is understandable as well.
look for a cheap used yamaha DJX...mostly crap but you can record 5 layers of sounds or experiment with reverb, delay, echo, attack, decay. there are also some preprogrammed drum and bass accompanyments you can change keys with your left hand and play a solo or fake strings with your right
You are my favorite channel -- always something new! Keep it up! -- By the way, you should do some TB-303 action soon -- that is my all-time favorite synth ^__^
EBM! :D

We had the TR808 and also the Prophet One mostly for bass lines and solosynth of course.
This is proof that the original Roland TR808 is way better than the clones and copied sounds that nowadays is in virtually every synth/drummachine
We wished we never sold the 808 ..
Bought a 707 after that, they would have complemented each other, can't replace one another.

Thanks! Yeah I'm thinking about buying a microkorg. I know some pretty prominent artists use it and it sounds like a good cheap place to start.

Ah i just realised the Pro-One has a built in sequencer. Very nice! I thought the tr-808 was triggering a note rhythm at first!
