@sheemsheem Germany had more resources than RUssia. It's just Russia had America and Britian sedning supplies and Germany had to send resources to Africa, Italy , and in France to fight , also include when America and Britian started bombing Germany in 1942. They had to keep fighters , flak batteries, and men to defend Germany.
@thatamazinggeek So, you think they should only show footage that can be verified as absolutely being filmed at the time of the narration's description? Seriously, what else can the filmmakers do, lol? Maybe if it all starts to become too familiar, that's a hint to stop watching movies and go read a history book instead? We have to make the most we can of whatever footage we have, the point isn't to claim it's direct footage of event, but to give the viewer some idea of what it was like.
The Russians broke the back of the German army and the West remains grateful. On D-Day, three quarters of the German Army faced the Russians. The Russian sacrifices were more than any nation in history.
Perhaps the Battle for the Crimea should be considered more significant in how it delayed the Germans so much that they had to fight for Stalingrad in 1942 rather than 1941 when they still had momentum and USSR would have had less time to prepare.
@Treblaine Thanks to hollywoods gloryfying of the american war effort in countless movies and mini-series, the cold war etc. the eastern front has been completely forgotten by the western world. Shockingly few people know of the importance of the russian war effort. Germany had 60% of their forces on the eastern front. And 80% of german losses were sustained ON THE EASTERN FRONT. Just Sovjet MILITARY losses were around 10 million, 20 times of what the USA lost.
@skofuzen Wow, Americans know more about their contribution to a war than that of another country. Big shock. USSR and USA had very little dialogue in the Cold War, what little Russia did say about their part was marred by worries of accuracy, and I suppose the same vica versa.
Maybe this is just my experience as a Brit but since WWII the number of lives lost is only something to lament, not held up like some score-card like comparison.
@skofuzen Well, American movies are going to tend to reflect the American point of view and American involvement -- although it was also America that produced such films as "Enemy at the Gates" and "Cross of Iron," etc. How many Russian films have been made about Pearl Habor or El Alamein, etc.
@tjhoenecke That is a fair point. I've only seen one Russian movie about the war and it was about some partisans I think on the eastern front. Of course American films will favor their own but come on... Americans at the end of the day are still delusional, thinking they saved were the deciding factor against The Axis. That's what pisses me off.
Well you took the heaviest hit from the Germans but the Yanks pretty much single handedly took out Japan, turned the tide in Africa with the Brits, took out the Italians with the Brits and helped with the Germans. Having two comepting dictatorships who didn't get along well saved the free world. Although it did condemn a lot of small nations for decades of foreign rule but in real politics there is never ultimate victory.
Troops Russians landed in Kerch were all Georgian 141th division. They were thrown to walk into shallow waters for certain death as punishment for sizable defections to the German side earlier. It was Stalin's order and up to 100,000 Georgians died in just one day.
well there was this one division that was solely made up of ethnic Georgians. Of course there were more Georgians in the soviet Army. In total more than 300,000 Georgians died, which is more than the British for example and the war never even reached Georgia

Some of it certainly wasn't shot in 1941, since it shows a column of Tiger tanks, none of which was deployed before Feb 1943.

I doubt the Germans would have had the troops and supplies in 1941. Even without Soviet resistance.
