These idents are amazing, and take me right back to my childhood. I remember being sorely disappointed with the rebrand when it virtually changed overnight.
i dont remember that cbbc in 1991-1997 when i was kid but i remember cbbc 1997-2002 with otis the aardvark he used to give me nightmares when i was kid then in 2008 i wasnt scared otis because i was going to like him
I actually don't remember these, but I do remember Otis the Aardvark... Until 1998, I usually watched CITV on afternoons, bugt on weekend mornings it was CBBC... I remember the logo though!
Thanks for uploading these - does anyone know the company that produced them (i.e. Lambie-Nairn, etc)? Some are really quirky - what's the one at 0.28 all about?!
These remind of the MTV-type idents from the same sort of era. This was when idents were fresh and interesting, rather than this sort of clean, modern, boring type stuff we have now.
i remember the breakfast bowl one at the end. i remember that coming on and kirsten saying: "Now its time for charlie chalk" and then the theme would play. good times
I know but that isn't TRUE HD, which YouTube has managed to allow us in recent times. All you need to do is publish the movie in the latest version of Windows Movie Maker with HD settings.
well it all depends on the originating video source. a higher-defitinion video may show up more video artefacts of VHS tape - as this was recorded on VHS! (i think)
It isn't the technically superior Betamax, it's the technically inferior VHS!!!
yes it will show up more imperfections from the VHS source (e.g. dot crawl) but I think overall it does give a better quality (but obviously nowhere near proper HD)
It's not just that. Recently YouTube have started allowing people to upload videos in High Definition. And this user has been doing that - try clicking on the "Watch in HD" option on the more recent videos from this channel and you'll see what I mean.
well it doesn't depend on the uploader re-uploading it, as the full size file (a BIG one to contain a clip like this) would be sent to youtube and then the video that appears on here is a far compressed version of the video that was originally uploaded. It all depends on how fast this scheme is rolled out by youtube.
OK so but 2 minutes 45 seconds isn't that big I'd have thought... And I do think that people would upload videos in High Definition for a reason - to make it the quality better than ever before. I don't pretend to be an expert on such things but if you saw other videos that are in HD (even archive material) they do look all the better for it.
Oh and vtx264 - It doesn't matter about uploading it in HD - It was just a suggestion as way of making it look better :)
i've just uploaded a new version. As well as being (hopefully) better picture quality, the sound doesn't drift out of sync near the end as it does with this clip.
(boring technical details follow)... The new upload was a 250MB MKV file, upscaled to the ridiculously high resolution of 1280x960. (it needed to be at least 1280 pixels wide / 720 pixels high to trigger the 'Watch in HD' feature)
I concur with what you said about CITV. You remember Albert Einstein; he was in the MIDDLE of making a time machine but why didn't he complete it in the END?
That would be the ONLY way we could go back to when we had all these idents until October 1997 AND, at the SAME time, when CITV was MUCH better than it is NOW.
Can someone help me there was programme on around this time on CBBC1 Scotland presented by Grant Scott and Gail Porter in was in the morning Bananaman was always on before it and does anyone remember Up For It shown during the summer only in Scotland on CBBC2 Scotland
I grew up watching these, I especially remember the Saturday aardvark when Live and Kicking weren't on the Saturday mornings and it was either Kirsten O'Brien or Richard McCourt (out of Dick & Dom) presenting with Otis lol :D
Great compilation, but I have to say this era became a bit tiresome after a while as some of the idents were incredibly random - like the one at 2.05 where the name is barely there! Interesting to see the old 1993 breakfast show ident recycled at 2.17, never seen that one before.
And at 1.12 the winner of the "compose a theme tune" competition which they rather copped out on and played at the start of the afternoon only!
These idents were simply the best, they just allowed creativity, they even had competitions quite often to let viewers design them. But when the BBC got their new logo in October 1997, the new CBBC idents were bland and rather disappointing in comparison to what we had been treated to previously. Good upload.
same with me ROTS. in one of your videos, you describe the Steve Ryde era of CITV as worse than the Stephen and Danielle era. Imo, its totally the other way round. I absolutely despised the ITV "stephen and danielle" era and loved the Steve Ryde era.
But I think that has more to do with personal taste rather than the era you grew up with.
I remember when they had their "design an ident" competition in 1998. I still think my idea deserved to win (though I am biased of course ;)) but they never even showed my entry on air :( The one that did win (which had an octopus) was pretty much the only entry they showed that could actually have been used as a 1997-2001 ident, all the others were similar to the 1994-97 ones, with the CBBC logo somehow incorporated into the animation.
There'll just have to be someone as intelligent as Albert Einstein so that we can have a time machine and go back to when we had these BRILLIANT idents.
Stephen Hawking only CLAIMS to be a genius like Albert Einstein.
Something certianly was lost after the move to Pres A. Though I do like the Pres A stuff from before the full-time move there, they do have a different feel to the stuff that came out of there after 1994. The broomcupboard was always quite personal, and of course the presenter did a lot of the stuff themselves. You just don't get that feel now from anything.

Hey could you r-upload this in HD like some of your more recent videos? Pleez, Pleez, Pleez?
DalekSupreme52 3 years ago
just add &fmt=18" to the end of the video to make it appear in higher quality mpeg format.
if the adress says "&somethingelse" at the end, delete that bit first.

CITV was better in those days though.
Those junctions inbetween programmes, with no pointless on-screen presenters, just graphics and an announcer.
Happy days :)
