I read something in a book years back where Dick Clark said that, during the time of the payola investigations, he played some Tommy Sands record every day on his show even though he thought it was a bad record. He did this, he said, to disprove the claim of anti-rockers that you could make a hit out of any record just by playing it repeatedly. Clark said the record never became a hit. Don't recall what the title of the record was though.
I discussed this with Tommy a few years ago and I seem to recall that he said he co-wrote this with Rod McKuen, but I may not have the correct song. I will ask him the next time I speak with him. I also like this song very much, but my favorite song by him is "The Worrying Kind." which also happens to be his favorite of all his recordings.
Although Tommy did work with Diane Lampert and Allison Dewar on a few songs that he sang, most of the internet sources (allmusic, etc) that I've seen say that Tommy co-wrote this with Rod McKuen. I'm not discounting your information, just citing my own sources. Thanks for commenting.

Wow!! Haven't heard this in years. Loved this song during my teen years in the 70s. Big thanks for posting this one.

You're welcome. Not one of Tommy's big hits, although it did chart (#50) on the Billboard Top 100. One of my favorites.
