Jack Nicholson was outstanding in his performance he made Tom Cruise's performance look insignificant, Tom is far from being such a good actor as Mr. Nicholson. Anyways it must have been a great pleasure sharing this great scene with one of the greatest so good for Tommy.
Keep in mind that when Jessup ordered the "code red" it was just to tune Santiago up a little. His real crime is the cover-up when it went wrong & leaving the 2 young Marines out to dry for it to save his own ass! The Doctor should have been more competent & discovered Santiago's real ailment. Yes he should have been transfered. Maybe Dawson & Downey should've had more balls & stood up to Kendrick when ordered. But they had no idea what would happen.
Agreed. The guy has seemed a bit off the wall the last few years, but he's amazing in this movie. He's great in Rain Man too, where he's opposite another iconic actor in Dustin Hoffman.
Even though Jessup(Nicholson) is a corrupt asshole in this movie, what real American doesn't think to themselves "Damn right" after his speech about needing people like him. " I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who sleeps under the blanket of freedom that I provide ,then questions the manner in which I provide it."
You are missing the point. Should these grotesque examples of men be allowed to bend the law to their will to destroy lives directly, the same lives he was sworn to protect? At what point does the man become an "enemy, both foreign and domestic," the same enemy he is told to defend America from?
Yes, we need hardened men on that line, ready to kill those who wish to destroy our nation, our people, and our way of life. We do NOT need men who violate the code their subordinates hold sacred.
point is Jessep is in control of the Nations defence. If he should so choose to kill one innocent life to save others than so be it. I completley agree with Jesseps speech.
"You have the luxory of not knowing what I know - That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives."
"I have neither the the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who sleeps and rises under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide - and than questions the manner in which I provide it."
Innocent life if at all possible should be preserved. Santiago's death was not "unavoidable" and it was not necessary. Santiago was not a threat to the nation's security, and his death did not make anything more secure.
Just as easily, the man could have been transferred. His death did not save lives. It cost one, destroyed others, and ruined the livelihood of two fellow Marines who were "just following orders."
@wasabij If you are a marine, you make America proud for knowing the difference bertween right and wrong, for having the integrity to know-and do-the right thing.
Doesn't seem like many get the message of this film. Nicholson's speech is brilliant and he's totally right about needing men like him on that wall to defend freedom. The irony is that we also need law & order to have freedom. Jessup took it one step too far, broke the law and will pay the price. So defending freedom = good. Thank you! Ordering Marines to beat on other Marines = not good. A criticism of Jessup's action does not equal a damnation of the Marines or of the U.S.
