just to add, i dont think apple will make lion depend on a lot of recources, because apple isnt the type of company that phases things out that fast, it's more likely that you'll need 512 megs or maybe a gig, because minecraft at normal draw distance and fancy graphics runs fie on my 5 year old white macbook, with 2 ghz core 2 duo, 1 gig of ram, and snow leopard
Hey man do you think they will be changing the look to the macbook pros this year and make it slim like the MBA? i want to buy it now but i kinda like the backlit keyboard? i bought a imac last year and love it...and can the MBA run propellerheads software"reason" without any problem?
I am in need of your opinion....... i currently own an iMac 21.5 inch (2009) i am wanting to get a MBA11.6 inch but i am not sure if it would be able to cope with what i will be using it for....... i am a student and i will be using it for note taking, emails, assignments, as well as Photoshop usage and maybe dreamweaver as well as possibly writing code for programs.......... any ideas? Cos i am getting sick of using the windows computers at the college....
@Supermacman91 if I was going to be coding or doing 'medium to heavy'ish' photoshopping, i wouldnt consider the 11" for two reasons; 1) screen size (bigger the better) and 2) no sd card slot (yes you could attached a SD card reader but meh, its the added hassle). Secondly, how URGENT is YOUR purchase? Is it like OMGZR I need it now - then go for the MBA. If you think you can wait a tad longer, upcoming refresh of the Macbooks may well suffice.
@theunits3 The usage of photoshop is basic at best..... as i cant use it but i have to to pass this course........ the coding would be on xcode........ the problem with the regular macbook is they are too heavy..... I want a laptop that is small enough to take anywhere and i dont use SD cards.....
Thanks for the video! I also ordered the 13" MBA 2.13ghz, 4gb RAM, 256 flash several days ago. I've been a linux and windows guy and this is my first dive into the mac world. This video is really making me look forward to giving the thing a run.
Review really helped. but backlit keyboard = less battery, and battery was really everything when it came to this amazing machine. I plan on buying htis as soon as possible!!!
How does the machine handle when you boot Window's? When I have Windows booted via Parallels on my Macbook Pro (4BG Ram) it uses 3 GB of Ram. I'm curious to know how it handles on your 2GB machine??
Really enjoyed the video, just ordered the 13" 2.13 4GB 256 Flash and can't wait to get it, have put my 4 year old 15" MPB's backlit keyboard off to get used to it but don't see it being a massive problem. Being from Aberdeen it's nice to hear a scottish review :D
@arsham1984 nice one mate, fully kited it out ;) ! Didn't know apple had backlit keyboards in 4 year old laptops lol. You won't be dissapointed with it, for sure.
Yes they could have had on/off switch for the backlit keyboard, but i think they predicted this: Most people will leave it on and then complain about the battery (and durable battery is one of the main features of this machine, they didnt want to put THAT in jeopardy, not even with no/off switch for bcklt keyboard)
I only want a Mac to watch HD youtube videos , download some stuff , like MSN , google chrome you know basic stuff , and like going on facebook , browsing web and maybe editing videos , but idk how to so i would learn if i get a mac . So whcih one should i get ? Plus the air is a bit cheaper .. so idk please help !! and i think macbook pro looks better idk PLEASE REPLY HEEEELP !!! ;)
@Thiaaguu you would be so much happyier with the air. I can imagine that the air is much faster with the thing you use, + its lighter + instant on and cheaper , go for it i im doing it myself
@Thiaaguu Through my experience video editing is very fast and great. I have used both Final Cut Pro and iMovie and there is no lag. The 11.6 model will be best for you unless you need more screen real estate. I recommend this over the Pro. It will run smoother and much faster than the Pro despite the difference in Specs. Also battery life is perfect for a mobile life.
@Thiaaguu i would get a macbook pro 13 as i have it is fast, has a cd drive, looks better and is not heavy and fat it is actually thin. and also has a lightened keyboard and on amazon you can get it for 100 dollars less!!!

After 2 weeks of using macbook air 11inch I have returned it to the apple store and bought upgraded one 4gb of ram from online store. Now I have to wait 3 weeks to get my new mac book!!!!
IM A STUDENT. MAYBE SOME LIGHT EDITING AND STUFF BUT I SURF THE WEB A LOT AND I LIKE TO WATCH HD VIDEOS FAST AND I LOVE THE AIR SO MUCH ITS SO BEAUTIFUL BUT I DONT KNOW IF I WILL NEED THE SUPER DRIVE FOR SCHOOL AND THE EXTRA GHZ AND RAM IN THE AIR HELP PLZ!!!!!!!
I've followed through all of your MBA-videoes, and wanted to give you thanks (I normally never comment on anything).
I'm getting the MBA 13 inch, largely based on you reviews. It will be my first Mac.
I'm not sure whether waiting will be a good choice (for Maldo5555). I, myself, have been waiting since start of 2010. First I waited for the MBP update, then waited for new MBA - and now I'm adviced to wait again for the next MBP. There will always be another and better upgrade
@SBalle88 Also, I don't think they'll make the next MBP update compeatable to the MBA (SSD for instance) for obvious reasons. Apple knows how to do business, and they'll not make a MBP that will "steal" all the buyers from MBA. And right now, the SSD drive (and weight) is the only thing the MBA has to offer (that MBP does not)
@SBalle88 hey - thanks mate for the comment, appreciated. You hit the nail on the head when you say new tech is always round the corner. If one keeps waiting for the next best thing, he/she is going to be waiting their entire life lol. The MBA 13" amazing, hence why I have purchased one myself and should be delivered in the next 2-3 days. The ONLY reason why I suggested Madlo5555 to wait was because I presumed from his comment that he isn't starting school till next year.
@SBalle88 ....cont'd. If its not urgent and if I was starting uni/college in a few months time, I would wait and get it then as appose to now. If I needed one for next month or right now, I would purchase it today so that I could get a little used to the machine and adjust around it. Just to reitterate, if I were in a Macbook market today - I would no doubt pull the trigger on the MBA as a) its an amazing piece of kit and b) its 'just' been refreshed.
@theunits3 agreed. Especially having it a month or so to get used to it, is valuable...
I was cloes to buying the iPad (portable, good for meetings, fun in the couch and on the run), and upgrading to a larger comp (currently running thinkpad X61) for working, plus a little gaming. But this new air seems to hit it on all my needs. Portability, battery life, weight, power for working and gaming, handy and beautiful... MBA = Simplicity.
Let me know how windows7 runs on it, if you ever try it.
@theunits3 Thank you for the videos that really answered a lot of my questions. Mostly based on your videos and benchmark test I purchased my 2.13, 4GB, 256GB Air last week and I am very satisfied with it. Have all my pro apps loaded and they load in less than 5 seconds with only one bounce sometimes two bounces. Never experienced that before. Gaming is great. Little choppy sometimes but I expected that.
Im exporting an HD video from FCP now, playing this video and no lag at all. Thanks again.
Okay I'm a junior I high school.. And I'm purchasing with y own money :// haha. I've thoroughly researched it, and I keep going back and forth. I need it to last thru high school and college.
I'm debating between the 13 in. MBA with 2.13 GHz, 4GB ram, 256 SSD
Or
15 in. MacBook pro i5..... And I would wait for the next update. Have you heard anything about it?
Should I get a MBA now and miss out on the backlight keyboard and black bezel or wait (agonizingly!!) and get a MBP.
@maldo55555 my suggestion is, if you need it NOW - go for the MBA, its a BRILLIANT choice. BUT, if you don't need it now (which is what you said) perhaps waiting for it will be worth it? The Macbooks and MBP's will get updated in Q1 of next year and no doubt have better specs than the new MBA (bumpage in flash drives, more battery life, better graphics, more ram as standard, backlit keyboard etc).
Hi I love your video so i have a question I getting a mac but i dont know wich to get im between the 13inch 2.66ghz macbook pro or the 13inch air but i dont know if it really worth the money to upgrade the 2gb to 4gb and the 186ghz to 2.13ghz help me please is it really worth the money?
Let us know if you run into reliability issues. Even though I'm a Win user, I'm really looking at the Air! I really dig it. I'd still run Win7, but I dig the hardware! Cheers!
"taking night flights, night journeys... you don't want to switch the light on cause the guy next to you is going to punch you in the face..." hahaha CLASSIC!!!
notttttt sick of ur macbook air reviews..great to see it in real world....anyway appreciate ur reviews and all the effort in making them..interesting.
@SIRUS80 backlit keys probably do hurt the battery life. But, if they were off by default and only kicked in when the user specifically clicked on a key (like the MBP F5 & F6 keys). This way, your turning on the backlit keyboard only and only when you need it thus saving some umphhhhhhh :D
Love your Macbook Air video series. And this was a great final review. Completely agree about the backlit keyboard, and was the only thing putting me off. Yesterday I ordered a 13.3" 2.13Ghz 4GB RAM 256GB Flash from the Apple site, so can't wait to have it delivered. Thanks to your great vids which persuaded me into ordering it.
Like yourself, I'll miss the backlit keyboard especially when i'm in the bedroom with the missus sleeping. And also, like yourself- selling my Macbook Pro
Hey theunits3 would this be a great notebook if all i want to use it for is standard purposes like youtube, internet browsing a little video editing and ocasional gaming because i'd use my xbox more
@AtomicTadpole I know I'm not theunits3 but if all you want it standard usage, internet, movies and the occasional editing on imovie then this would be great. I have the 13 inch model with 4gb of ram and 2.13ghz and I have to say it felt snappier in many things like boot up and loading most applications than the Macbook pro 13 inch largely due to the flash drive. The processor and GPU is powerful enough to handle movie editing in imovie and games can run at fairly good rates for a thin portable.
@MeInTheNewWorld Thanks i was planning on getting the 2.13GHz 4gb model too and thanks for your imput i just need to be sure i can rely on this computer for the things im going to use it for and with all the feedback im reading about im sure it can but again thanks :)
Why is a backlit keyboard such a big deal?? I can type without seeing the keys and I never learned how to type properly... There are some great typing programs to help you learn how to type, I'm sure. Google, perhaps?
Your vids on the MacBook Air are great! Thanks. Got a lot of my questions answered. Still on the fence about picking up 13' MacBook Pro or the 13' MacBook Air. No backlit keyboard is REALLY a disappointment...could be a deal breaker for me.
@iHoop415 thanks :). Yeah its really disappointing with the whole backlit keyboard biz. My advice would be to visit your local Apple store and try both of them out before u get one
Great review! I watched your whole series on the Macbook Air, and it's gotten me to subscribe. If I had the money right now, I'd definitely order one of these with the 13" screen, 4GB RAM, and faster processor.
The new airs also got me thinking if perhaps Apple would go so far as to make 15" and 17" models of the new air. Perhaps a Core i5/i7 power user model?
@AllThingsPenguin Highly unlikely, in my opinion. The MacBook Pros are already quite thin and light for their class, and it wouldn't make sense for Apple to make products nearly the same size and weight with the same power, which would cannibalize MacBook Pro sales.
I do agree with you that this series has been super-informative and worth my time to watch. I'm already subscribed, though... can I do it again?
no flash? :( if i download flash for it thats gonna dramatically shorten the battery life isnt it? any chance you can test this? i was seriously thinkin of buyin one but now i dont knoww. is it still worth gettin? please reply im scared now lol
The only thing I don't like about the 15 inch Macbook Pro is that when you watch youtube videos or use intensive apps it gets hot. The 13 inch Macbook I had never got hot, a bit warm, but no where near as the current 15 inch Macbook Pro. I'm actually thinking about selling this 15 inch Macbook Pro and get me a higher end 13 inch Macbook Air with 256GB flash storage. The backlit keyboard is not a big deal for me. I can type without looking at the keyboard anyway :)
In one of previous vidz, I see that your 15" mbp was was faster at exporting videos, but how do you think the air would compare with a 13" mbp? I know it has a slightly higher geekbench score but it is quicker with things like PS, imovie etc? Great vidz by the way, I'm still waiting for my 13" mba 128gb to be delivered, had the 4gb of Ram installed and I can't wait to start using it!
@shah2323 no idea as to how the base line would perform but I would guess on par with the MBA (or perhaps the MBA might even beat it). Can't say much as i've not compared them. But as they have the same types of processors and graphics... im guessing the flash SSD on the MBA will have the upper hand. Nice to see you bought one, has it been shipped yet or still being built?
@theunits3 I would like to see that comparison. I hope the air is quicker at such tasks compared with the 13" pro, it would make me feel a lot better with my purchase but in all honesty the air will be more than enough for my needs and its a lot lighter and enclosed in a classy casing with the super speedy SSD : ) Yeah it shipped on the 28th Oct, but is due to be delivered by the 10th of this month, hopefully I get it before then!
i just realized that a mbp i7 with an ssd would be SOOOO DAM FAST... i would consider it if it wasnt for the price... i mean it costs like 1000 quid for 512gb... that WAY too expensive. i wonder how much faster it would be :p
@lamReptar i admit its a lot lighter than most competitor notebooks that i've seen but meh, when it comes to the air... nothing can come close to it... not even the MBP's

Hey theunits3 would this be a great notebook if all i want to use it for is standard purposes like youtube, internet browsing a little video editing and ocasional gaming because i'd use my xbox more
AtomicTadpole 1 year ago
@AtomicTadpole I know I'm not theunits3 but if all you want it standard usage, internet, movies and the occasional editing on imovie then this would be great. I have the 13 inch model with 4gb of ram and 2.13ghz and I have to say it felt snappier in many things like boot up and loading most applications than the Macbook pro 13 inch largely due to the flash drive. The processor and GPU is powerful enough to handle movie editing in imovie and games can run at fairly good rates for a thin portable.
MeInTheNewWorld 1 year ago

No backlit keyboard is REALLY a disappointment...could be a deal breaker for me.
iHoop415 1 year ago
@iHoop415 thanks :). Yeah its really disappointing with the whole backlit keyboard biz. My advice would be to visit your local Apple store and try both of them out before u get one

Great review! I watched your whole series on the Macbook Air, and it's gotten me to subscribe. If I had the money right now, I'd definitely order one of these with the 13" screen, 4GB RAM, and faster processor.
The new airs also got me thinking if perhaps Apple would go so far as to make 15" and 17" models of the new air. Perhaps a Core i5/i7 power user model?
AllThingsPenguin 1 year ago
@AllThingsPenguin Highly unlikely, in my opinion. The MacBook Pros are already quite thin and light for their class, and it wouldn't make sense for Apple to make products nearly the same size and weight with the same power, which would cannibalize MacBook Pro sales.
I do agree with you that this series has been super-informative and worth my time to watch. I'm already subscribed, though... can I do it again?

@theunits3 how much for the mbp
olly1297 1 year ago

Great vidz by the way, I'm still waiting for my 13" mba 128gb to be delivered, had the 4gb of Ram installed and I can't wait to start using it!
shah2323 1 year ago
@shah2323 no idea as to how the base line would perform but I would guess on par with the MBA (or perhaps the MBA might even beat it). Can't say much as i've not compared them. But as they have the same types of processors and graphics... im guessing the flash SSD on the MBA will have the upper hand. Nice to see you bought one, has it been shipped yet or still being built?
theunits3 1 year ago
@theunits3 I would like to see that comparison. I hope the air is quicker at such tasks compared with the 13" pro, it would make me feel a lot better with my purchase but in all honesty the air will be more than enough for my needs and its a lot lighter and enclosed in a classy casing with the super speedy SSD : ) Yeah it shipped on the 28th Oct, but is due to be delivered by the 10th of this month, hopefully I get it before then!

Get the 13 inch macbook air 1.86 GHZ for light video editing (1080p)?, or get a Windows 7 Laptop with much higher specs for a cheaper price?
I want to edit videos and photos from my Canon 60D and I want a good laptop.
Thanks

what msn is that in your dock? I need to know a good client
MilexProductions 1 year ago
i just realized that a mbp i7 with an ssd would be SOOOO DAM FAST... i would consider it if it wasnt for the price... i mean it costs like 1000 quid for 512gb... that WAY too expensive. i wonder how much faster it would be :p
