the Waffen SS wasn't great as everybody things, perhaps the single soldier is very hard and was a elite soldier, but the SS as an army, wasn't strong like the Wehrmacht.

Yes, I've just checked with my Granddad, and he's confirmed that Les was indeed a sapper in the Royal Engineers, and his uncle Malcolm was excused duty because he was in a protected occupation. He thinks it was Kev who was in the SS. Or the Grenadier Guards. He's not sure.
