I was once a Christian, now I'm an atheist. The stages went through something like this. After a while, I admitted I didn't believe in the Bible, but still called myself a Christian. Then I said I wasn't really a Christian, but believed in God. Then I believed in a "higher power", then I called myself agnostic, then realized I was an atheist. I think our society will go through a similar progression, and we are in stage 1. It will take generations, but the trend seems clear.

A curious kid can easily search for themselves instead of just relying on what their parents and priest tells them.
I think it is more important to provide information to children about how to think logically, and teach them to question things. Children come into this world looking for answers and look up to elders for understanding. They must understand early on that it's OK to question beliefs and to not simply accept anything and everything that comes out of an elder's mouth. Of course, it's a tough battle when parents have already told them not to believe anyone other than mom and dad.
@JamesMorlan. You and I are in complete agreement then. Children should not be brainwashed, but left to decide for themselves. And I bet the rise of atheism in the last decade is going to make religious parents more adamant that the kids believe in it, unfortunately.
And just what principles of logic are you referring to that could possibly lead someone to conclude that? Every line of logical thinking I've ever followed has led me further from that conclusion. The deeper I look, the less likely it seems. If there is a God, it is as if he created logic as yet just another distraction put in our way to "confuse us" and make it harder to find him. First of all, atheism is not a religion. Secondly, I have had a rather good life. Typically, it is the people who have bad lives that turn to religion to have something to hang onto.
It's so very convenient to say that God has always existed, as this negates any need to explain his existence. Yes, it is easy to understand the concept, if you suspend all other manner of reason and common sense.
Secondly, you cannot speak of "before" when speaking of the universe, because time is a function of matter, and thus if nothing existed "before" the universe, then there would be no "before" to refer to. You cannot speak of a god in terms of what we know in this universe. If you can say God always existed, you can just as easily say the universe has always existed (and in that case, even simplify the equation and eliminate the concept of creation all together). What is God's origin?

Believing in a god is super easy, because it doesn't require any evidence. That's what faith is. I don't deny any facts. I live by facts. But facts are a dime a dozen, and are really interpretations of what we see. When I let go of a ball it drops to the ground. This is a fact. I can see that, demonstrate it. WHY it falls to the ground requires further exploration, but we don't just make shit up to explain it. God, on the other hand, has no clear evidence, if any at all.
But, God is not human. Nor animal. Nor jinn. If you were to see God, who would create you? Who would run this universe?
To believe in God, you don't have to see him. You have to know he's there. A GOD that you can see is a fake. God is above all creation. If God showed himself to you, you'd go blind.

I was once a Christian, now I'm an atheist. The stages went through something like this. After a while, I admitted I didn't believe in the Bible, but still called myself a Christian. Then I said I wasn't really a Christian, but believed in God. Then I believed in a "higher power", then I called myself agnostic, then realized I was an atheist. I think our society will go through a similar progression, and we are in stage 1. It will take generations, but the trend seems clear.

THE ODDS of the sequence of molecules in a cell coming together by chance are similar to the odds of magnetic letters randomly bonding together in a sequence to form all the words and sentences in a dictionary. Without the right sequence, a cell's molecules won't work. Amino acids can come by chance but not proteins. Without DNA there can be no proteins and vice versa. Gradually won't do. NATURAL SELECTION DOESN'T PRODUCE ANYTHING. It can only "select" from what is produced that has survival value. If a variation occurs that helps a species survive, that survival is called being "selected." That's all it is. There's no conscious selection by nature. It's a passive process. Natural selection is a figure of speech. The term itself is a tautology. Natural selection only operates once there is life and reproduction, not before. Err, no. If you had any knowledge of world statistics at all you would know that religious percentages have been plummeting decade by decade. Europe, once the centre of Christianity, is now around 48% atheistic if not more as of 2005, with church attendance also falling. Atheism in the US is on the rise with 16% of its population no longer believing in personal deities (2007), up from 8% in 1990.
These trends aren't stopping or slowing down; they're accelerating.

Fun Islam fact, women are held in higher regard than men, and in a mosque are given the upper level of the mosque for prayer while the men have only the floor. No doubt! I've said it to others as well. We are in the information age. When I was a kid we didn't have the Internet (makes me sound old - lol). Knowledge is now so easily accessible. A curious kid can easily search for themselves instead of just relying on what their parents and priest tells them.

I think it is more important to provide information to children about how to think logically, and teach them to question things. Children come into this world looking for answers and look up to elders for understanding. They must understand early on that it's OK to question beliefs and to not simply accept anything and everything that comes out of an elder's mouth. Of course, it's a tough battle when parents have already told them not to believe anyone other than mom and dad.

The deeper I look, the less likely it seems. If there is a God, it is as if he created logic as yet just another distraction put in our way to "confuse us" and make it harder to find him. Logic does not lead to God, but bypassing or ignoring it completely does.

First of all, atheism is not a religion. Secondly, I have had a rather good life. Typically, it is the people who have bad lives that turn to religion to have something to hang onto.

Secondly, you cannot speak of "before" when speaking of the universe, because time is a function of matter, and thus if nothing existed "before" the universe, then there would be no "before" to refer to. You cannot speak of a god in terms of what we know in this universe. If you can say God always existed, you can just as easily say the universe has always existed (and in that case, even simplify the equation and eliminate the concept of creation all together). What is God's origin?

Believing in a god is super easy, because it doesn't require any evidence. That's what faith is. I don't deny any facts. I live by facts. But facts are a dime a dozen, and are really interpretations of what we see. When I let go of a ball it drops to the ground. This is a fact. I can see that, demonstrate it. WHY it falls to the ground requires further exploration, but we don't just make shit up to explain it. God, on the other hand, has no clear evidence, if any at all.

I see planets almost every night. I can look up and see Mars, or Jupiter, sometimes Venus. And on moonless nights, I can see the Andromeda galaxy from here. We have rovers on Mars and pictures of all the outer planets, even of the surface of Venus. How can you tell me I never saw galaxies or planets? That's ludicrous. I haven't once told you what you didn't see, so don't be so presumptuous. The Greeks left evidence of their existence. What do you need?

The universe has not always existed. It was made through the big bang.

Your reasoning makes no sense. To say something is The First implies a before. There is before WITHIN the universe, but not "outside" of it, as time is a function of this universe. Also to say something is first, implies that it has a beginning. You even stated that all things have an origin. But you cannot explain God's origin, other than he was The First, or has always existed.
I don't know that the universe was made - no one does. It appears to have an origin, but no creator required.
