  • This is the most memorable song we, as a choir, ever sang at wlw. I've told many people about the power of this song and its potential. I heard rumor about the Phantom of the Opera this coming Fall, is this true? : )

    -Justin 04 grad

  • really good! our mens chorale is singing this!

    ahh

please please fix your shallow vowels tho! ;)

  • I'm a WLW troubadour, we're learning this right now... Hope we do as good as they did back then.

  • marple newtown high school did it better.

  • its nice but the tempo is too fast

  • Agreed, even some slight variations in tempo with certain phrases would go a long a way, but great job!

  • i think their vowels were a little too rounded

  • i liked it.. the tenors started stiking out goin in to the end. But other than that is was a good performance.

  • we sang this for district choir in bolivar, at the end only heard sniffles. lol people cried then applauded for 4 straight minutes

  • we sang it much slower

  • i sang that song about 3 or 4 years ago and it was slower than this as well

  • very nice...made me smile when thinking about my high school days...AWAKE!!!!!

  • All-state chorus men's choir 2004. Absolutely amazing song

  • I did this for Missouri State choir as a mens octet. It was amazing! AWAKE AWAKE!

  • Holy Brilliant! You guys are way better than any version I have heard...I sand the SATB version and I just love this one better especially on the "Awake, Awake" part and The " No hallelujah" part.

  • very nice boys..were doing this piece in our concert choir in SATB...im gonna have to say that i like the TTBB version better..i believe that at "and no choir sang to change the world" the staccato + accelerando took away from the gloomy feel of the beginning of the song that contrasts so well with the second half. you all project really well for being a small choir you were really brave to take on this piece. i would also like to compliment whoever was holding the bottom on the very last note.

  • Fantastic work gentlemen! We are doing this song for our men's group for State ensemble festival. You guys nailed it, a lovely piece, and you did it justice!

  • You guys dont know this song until you sing it with a full orchestra in Carnegie Hall like I did. I sang in the choir that got to premier the brand new full arrangement for it. The most amazing experience in my life, hopefully someone rips the video to youtube.

  • Florida is definitely one of the better states for Choral Music as well.

  • there's a really nice bass voice that can be heard at 3:18. nice effort, boys. good sound for a group of this size. michigan is one of the 5 best states for choral music...you certainly did a nice job of upholding the tradition.

  • we did this song last year for mens chorus i loved it its like the best song in the world

  • The TTBB is the true version of this song. I do think the director has the tempo a little to fast, but all together a good piece. I also have to agree with scotty12640, some of the vowels are not the best. Also in one spot it sound like a tenor hits the note flat and scoops up to the note. Good dynamic changes, also very good consonants...awaKe

  • I snag the SATB arrangement three years ago, and this arrangement is definitely better. There are some vowel modification happening that aren't the best, in my opinion, however.

  • i think this is way to fast...just my thoughts

  • Bravo!!! My high school mens chorus did this my freshman and senior year. I love this piece. It gives me shivers everytime I hear it!

  • Ok let me clear this confusion up for you ignorant fools. Joseph Martin originally wrote this piece for a TTBB choir. And a good one at that. The only reason it was arranged for SATB was so that women wouldnt be butthurt that they couldnt sing this song. If you ever heard a good mens choir singing this, there would be no question in your mind that this song was most definately written for TTBB choirs. Womens' voices ruin this piece!

  • now, come on

songs are arranged all the time

and there's no reason for you to insult the use of women's voices

If you can't be at all constructive, don't bother

i'm sure you're a nice person, but no one's gonna know that if you talk that way

next time, try to be a little more constructive

  • Dont get me wrong. Womens voices have the power to bring me to tears with the right music. Joseph Martin wrote this song for TTBB chorus originally. I sang this song with the Texas All State choir when I was in high school the year he wrote it. Joseph Martin is from Austin Tx. Ive worked with many of his pupils and had his input on the piece personally. When this song's real performance was done, there was a reason the piece was to be performed by the mens choir. Its the way the piece should be.

  • Wow, my Young Men's Choir sang this and I loved it....forgot about it though...thanks so much. I do believe the tempo is a little fast though, but that

    s my opinion...

    Thanks

  • MRS. GLEASON IS MY HERO!!!

  • Wow, this has to be one of the best versions of the song that I have heard. In my opinion the director interpreted the song perfectly, the vowels were amazing and the dynamics were spot on. The TTBB is much better than the SATB but sadly my school doesnt have the men for the TTBB. However, we are going to New York to sing Franz Joseph Haydn's Mass No.6 in G in Carnegie Hall. Probably one of the best mixed choirs in the nation.

  • My high school's chamber choir is singing this piece SATB...too bad our men's ensemble was too lazy to sing something of this caliber. TTBB sounds FANTASTIC.

  • Because thats the way it is supposed to be!

  • I am pretty sure that I just sang this song and it was amazing. It was with the Michigan State Honors Choir! Our director was Greg Cleveland. I think the guy in this video is the same person. Anyway, it was awesome!

  • IMO the TTBB version is better than the SATB.

  • I agree! =]

  • LONG LIVE WLC AND WLW

  • The video is meant to be enjoyed if you cant do that, don't comment.

  • i prefer the TTBB.

  • its really good, but i think some parts like where no bird sang, no steples rang and teardrops fell like rain, that would sound so much better slower, its good but i like the SATB better...

  • NO NO NO! Mr. C knows what he's doing!

And this piece was originally written for TTBB...not SATB....

  • I will never understand what possessed Martin to arrange this piece for TTBB.

  • ...you act like it sounds BAD or something...

  • ...No comment...

  • exactly...

    because it sounds good.

  • my choir sang this at State my freshmen year and we got stright ONES!.. it is a song i will remember forever

  • we r singing this in choir.. omg it makes me cry every time! and i get the high g at the end.. YAY!

  • wow!! great diction! I've never heard the male only version. it's ok...i like the full choir (SATB) better...and slower. but some great singers in this group. (i.e. first row, far left)

  • this song makes me cry its so powerful and emotional!

  • This is amazing, honestly. Our boys sang this song this year and i loved it..

  • God intended this song to be sung by male chorus only. Don't believe me? Next time you sing this song, watch all the girls in the audience get that dreamy "OMG" look.

  • i sang this in the past year in a SSAATTBB choir and it was one of my favorite songs we did

  • I thought it was a little rushed but it was nice to hear it all men. My All-State Choir here in Montana sang it and those damned Sopranos drowned out the men.

  • now this is the song i remember sing i like it alot better with all guys sure the girls do help alot with the other arrangement but it alot better when the guys do it alone my choir did this bout 6 year ago when i was in 7th grade thanx 4 really bringin back the memory of this song

  • The Chamber Choir I'm in at school did this song this year, (SSAATTBB) we did it a little slower though

  • I'm sorry but girls ruin this song and it should be destroyed.

  • agreed

  • I sang this my freshman year (which just ended earlier this month, hah) as a TTBB. I've looked forever since we sang it at the beginning of the year, and never found it until now. Its the most beautiful choral piece i've ever heard.

    Thanks for posting.

  • I sang this in my IMEA All State Honors Choir in the TTBB Choir and I havent heard anyone sing it since... I am so impressed! It sounds just like I remembered it! GREAT JOB! This is such a great arrangement!

  • I remember singing this song for All-state chorus back when I was in 11th grade. This was one of favorite songs to sing besides "Set Me As A Seal."

  • I sang this in 2006 with our concert choir and again in may 2007 as a suprise to our choir teacher who was leaving. It is an excelent peice and you guys pull it off very well. Your balance between Tenor and Bass is very even and consistent. I enjoyed it. Good job

  • I sang this in high school also in an SATB arrangement and have never heard it done TTBB but this sounds awesome! Good job guys

  • Thank you!

  • MY FAVORITE SONG! I'm Aaron the 2nd Tenor on the lower left(stage right)GREAT SONG! I'm glad I found it, on YouTube!

  • Excellent! I sung this in high school as a 2nd soprano in a SSAATTBB arrangement, and love it. The sound is clear, rich and deep; no tendency towards the idiotic and feminine "breathiness" so prevalent in many youth choirs. I've favorited this!

  • Thank you!
