Sargent York capture 80 + german soldiers and is award the CMH. Guy brings in hundrens and get the Navy Cross. Like the Black Soldier of WW1 on a few were awarded DSC, not one CMO. Navy cook at pearl harbor shot down a few plane got the Navy cross, should have gotten CMH. That is how the services works, only the 442 in Europe.
usually folks that never served our country are opinionated about crap they know dick about. the fact that they won more cmh than anyone else goes over your head is mind numbing.whites have screwed up that state long ago. is everyone from arizon that ungrateful?
@DeathToLiberalism I am first of all AMERICAN of Mexican decent and so was Guy Gabaldon. I don't know why we, who were born in the United States label us Mexican-American, because as I stated earlier...I am American (first) of Mexican decent. So I understand the comment about Guy being a heroic American : ))
@tss77 Damn right he should have. I remember seeing this movie at about eight years old and thinking what a brave man he must have been. I guess you don't get the big one for saving lives as much as for taking them.
Thanks for posting this excerpt from Hell To Eternity. I got to know Mr. Gabaldon very well when he lived on Saipan. He had long gone to be with the Lord...God bless his soul!
@dcarrero26 First off, they were the largest minority so that is only logical. Secondly, wining medal of honor awards in WW2 has ZERO to do with illegal immigration that is destroying Arizona. The Mexican-Americans who won those medals were not a bunch of border-hopping mojados.
My dad was in the Pacific during WWII. My uncles on both sides of my family were in Europe. He use to go see all the military movies and I remember him taking the family to see this at the drive-in. Even though we are Hispanic I never knew this guy was one. To my dad every soldier was his "brother".
I'm Mexican American , I have a question !Why isn't this movie on the big screen this days ??this is a real example of what we as americans can do , Guy Gabaldon was and still is a Mexican American Hero .Viva America !!
@chivasgreaser Young people are the ones who watch movies these days. Most do not care about the past. I wish it was different, but that is what is going on. This applies to young people of all races and walks of life, except for a few.
I remember this movie when I was a kid, watching it on channel 9, in L.A., Guy Gabaldon's hometown. I didn't know he was Mexican-American either. Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen were both xlnt actors who died way too soon, both partially from alcohol. I've never forgotten this movie. I hope Mr. Gabaldon gets his due. There were, no doubt hundreds of Mexican-Americans, Japanese-Americans, and African Americans who deserved the CMO but were passed over because of their race or ethnicity. It's sad
Sad when I read of Guy Gabaldon's passing. Son named after jeffrey Hunter.Must have been an honor for Hunter to portray him.Saw it when no one under 17 admitted with my dad and been in awe of his accomplishment since. Movie currently out of print. Kudos to an underrated marine, movie, and actor. They were all great.
There is no evidence that the navy cook shot down any planes.

I don't see Guy Gabaldon as a "Mexican American". I see him as a heroic American - period. You racemongers need to get over yourselves.

mexican americans recieved more medals of honor in ww2 than any other minoritiy, the state of arizona might want to remember that.

Guy Gabaldon was a great Mexcian American hero
u590wise 3 years ago 14
@u590wise I would say he was simply an AMERICAN hero! No other distinction needed and only serves to distract from the man.

This is a true marine using the brain while standing only 5 foot 4 and capturing more enemy than any in the history of the Marines.
With 1 in 4 now getting waivers to join because of criminal records, it is great to hear of when we could really do it as the Americans.
All reading this are urged to contact the White House and insist on a medal of Honor.
800 enemy soldiers singlehandedly captured with a rifle and a few grenades, this harkens back to a time when we were the "Americans"

This was a great movie. You never see it run on any station these days. Jeffrey Hunter & David Janssen were great actors who both died far too young!
