Under Movie options I have 1080p and HS movie 240 set to default. You might have 15fps or 60fps set as default and that might cause it. Also make sure to use a Class 10 SDHC card.
@shiesty90 It's a 4GB SanDisk SDHC card and says C4. It came with the camera as a package deal at Costco. I don't know why they'd sell a card that isn't fast enough with the camera. I looked in the manual and now see where it says a Class 6 or better is recommended for movies. Thanks for the info/advice.
@16thYear I think for the price the S8100 is an excellent camera, you can pick it for around $250 now and the s95 for around $350. My stills, HDR and video from this camera are awesome and I have been into photography for around 25 years. I kind of equate the my cameras to having a 23 foot sailboat and a 37 foot sailboat. The 37' will sit at the dock for most of the year but I can sail the 23' everyday with hardly any effort. My 37' is like launching the space shuttle each time.
@goldenboi24k Tell me about it. I would pay to take HDR pictures of this thing with no people and a tripod. Might get away with a hand held HDR not sure. I think he keeps it down in Kissimmee, FL so I might go down and take some better shots of it and video.
@TheDeltaFlight The optical and digital zoom are great visually when taking a picture except sometimes it cannot focus fast enough or not at all when taking a video and there is a noticeable zooming sound in playback. I really hope they fix the focusing problem with a firmware update, I can live with the motorized zooming sound.
@TheDeltaFlight One more thing, this is not about the s8100 but does pertain to Nikon video focusing problems in general, Ken Rockwell wrote in his review about the D7000:
The D7000's video is awful for general family use. It can't focus worth a darn, and you'll hear the lens painfully trying to focus in your audio. Yecch.

@shiesty90 i think its pretty good but the problem is the pics dont look as vivid as canon. im still learning to use the camera. some pics were blurry too, in dark places like night club. in low light the colors are washed out. im trying to see more reviews cause i dont wanna return the camera...I uploaded the pics on my comp and you kind need to do some touch up for the pics to look really nice. I think nikon s8100 has more natural pics mainly for people with more experience in photo taking.
@rayd408 I couldn't justify spending $399 at the time on the Canon s95 but now I wish I would have taken the Nikon back and got it because of the low light video and focusing problems of the s8100. I like the miniature effect with the s95 and way better low light video exposure.
i got this from best buys for 249.99 i asked them if they would match price to amazon and they did. Not much people are buying cameras or something, so they did it i guess.
@sundance2005 External sound, external flash and Raw cost $200 more for the s7000 so yes it would be nice to have those things in the s8100. I find the sound recording on the s8100 to be very good and even in windy situations. I really like the small size and find myself carrying it in my front pocket all the time now.
@shiesty90 shiesty, Interesting that you say you carry it around all the time, in your front pocket. Because this is a key consideration for me too; I want a camera for everyday use. But... when I watch reviews where people are shown handling the camera, the thing looks like a tank. The other one I have in mind is the Canon SD4500, which does seem much more pocketable. But... I don't like the narrow lens of that camera. Therein lies my dilemma.
@JohnLeeMD The SD4500 looks like an awesome camera. Better low light video than the s8100 and looks like around the same size so great portability. Good discusion about the s8100 vs SD4500 here.
@TimidAwesomePants I deleted all of the low light videos because of the poor quality. Out of town right now so I cannot recreate what I experienced right now. Here is an excellent review with pictures and video of the Canon SD4100 and the Nikon s8100. When you watch the video taken inside the house with the s8100 you will see big time what I am talking about. panoramabob.smugmug.com/Camera-Tests-and-Shootouts/Nikon-S8100-Canon-SD870-Canon/14291738_adktw#P-3-20
Yeah the red and gold s8100 from jr.com looks pretty cool. The only reason I bought it from Best Buy so I could take it back if I didn't like it. I just bought a 16gb SDHC card from Fry's for $27.99. Kingston 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Class 10 Flash Card Model SD10/16GB and works very well with it.
I'm ordering mine online from JR.com and I'm getting the gold one - I've heard great things so far, just from people who've bought it online. There are reviews on bestbuy.com and Amazon.com. Great video still! Cheers!
I've heard a few complaints about the lens motor being audible and loud during the constant focusing during video recording, as well as issues with the camera re-focusing a lot during video recording. Have you noticed either of these issues?
@trippalhealicks Now that you mention it, I went back and watched a couple of videos of me in the back yard just messing around and there is a very distinct sound when zooming in and out. That really irritates me. So yes it is something you can hear. And when you zoom in real close to a subject the focusing goes in and out. So I would go with the Canon s95. I still have about 5 days to take this back to Best Buy.
Thanks, I almost went back to the airshow the next day just to get a steadier and longer video of this plane. I want to kick myself for taking such a crappy video but being my 1st video with this camera and my lack of video etiquette. The wind was cooking also, that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.
true HD, really considering the cam , what about night shots picture quality ? does the flash pop up unly when it needs flash or it does every time you use the cam?
@emblemex I have it set to pop up automatically when needed. Most of the time I am shooting indoors and it is needed. There are 5 flash modes on this camera. Go to page 42/220 on the Nikon s8100 manual, won't let me add the url to this reply for some reason.
I find taking pictures with the flash are super good, only low light video is the camera's only weakness.

What video settings were you using? When I have mine on 1080p* it does this skipping judder/jerky motion when I pan.

@NoodlesSF I have it on 1080p so I think your SDHC card cannot write fast enough. What kind of SDHC card do you have and is it a Class 10?
