Allowing us 2realise our fundamental sameness from an experential point of view rather than merely intellectually or rationally. This deeper understanding leads to greater compassion. Being (a TRUE/honest) Buddhist (or Christian or Hindu etc) just means having a deeper understanding of our own humanity.
