This is a good song, so thank you Victrolaman for sharing this recording on YouTube for us. My only real 'comment' is to suggest that you make the capitalization in the annotations a bit more consistent, as occasionally things are capitalized randomly or in full capitals when the same lyric later isn't capitalized. Also, I would think "Six Robbers Run" wouldn't be capitalized, as it's not the name of a trail, but he's literally talking about 6 armed criminals.
Very catchy and very endearing <3 Thank you Homestuck for introducing this to me, victrolaman for the link and Eddie Morton for making it (even though he's dead)
I am one of those Homestuck fans, though I remember hearing this song years before then. Perhaps my grandfather played it for me/sang it as he is wont to do? Oh well. I love this song, and I find myself humming it while walking around quite often. I love that 102, almost 103 now years after it was made, this song is still one of the best I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this video.
The epitome of class, right here. On another note, I can now sing this song and am considering doing a Minecraft video with it, for all the scared little children on the server who can't deal with nighttime.
@slyer301 It's a webcomic with video sections. There is a group of criminals featured in it called "The Midnight Crew", and one of the musical sections starts with the distorted line "Make her a member of the Midnight Crew..."
It's interesting to listen to his pronunciation of various words, e.g. "skeered", "oily", "marning". Some of these pronunciations are gone in modern American English and others are on their way out. Recordings like these are very valuable as time capsules of English from long ago.
I've always loved ragtime! Even if it does come from a webcomic. And I always think of Nipper as "the RCA dog," but he must've been with the Victor brand first. The reason I think of him at all is that there's a big statue of him on top of a building across the river from here.
I was just reading homestuck and I read the update of the midnight crew with this song in it and I just had to hunt it down ;) its really great and I love it
If only we could have more reasons to inspire us kids to find a inspiration to listen to old music! Really, I wish we had more reasons to open up to this kind of stuff! We keep expecting new and exciting styles of music to pop up when we aren't even aware there is already interesting things we've left to rest in the past...
So yes, I think there is great reason that you Victoriola, the submitter of this music, to be pleased about Homestuck's inspiration :)
@Invadurr Thank you so much. I am so pleased and proud to know that some of my videos have inspired the current generation to take note and enjoy these wonderful forgotten songs and performances from the very early days of Recorded sound. Don't forget, Victrolaman has now posted over 400 entries on his Youtube channel, which include an interesting variety of the Historic sounds found on record between the mid 1890's and the mid 1930's. Enjoy !
I would say that it's sad that Homestuck related comments have taken over this video, but you honestly don't seem unhappy. You seem honestly enthusiastic about this and I applaud you, sir. Keep on doing what you love to do.
@Drouge87 I'm of the opinion that incorporating songs like this into more contemporary sources like Homestuck is an excellent thing. It makes people aware of songs they otherwise wouldn't be, especially when they find someone like victrolaman who uploads so many songs like this.
That sounded a bit snobby, I think, but it wasn't my intent <_<
@Drouge87 why would it be sad that Homestuck comments are abundant in the comments? it means that people have come here from a link in a webcomic and stayed to listen to a song recorded over 100 years previously. In no way is that sad. Andrew Hussie is something of a genius in the way he manages to create new ideas and content, and he uses his genius to educate his followers in much older art forms than the internet. I'd say it's as far from sad as is possible.
Wow! I've found it; a video on youtube that ISN'T a huge waste of time, a good, informative video to boot, and one that contains a catchy song from 102 years ago!
This song is incredibly catchy. After the Homestuck update with it in it, I found myself singing it in my head for days after. And now, after listening to it again, I will probably continue to. It really is amazing how well people could sing and play back then. It sort of makes me sad that now those who actually have talent are overlooked because of those who are popular and really don't, but at least we can continue to listen to gems like this. Thanks for uploading! :D
This is really a great song, and your comment above about how this was played directly into a recording horn gives me a greater respect for the singer and his band.
I look forward to looking at some more of these thoughtfully recorded and subtitled videos.
Thank you for your work in bringing these excellent songs to a new generation of listeners who otherwise wouldn't have gotten the privilege.
But in all due seriousness and ignoring my last comment, this is amazing, and a great song. You have a good quality camera, too, making this even better.
Watched it the first time because of Homestuck. Scratch that, first three times. Fourth time because damn that song it catchy. Fifth, I love the lyrics and wanted to hear the song again. Sixth, song was playing in my head all day. Seventh, eighth, ninth (etc...) I love this song.
Thanks for preserving history, and I'm actually really glad this song and the genre are getting recognized. Homestuck fans are a weird bunch, but a good bunch. A young bunch, generally, and it's great that a piece of history like this song is getting exposed and loved by the next generation.
Oh man, now I want to listen to all my grandmother's old records. The thought of listening to actual music from over a hundred years ago is just. Mindblowing. So awesome. Thank you so much!
I feel like such a hipster, when I saw this was on the new update my first reaction was OH MY GOD I HEARD THIS AGES AGO AND NOW EVERYONE'S GONNA KNOW ABOUT IT
I am a teenager. I spend most of my time on the internet, or otherwise absorbed in modern technology. I have never had any interest in black and white movies, or anything that's been around for more than a few decades. But today I was linked here. And you know what?
This song is better than the crap they play on the radio today, like Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber. I love you for posting this, and I love Hussie for linking to it.
@epicfailasaurus This song of course was produced during the Acoustic AGE of recording when the instruments and singers, were playing and singing in front of a large Recording Horn !! that's correct a Horn, no microphone, no electricity no dubbing , no technical enhancing of the finished product. The quality of the recording depended entirely of the talent of the performer and his back up band. Electrically recorded sound did not enter the picture until early 1925 !! Pretty incredible HUH??
@victrolaman Eh, it's nice to know they could do great things with little means, but i'd say the advances that were made in the last 100 years, overall, made for some pretty good music.
@epicfailasaurus woah GaGa AND Bieber? no no you don't know the first thing about youtube comments man it's gotta be one or the other you're doing it wrong you didn't do it right
An excellent song--I've been a fan of old ragtime/vaudeville stuff for some time, but had never heard of Eddie Morton until Homestuck made a reference to him.
@FortyTwoBlades Thank you so much for your comments. Also take the time to hear my other wonderful original Eddie Morton Selections here on the Victrolaman Channel. May I suggest "The Oceana Roll" and "You Ain't Talking to Me" both are complete with lyrics on the screen !! Enjoy exploring the Victrolman Channel and all of the Historic Recorded Classics it offers and have fun !!
Don't take the "Who is this douchebag?" comments to heart, it is just a reference to a line in the Homestuck comment. As the character who says it is an alien girl who doesn't know about Earth culture, so it's not really malicious in any way. :)
Just wanted to say, thanks again for uploading all this amazing music for us to enjoy. It's also nice how people like Andrew Hussie reference it, so more people can enjoy it, when they might not have known about it before. :)

@victrolaman Eh, it's nice to know they could do great things with little means, but i'd say the advances that were made in the last 100 years, overall, made for some pretty good music.

I am simply amazed that this record is in such wonderful condition after 102 years. Not a single scratch or skip.

Good stuff. Great to see someone archiving all this older stuff that might fall out of the world otherwise.
