I have a question... The first few buckets of rice I sealed up with the oxygen absorber and it was still a puffy after a night of sitting, however other ones were all sealed tight. No air was escaping from it so I am stumped!
I'm making a one year food store. Rice will be my main staple along with oats, tuna, beans, ect, ect.
My question is, if I were to eat one bowl of rice every day for a year (365) how mych rice should I have? (in pounds or Kilos, not cups. I need to know by weight). Anyone know?
@Ljungman42 Not to be rude but if you cannot take the time to do the simple math on something like calculating how much rice you may need may I ask why do you even prep? I really do not mean that to be a mean spirited answer. I think their are alot of people buying things while there are very few survival minded people. For instance if you even wanted someone to give you an answer give complete info. How big of a bowl or what is it's volume? Hard to calculate without it. Wish ya the best!
@laidbackguy1972 I basicly asking people who have already stocked up that already know the answer. I could guess and say 1/2 of rice makes a bowl but then how much does a 1/2 cup of rice weigh? I can get rice by 8kg sacks, so I'm wondering how many I would need to have one bowl of rice a day for a year.
@Ljungman42 aight it goes like this for example 3 people would be Rice 1kg -per day 7kg-per week 31kg-per month 372kg-per year 1860-5 years Oats 500g-per day 3.5kg-per week 15.5kg-Per month 186kg-per month 930-kg per month
Gotta pack some Georgia Moon corn whisky for an emegency! At least you can get drunk when the SHTF! Just kidding. Nice video. Where can we prurchase mylar bags?
@davettalashley Medical. Antibacterial. Barter. Oh and it has a dramatic effect on the potency of my banana margharitas. (there's a story behind that...lol)
There will be hunting and gathering but only by a small group who are really capable, but not everybody will have fuel to use in their 4X4's and ATV and will not be able to go into the woods to hunt and if you live in a city... you might as well sick your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye. Unless you can hold off against a whole city of starving people who know you have food... well Id rather take my chances in the bush.
good vid,any ex gi knows hot sauce is godsend with bland meals.rice and anything, squirells, rabbits, venison, fish can keep you alive.the vc lived on rice in nam,so can we.god bless america!!!
Does anyone know where I can get those bags and observers? I already visit mae's site she have only credit card payment option. I'm looking for a site where I can pay with paypal.
I got my Mylar and oxygen absorbers on eBay, and you can use PayPal! (I use the 2,000cc absorbers since they work best when storing pasta's). They are on Amazon as well if you want to use your credit card. Either site has them for nearly the same price and both are by far cheaper than all the other websites that sell them.
I am storing food in the event of a disaster and interruption of the food supply. I live in a hurricane area, for example. 70 Days gets you through the initial panic.
I'm not telling you what to do but I stored rice back in 1998 in white food grade buckets and I did not use oxygen absorbers, I did not use Mylar, in fact I just put the rice in ziploc bags and stored those in the 5 gal. buckets. We used up all the rice about 5 months ago. The grains did oxidize but that will not hurt them.
You can seal mylar bags with a cheap iron set on the highest setting instead of spending big bucks on a clam style sealer.. Keep moving the iron. Using a aluminum construction level with ridges on its edge works great to iron the seal on.
Good question! The oxygen absorber removes the oxygen from inside the mylar bag. Kills the eggs I assume, or at least doesn't let them mature. Also retards aerobic bacteria and fungal growth.
Put it in a freezer bag and freeze it for 2 weeks. Should kill any eggs. Then, just keep it as cool and dry as possible. Should last a few years? If mine goes bad I'm fermenting it. lol
that gamma lid is awesome! and very well priced. thanks for the valuable info.
also i agree with the poster that said you also need beans with your rice. I'd also add you could substitute flavored textured soy protein. It comes in some yummy flavors..
Does anyone know how long Pancake mix or Muffin mix can be stored in a no oxygen environment? I don't think its quite as long because of the whey but let me know if anyone is trying it.
Please learn to also store and cook beans, preferably with your rice. Rice alone, and beans alone are INCOMPLETE protiens. Beans and rice together are COMPLETE protiens. Complete protiens allow your body to live, heal wounds, children to grow, and pregnant ladies produce viable, healthy babies. Incomplete protiens do not allow for these things.
Note, canned meat will provide your complete protien.
Either store alcohol, or learn to brew your own! While I don't drink myself, I understand the value of using alcohol for trade purposes, therefore, I am getting familiar with various methods by which to create said beverages. I have a book called drinks of the wild, teaches you how to make real root beer and other less mentionables. Do you have any other grains stored? Worst case scenario, might good to store that which you can save, and that which you can plant down the road.

IS THE PARBOILED RICE GOOD FOR LONG TERM STORAGE?
filmitfilmit 1 year ago
i wouldnt buy/consume/store rice that is not organic. It is Genetically Modified now, really bad for your liver and kidneys.

I'm curious, what are the various uses of moonshine? :)

Wow, I just found out that these oxygen absorbers are not allowed to be used in the netherlands (where I live).
How am I supposed to conserve my rice now? Anyone?

Dry ice will remove the oxygen as well...

Wow. That's pretty cool.
Thanks so much for the message, I'll start looking for those buckets right away.
One question though, how can you tell the grains oxidize? Will they get bigger, or will the color change?
Thanks again(!) crissala for replying.
robinkoeman 2 years ago
The rice got darker in color. A very light tan rather than pearl white.
You're welcome.

I use a food saver. They suck most of the air out. Plus you can part up the food you know make different portions. I made a vid on it.
