I know someone else already aluded to this earlier, but I laugh every time I watch this and see Brent give Jerry that look of "how'd you like that?" at around 2:43.
I went to over 500 Dead shows and felt like I wanted my money back every time they had a horn sit in, I absolutely hate the hors, doesn't matter who is playing it. Some swinging horns in the rhythm section is one thing but one lone horn making a bunch of noise ruins it for me every time
This was one of the last great shows in grateful dead land i am not sure what was up on this night but the band was in fine spirits.Did you notice how jerry changed up the line in scarlet? As it turned out anytime that clarence sat in the music got looser whether it was garcia"s band or the dead. I thought it would have been cool to have a horn section in the band from the beginning, well a little to late for that now.
I was at this show!!! Such a great time!!! Shoreline was so much fun, especially on the lawn!! Thank you for such an awesome video and sound! Bobby had great legs!
How could there EVER be ANY 'dislikes', other than haters. And they Do Not Count anyhow - in any aspect of Life! Thanx for the post. I was at this show! One of the hundreds! hahahaha I am sharing a "whole show" on FB tonight! Again, thanx...
Just saw a Dead tribute band last night. Although it wasn't the original group, the vibe and community that these shows gather is so great. I enjoyed the crowd and the people that attended just as much as the actual show. Peace & Love my friends.
@cbarrett34 Just a personal preference...I can't stand "no-head" basses/guitars....just seems like half an instrument..maybe bc it just reminds me of the 80's..heh.
One of my favorite quotes from "Uncle" Jerry was...it was a "60 Minutes" interview & all that encompassed The "Dead" @ near (if not the Soltice show) the tour of, I recall Ed Bradley asking Jerry moments pre-show time, "what is it about "The Grateful Dead" that attributes such a following & family-unit as it seems?" Jerry responds simply, "We see our fan base like black licorice, either you hate us or love us."
@ledzep30490 I know . . . it's creepy. Something else that's creepy is Mickey Hart at 4:22-4:27 on China Cat/I Know You Rider (70) posted by Beograund.
i have a dumb question: why are two drummers needed? yes, i know its a dumb question but although I love the music I have very poor musicality so i am trying to learn. thanks!
@casualtySR Yes, crazy I KNOW, but I often thought that the collective mind at those moments WOULD lift us all off this planet to a more civilized star system. How else to travel those long light years between stars?
Phil is just owning this Scarlet... particularly the transition... he is just jamming... some of the best jams are when Phil leads and everyone else follows... Jerry used to say that he can have an off night and they can still sound good... but Phil has to be on for them to sound good... this is the proof.
This is proof. You can show up for your job and do a good job. I have been saying for years. There is no problem with having a anal sex with the sex dummy platic rubber dickers. Sex on brain yes.
@jackstrawfrmwchta , Gotta say, you have such a elogant way of expressing yourself ! Are you deranged,or just fucked up in general? Or, maybe a little of each?
Jerry why did you have to leave us. You died when I was 5. I am so thankful that my dad took me when I was 3 and I was in the child care center.. I might not remember it but I WAS near you.. RIP Jerry
One thing I have always loved about the Grateful Dead is how the sound comes from everywhere. It seems almost like every member is barely playing their instrument, yet the sound is so fluid and large.
Boy, do I love it when Jerry's On. He's definitely On here. I giggle when I see him having fun while he's playing so well. When Jerry was On, no one could touch him-- one of the best, if not the best, rock guitarists of all time. There was no one like him. And I sure can't forget that this entire band is made by fantastic musicians. There will never be another band like the Grateful Dead. Even my friends who CAN'T STAND the Dead admit that. They were absolute originals. Thank you Jerry!
one of the great serendipitous dead intros of all time. billy wanted to check all his toms, but jer heard it as a great little filll to start scarlet. love it. love these guys more than live itself.
Jerry declined horribly between 89 and 95. It's amazing. He has so much energy left here. But by 95 he was an empty shell. He kept asking for a hiatus, but the rest of the band wouldn't do it. I can't believe they would perform with him in 95. He was so not capable at that point. Some rest woulda done him good. His best years came after hiatuses.
at the beggining of this video you can jerry just smilling this is my favorite song by the dead and i can say i first heard the cover sublime did and went to find the original and ive been listening to it ever since
I saw the Dead once, in '95, and it changed my life forever. I'm definitely a die-hard Phish fan, mostly since Jerry died so soon after I got into the scene, but I LOVE going back and listening to Dead shows from time to time. And god bless youtube for giving us the chance to see the band in action from the various phases of their long career.
Got to love the ponytail bobby was sporting during this era!!
at 2:43 there is an exchange of glances between brent and jerry after brent does the falsetto part. something like brent saying 'ha i *told* you i could do it" !! jerry seems to smile acknowledgement. maybe before the show jerry was wondering whether brent could sing that high?!!
...Smokinest middle solo ever....I remember listening to this live (simulcast) that day and thinking the boys are in peak form here! 21 years later, still one of the hottest shows in my collection!
its the triangle approach or was it with a liquid bumper car effect with us all building up to a note struck by all at the same time that becomes a rock thrown into water with its rings thats color thats dragon chaseing his tail seeing wow one gets things done than my mind was pulled east the first place i felt family the first place i died and was reborn lifeaum
Seen many Grateful Dead shows and met Jerry once in Oakland. Dennis McNally hooked me up for a magazine article I was writing. Had a huge mushroom cap that I gave Jerry and thanked him for his influence on my life. While that Oakland show might have been the crowning moment of an incredible experience as a fan, there was just nothing that compared to being at a shoreline show. Something about it that cascaded deep into ones soul. Jerry is sorely missed, but the music never stops...
@junkyfungus shame im too young to have seen them, from the clip i can really feel the energy flowing from the stage...whats with him on the keyboard, always looking at Garcia in some strange way..anyway great song from a great band.
By the way he lifts his eyebrows and annunciates the line so clearly, it's pretty clear it's no flub but intentional. In fact he often changed up this line for a certain effect. Dig it!

at 3:21 jerry starts is lead solo that covers several frets, bends, and lines in multiple scales. what's most incredible is that he does not look once, not even for a second at his guitar. he is playing with bobby and brent. difficult if not impossible unless you are in another world....or from one! Jerry played with Athena and the Gods as his companions!
