Men, I wish we had tournaments and crowds like that in North America. I wish gaming was taken a bit more seriously. In Japan, you can actually earn some respect from it... Here, you can't. Even if you won SBO, most people wouldn't give a crap. Why are "sports" considered so much better to watch? Because "its real life"? I'll never understand. Not that I have anything against that.

But evo is starting to phase out 3s and cvs2 (and a couple other games i think) because they are "dead." this past year's evo was mostly SF IV and Marvel. marvel is fun to watch, but other than that evo was kinda dull this year :/

There is a post-tourn vid of Nuki and Daigo holding those envelopes that usually contain money along with certificates after they won, so I'm pretty sure money is up for grabs too. Is it as much as Evo prize winnings? Probably not, but it's still something.

This tournament is hosted by the leading arcade gaming magazine in Japan so it wouldn't make sense if they didn't offer money as prizes, unlike smaller tournaments hosted by local arcades.

Late in responding to this but there is no money reward for SBO. In America we charge the players entrance fees so that we can pay the winners cash resulting in the pool of money from players who lost.

In Japan they are not allowed to do that, because gambling is illegal in Japan and paying money to enter a tournament for well, money, is a form of gambling.

So instead in Japan they reward the winners with stuff relating to their victory IE for 3S it's probably Capcom/video game related stuff.

You're half-correct. It's true that you can't gamble in Japan, which includes paying money to enter a game tourn for cash prizes.

You actually do win cash for winning SBO, though. It's not much compared to Evo winnings(I heard it was around $1000-3000), but they give cash prizes to 1st place winners along with memorabilia. Remember, SBO is run by Arcadia Magazine and is not just some plain ol' arcade tourn in Japan.

Japanese arcade tournaments are only like, 100yen(about $1) to enter, so prizes are going to be pretty lame. The first prize winner for this one I went to in Tenjin won Ultimate Muscle action figures.

Yes, though most players do not use default colors. Also, a lot of have have their own signature colors. RX for example always uses the "Forward" (Middle Kick) color.
