Bit of a myth to be honest.....well, yes they do fail - but not half as much as you would think. I worked in a Rover dealer and I can tell you that most of the cars with damaged cylinder head gaskets where nearly always cars that had driven by someone who pussey footed it around town - short trips etc.never check coolant. If they loose coolant/overheat then yes the gasket is a bit weak and prone to fail.

These are just opinion matters here. I own a 200 rover myself, although with a small 1.4 litre engine type. I wouldn't say you can see all just for looking some re-sale values. Maybe it's because Rovers ain't produced anymore? And what comes to the opinion that Rovers are poor man's hondas I disagree. When I compare the prices here they're pretty much the same. And maybe because there is so little amount of Rovers and it hasn't got big rep, wouldn't it be easier to sell with low-price, maybe?

Behave, in the early 90s, same genre of car, you had a choice of 200hp 200lb.ft of torque Rover 220 GSi with LSD. Or a 158hp 106lb.ft of torque with no LSD. I know which id rather have.

Fit a T-series turbo to that 200 and see if the honda keeps up then! The vvc in a rover 114 (metro in my country) would slaughter the the civic as well - i've owned one and even things like subaru stis have trouble keeping up.

The K-Series 1.8 has way much more torque at low and mid revs than a B16A...A stock VTi may win a drag race vs a stock 200vi but try rolling with 3rd or 4th gear or and see what happens...

omfg, look, dont get me wrong, i like hondas and tbh im not THAT keen on rovers but i respect the engines they make, honda and rover used the same engines in there cars, alot of rovers had honda engines (i know this coz i had 2) and the honda engines even if they are more reliable are NOT as powerful or definitely dnt kick out the same torque band, if u had a nicely run in rover engine with 150-180bhp vs a honda of the same weight and size the rover would win simply due to its greater torqu

But they haver never used a vtec engine in a rover as they weren t used in any performance models!Torque doesn t make that much difference in a drag race especally considering the rover hardly has any more to begin with,And when i used to have a play with my friends vti in my ZR160 they were level peggings despite the ZR s slightly greater torque!The in gear performance is better on the ZR but thats not what a vtec engine is all about!

People slate the Hondas low torque figures with out even driving one as in truth they produce the same amount of torque for their engine size as any other n/a car it s just they produce big bhp for their engine size that makes the torque figures look so small!For example a 2003 2.0 130 bhp ford focus produces 127 ft lb of torque where as a 2003 2.0 Civic Type R produces 197 bhp and 143 ft lb of torque,Integra DC2-1.8-197BHP-133LB FT compared to MGZR160-1.8-157BHP-128 FT LB!!!

the mg zr has exactly the same torque as the VI, they only upped the power with breathing mods, the mg zr is 157bhp and the VI is 143bhp, but they both have 128ft/lb's of torque, so it is exactly the asme concept as what you are saying with the honda engines

dude, rover engines (god rest their souls) are way more punchy than honda engines, those lil ricer burners may be reliable and kick out sum heafty horses but they don't have the torque to follow, did you know the older elise uses a 1.8l 160bhp vvc rover engine from the coupe and rover 200, hmm why didnt they use a honda one.. :\ coz they have no fuckin torque, rover ftw.

The zr160 engine only has 128 lbs ft of torque compred to the civic vti's 111 lbs ft of torque-hardly a vast amount of difference. Also, the brm is exactly the same car as the one in the video that just got beaten. The torque makes little difference when driving flat out and the civic revs higher.

Compare a zr160 to a civic vti and they should be neck and neck, but with 20bhp or so less the vi was always going to struggle. Stop making excuses the rover has nothing to apologise for.

The reason the Elise used the K series is the low weight!I used to own a ZR160 and my friend a civic VTI and they were evenly matched but the VI with slightly less power is slightly slower = it s not rocket science!!

I ve since had a DC2 Integra and EP3 civic and they beat the ZR in every aspect performance,economy and most importantly reliability as the head gasket blew on the ZR after 6 months of ownership where as the Honda engines are pretty much bullet proof!!
