  • February. Get ink, shed tears.

Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,

    While torrential slush that roars

Burns in the blackness of the spring. <3

That's actually the first stanza to the poem February by the famous Russian poet, Boris Pasternak. I love that poem, especially the part that Regina sings in this song.

  • @SnowingWolfGirl Did you really think that your translation is good enough? The full poem is much more beautiful than the first quatrain, try to learn that... Февраль. Достать чepнил и плaкaть Писaть o фeвpaлe нaвзpыд, Пoкa гpoxoчущaя слякoть Вeснoю чepнoю гopит. Дoстaть пpoлeтку. Зa шeсть гpивeн, Чpeз Блaгoвeст, чpeз клик кoлeс, Пepeнeстись тудa, гдe ливeнь Eщe шумнeй чepнил и слeз. ..... Пoд нeй пpoтaлины чepнeют, И вeтep кpикaми изpыт, И чeм случaйнeй, тeм вepнee Слaгaются стиxи нaвзpыд.
  • @zhidkovv

I do love the whole poem, but I'm entitled to my opinion and I happen to like the first stanza the best.

  • I learned how to play this song on the piano and sing even the Russian part i still don't know what it means!

    .

    Her best work!

  • @capassey Thank you for your translation!

  • I can't understand any of the Russian but it's still my favorite part of the entire song.

  • Okay I'm 100% percent canadian 13 years old, and i'm really intrigued by this song. I love it.

  • @BananahGirl6 What the fuck does being Canadian have to do with being "intrigued by" this song?

  • @OReillygetarealjob First, you don't have to be so mean about it. Second, I'm just making a point that people my age from my part of the world don't listen to this genre of music. Being Canadian has nothing to with liking this song, I could be an American or British teenager, who still likes this song, and it wold be odd. That's all I'm saying.

  • @BananahGirl6 nicely said

  • <Regina&Me3

  • This is so good. Can't improve on Nerdy's comment - it's so powerful and beautiful.

I only heard of Regina 4 days ago and am enjoying every song over and over.

  • 12 people are lame, old, and cold. I don't understand how anyone could dislike this... it's so powerful and beautiful.

  • what lanaguage is this?

  • @higal0ver russian :)

  • Her voice gives me chills <3

  • fevrale

  • Oh piano class.

How you introduce me to such beautiful things.

  • It's nice to hear this song in good studio quality but I really prefer it with just Regina's voice and piano work. I think the percussion takes away quite a bit. Her voice is still amazing though, and beautiful lyrics.

  • It is /really/ hard to say, "apres moi la deluge." I salute you, Regina.

  • This is my favorite from her!

  • Such an unusual post-modern vocal track accompanying a fairly traditional piano piece...surprisingly splendid! ...just lovely!

  • All time favorite!

  • I don't understand most parts but i still love it. it's so theatrical, the emotion, i love it

  • Oh how I wish I could learn to speak Russian. <3 It sounds even more beautiful because Regina happens to be singing it. aha.

  • @Gracelovestodance You can check your state universities; don't be discouraged! It's not as hard as people make it out to be.

  • She is soo BEAUTIFUL

  • Ti Amo Regina!!!La più sofisticata e brillante cantautrice degli ultimi anni!!

Una vera artista!Colta, brava nel comporre e con una voce bellissima!!

  • @ 2:39 I fell in love with Russian language.. Does anyone knows any russian artist (preferably a woman) singing in russian on this kind of music ? (Anti Folk/Jazz) Thanks all

  • 2 and other parts Through clanking wheels, through church bells ringing A hired cab will take you where The town has ended, where the showers Are louder still than ink and tears. Where rooks, like charred pears, from the branches In thousands break away, and sweep Into the melting snow, instilling Dry sadness into eyes that weep. Beneath - the earth is black in puddles, The wind with croaking screeches throbs, And-the more randomly, the surer Poems are forming out of sobs.
  • Here is translation of this poem by Lydia Pasternak Slater, Pasternak's younger sister.

    1

Black spring! Pick up your pen, and weeping,

Of February, in sobs and ink,

Write poems, while the slush in thunder

Is burning in the black of spring.

  • The spree killer Andrew Cunanan who murdered Versace had "Apres Moi, Le Deluge" as his quote in his yearbook. Creepy. I learned this in my homicide and serial killers class.

  • If anyone is interested I used a sample of this beautiful song in a hip-hop beat. It the the song "Noah's Ark" on my page.

  • this chick rocks in her own kickass way

  • the 42nd 42

  • i love this video. regina spektor is my god

    so beautiful

    so poetic

    so ...so...

    perfect!

  • @RipshawRyan So Spektor! :)

  • This girl is such a genius with the piano... wow... It's so powerful... beautiful...

  • I come fron an Ukranian family and this somg reminds me so much of some old russian songs i used to hear at home when i was little. I didn't think someone can make these kind of songs nowadays... when she sings in russian i go all fan-girl "OMG I can understand everything she's sayiiinng !!". Regina is amazing. :)

  • This is the only song that's ever been stuck in my head for an entire month straight. Somehow, I still love this song.

  • Регина Спектор является удивительным, что она не должны использовать переводчик говорить России.

  • Why is the title in French?

  • @PhantasmicNirvana Because Regina is awesome and has enough beauty to be able to speak multiple languages beautifully. IT also makes the song sound more elagent before you even click on it. Also, ne me quitte pas

  • @PhantasmicNirvana... I am guesing you can only address that question to the Artsist herself. However it is called "After Me, Comes The Flood"... (Apres Moi Le Deluge). Who knows why this beautiful creature chose French instead of say, Russian, as that is feature in here as well, to aptly name the title.

  • The title references a quotation supposedly said by Jeanne Antoinette Poisson aka Madame de Pompadour mistress to Louis XV of France. Apparently after the French forces suffered defeat at the hands of the British resulting in Franch losing their American colonies she comforted him saying, "Au reste, après nous le déluge." (after us the flood) She was a firm supporter of many foreign policies that eventually led to France becoming bankrupt.

At least that is what Wikipedia tells me :)

  • @ecoanny Yes, that phrase is said to belong to either Louis XV or Madame de Pompadour; it´s not clear (though the origin of some very similar sentences go back to ancient Greece).

The sentence itself is nominal, so it was "Après moi, le déluge.", that is: "After me, the flood." It is said to have two possible meanings: 1- "After me, the flood WILL COME". 2- But many things hint that it is "After me, the flood CAN COME.". As in "I don't care because I will be dead by then".

  • I was playing this on piano at school and a girl recognized it, I was so happy :)

  • This song kind of reminds me of Stars by t.A.t.U., which starts out in English with a slow tempo, then has a verse in Russian that is much faster than the first verse, then more English, then more Russian. It's a great song and this song is great too.

  • My blue-headed pionus, Sei-sei, likes to sit on my shoulder and listen to music with me. Every time I put Regina Spektor on, she puffs out her feathers, stretches her neck out and starts to chirp along with the high notes. Apres Moi is her favorite. :)

  • For the italians, the Russian-Ukrainian bit is:

"Nera Primavera! Prendi la tua penna, e piangendo

    per Febbraio lacrime d'inchiostro,

scrivi poesie -- mentre il fango del tuono

ribolle nella grande oscurità della Primavera"

  • I was listening to this in school while doing homework and accidentally pulled out the headphones at 80 percent volume at about 2:40. Needless to say I wasn't embarassed. I just let it play. Hopefully some poor soul has now found the beauty that is Regina Spektor.

  • Can anyone tell me waht genre that she is classified? Because she sounds like a catagory all her own:)

  • I can just get lost in this.....

  • I would love some suggestions for amazing Russian music!

  • amo a esta mujer!

  • Her Russian is fantastic! I do love music in my native language, and Regina is so wonderful, she should do more songs in it.

  • I wish she would do a few songs all in Russian, it sounds mysterious and sexy at the same time.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

  • This song rocks so hard. I get the same feeling in my soul from this as from my favorite heavy metal songs. She is kicking ass here. My favorite of hers i think.

  • @bosshog7169 Regina AND heavy metal?...You're awesome!! XD

  • This song was a turning point for me in all music. I heard 'Fidelity' one night on Jay Leno I think, and thought it was such a sweet song that I explored her to see if there was more to her. And all I can say is WOW!! The first one I came to was Apres Moi, just because the title seemed weird. I couldn't believe my ears. I was so sick of new music til her. She isn't just good, she's a revolutionary. She's a Beatle, a Chuck Berry, she's a Regina. And everyone will know it eventually.

  • Just saw her live concert from Hammersmith Apollo, and had to purchase this song directly afterwards! Finally found another track to add to my Regina collection, she has about 10 tracks which I really love - I've yet to appreciate a whole album with her. It was a very good live experience, it constantly reminded me of Tori Amos, both her looks and stage presence. Which of course is a good thing!

  • I hit the 'like' and 'replay' buttons over and over again. Just can't stop.

  • the five people that disliked this... youre reatarded

  • love the russian~

  • this is my favorite song of hers by far. Blue Lips is very good too. But this beats the hell out of better

  • Браво, Регина!

  • <3

  • The Russian/Ukrainian bit is from a real poem - here is a real translation:

'Black Spring! pick up your pen, and weeping

For February in sobs of ink,

Write poems -- while the slush in thunder

Is burning in the great darkness of Spring.'

I think it can sound just as beautiful in English - but the Russian just fits this song wonderfully!

  • @Haduct Thank you for translating this beautiful song. Now not only do I know it sounds beautiful, but I know that its lyrics are too. :)

  • @Haduct why Russian/Ukrainian? It is all in Russian. It is written by B. Pasternak.

  • @Haduct There is actually contention about the actual translation of this poem, as it is written in a very old dialect and it does not all directly translate. Which just makes it even more awesome in my opinion.

  • @Haduct Pisat -o- fevrale = Write OF february for... lol, something.

  • @Haduct

Your translation is not quite right. Say as a russian speaker.

  • @MishaZip Do you speak Russian? That would be really cool! I'd be interested to hear how you would translate the poem (even if it is in an older form) - obviously no translation is perfect because language is subjective but I welcome your thoughts. :)

  • @Haduct

Your translation was close , but not exactly right. I'll try. ok. Actually the russian part of the song is the poetry of famous russian poet - Boris Pasternak.

    February. Get ink and weep.

    Write about February violently sobbing

    While the rattling slush

Is burning by (or "with", i'm not sure. sorry) the black spring

( suppose that we chould use "the" because the author writes about particular spring that goes after this fubruary)

    I tried, guys)

  • @Haduct That's not even relatively correct.

    "February. Get ink. Weep.

Write the heart out about it, sing

    Another song of February

While raucous slush burns black with spring."

  • @sharkapillar Our translations mean the same thing...yours is just...different.

It's fine. Translation is not a science – words are not exact. Interpretation is allowed, because without it translations (direct, that is) sound like shit and are difficult to understand.

Your translation is more direct, so it doesn't sound as aesthetically pleasing in English. It's also a lot like all of the other older translations that are available online all over the place that people have posted before.

  • @Haduct Care to share the what you believe to be the meaning? I'm not good at interpreting poems.

  • @Haduct Thanks so much for the translation! I've known this song for years and have always always wanted to know what it meant!

  • @Haduct I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I've been looking for that translation for AGES! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! (deep breath. better)

  • sends shivers down my spine...she is amazing...

  • @cammigurlgonewild truly amazing... this might just be the only thing that gives me goosebumps which i'd listen to over and over again.

  • LOVE YOU LOVE YOU LOVE YOU SO MUCH :)

You're such an inspirational person, regina. :)

  • I heard this a few years ago, and every now and then I would scour the internet in hopes of finding it. I thought I had listened through all her songs, which are alright but weren't really my cup of tea. I guess I had just missed this one.

I really much prefered the live version @ Lollapalooza, '07.

    But damn, this is powerful.

  • I'm guessing this is in the perspective of Louis XV given the quote and the paranoia relative to the subject of innocuous, less fortunate people.

  • I heard Regina singing in Russian. When's the next train to death?

  • This song is almost perfect. The only thing that would have made it absolutely perfect is if she ended on a D major chord instead of D minor.

  • @colourfulwithaU Ending on a D major chord would have ruined the flow of the song, the entire song is written in D minor, and songs normally end on the chord they're written in. To end on a D major chord would just sound quite awful, honestly. (Sorry, Music Theory student.)

  • @Nancyrocks410

When you say "sorry, music theory student" are you apologizing because you are a music theory student, or apologizing to a music theory student? Because if you were a music theory student you would know that the tierce de Picardy (ending a minor phrase on a major chord) is a very common practice, and is employed a lot by the classical composers Regina is so influenced by (she was originally a classical pianist). Especially by Bach. Do you think Bach sounds horrible?

  • @colourfulwithaU I should have been more specific. I was given the information by a music theory student. Regretfully, they're also in only their first year of music theory, so I apologize. I personally love Bach. If you want my true opinion, I think the song is beautiful the way it is, but hey, whatever you like.

  • @Nancyrocks410

If your music theory student friend needs a free tutor, I'm always available...

Tierce de Picardy sounds questionable, sometimes, if the third is on the top voice, or if it's too overtly voiced. Otherwise, it's A-okay! But, yes, whatever you like.

  • @TJDanii

Well, it shouldn't come as a surprise. She is Jewish. Many Russians are.

  • god, it's so haunting and perfect.. i feel like i am headed towards eternal damnanation when listening to this. but, like, in a good way.

  • I used to burn and then listen to this. it gave me the most powerful yet ominous feeling. i have that feeling whenever i listen to it. her delivery is just so emotional. it gets me every time. !!! she uses her voice as such a beautiful instrument. it immerses me into another world every time.

  • FINALLY this is on youtube as the studio version

  • beautiful song <3 i love how she sings some parts in french and then others in russian

    absolutley amazing <3

  • chills

  • so perfect

  • two people were so destraught by her epic awsomeness that they slipped on the way to the like button and killed themselves after hitting the dislike button. We shall mourn their loss with more Regina spektor.

  • @aniflikgirl Shut the fuck up. You are stupid.

  • @someephemeron Im confused, here. Why am I stupid? I mean I'm not argueing here, my self esteems basicly none existent. But why the violent reaction? Really, I'm not upset I'd just like to know.

  • oh reggie spek, you do it again and always.

  • The piano part in a lot of her songs remind me of Schubert

  • that´s my favourite song....by reginaaa!!!

  • In the stars is the path

keep your head in the sky.

Pave the life that you want

Do not let the world/light pass you by.

That's one part roughly translated :)

  • One of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard. perfect.

  • Are there any other songs with singing Russian?

  • Apres Moi.

    is french for After me.

    King Louis said this.

  • Powerful stuff...

  • WHERE IS THE LOVE BUTTON!

  • AWSOME I NOW HAVE HOPE IN HUMANITY! BEACAUSE PEOPLE NOW HAVE GREAT TASTE -THIER ARE NO DILIKES!

  • i have to choose one of her songs to buy on itunes! (Dont have enough money for all of them!) I CANT CHOOSE!

  • This is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. And I don´t understand why so many people think that russian is an ugly and a harsh language :) I think it´s one of the most beautiful languages in the world!

  • @ElizabethxPete I totally agree

  • @ElizabethxPete I speak English, German and Russian and so many people think those two languages are very harsh and ugly but I just think they are so beautiful, especially Russian, its so fluid and gorgeous, I love speaking it and listening to it!

  • @BlueAnchorAriel German is like french.

    Its Some Latin.

    but Russian is not Latin.

    It's a very difficult langue.

  • @567axel Actually, even though its statistically supposed to be the most difficult language, it's quite easy, and it's MY third language. And German is hardly like French, its only real similarity is that it stems somewhat from Latin. I speak German as well, and have learned enough French to know the differences.

    Russian is GORGEOUS.

  • @BlueAnchorAriel Ahh. daccord.

welll I am French. And german is some Latin.

but Russian is a hard Langue.

I tried to learn it but I didn't.

Also the Writing. but I want too. :]

  • @567axel Yes, I agreed German has some Latin.

Do not be too upset that Russian is difficult for you.

French is difficult for me! I can read French and understand some, but I cannot speak at all!

Russian is easy once you practice enough. Keep trying =)

  • @567axel I also never claimed that Russian is Latin.

  • @BlueAnchorAriel hha.

    je suis desolee.

  • @567axel actually german as the same root as english while french as a latin root as spanish, italian and portuguese, russian as the same root as other scandinavian languages like serbian. Though most european languages as influenced the other throughout invasion or proximity of the countries... french and german are very different with barely any resemblance, at least not more than between english and french.

  • @Lacrymosa1307 - that's called Slavic, not Scandinavian roflmao

  • I love her so much.

  • Google "Pasternak Black Spring"

  • APRES MOI: LE DELUGE. ♥ ♥ ♥

  • Gosh, my boyfriend is from Russia. I always thought the language sounded harsh and scary, but Regina literally makes it sound like music to my ears.

  • @shannabanana11 Russian is a much more emotional and loving language than english. All languages have their purposes but Russian is "like the russians" is like butter on the soul.

  • @uncumtrollable I can't agree more!

  • @MsDrkadzija Yes you can.

  • Stalin woulda been like HOLY FUCK!! and start cryin

  • First thing tomorrow, go find and buy that album. :O

  • OMG her voice......

  • very beautiful song

  • I love this song SO much!!!

  • I luv her work. she inspired me to play piano and no im pretty good at it

  • I love that the piano is similar to Schubert's Der Erlkoenig. Wonderful twist!

  • @Vitaminbach that's what I thought! I blended this and the Erlking on Pandora, but it's not finding anything comparable...

  • The first time I heard this song I was like "Oh hey, this is cool." then I listened to it again, paying more attention, and I was like "HOLY CRUD THIS IS BRILLIANT!"

  • I'm not use to hearing such dark songs from Regina Spektor. I love it! There is nothing that Regina cannot pull off.
