That's actually the first stanza to the poem February by the famous Russian poet, Boris Pasternak. I love that poem, especially the part that Regina sings in this song.
@SnowingWolfGirl Did you really think that your translation is good enough? The full poem is much more beautiful than the first quatrain, try to learn that... Февраль. Достать чepнил и плaкaть Писaть o фeвpaлe нaвзpыд, Пoкa гpoxoчущaя слякoть Вeснoю чepнoю гopит. Дoстaть пpoлeтку. There is no better place in a world to form as an artist than USA, in USSR she will be probably lost in "dark 90's" and will be known in a small underground community. I'm very glad she can get her height and push her talent forward. In place, where she is known and appreciated.
Small part of lyrics in Russian, from famous Russian poet Boris Pasternak is perfectly combine with song and gives a little bit of style with her amazing voice.
@OReillygetarealjob First, you don't have to be so mean about it. Second, I'm just making a point that people my age from my part of the world don't listen to this genre of music. Being Canadian has nothing to with liking this song, I could be an American or British teenager, who still likes this song, and it wold be odd. That's all I'm saying.
It's nice to hear this song in good studio quality but I really prefer it with just Regina's voice and piano work. I think the percussion takes away quite a bit. Her voice is still amazing though, and beautiful lyrics.
@ 2:39 I fell in love with Russian language.. Does anyone knows any russian artist (preferably a woman) singing in russian on this kind of music ? (Anti Folk/Jazz) Thanks all
2 and other parts Through clanking wheels, through church bells ringing A hired cab will take you where The town has ended, where the showers Are louder still than ink and tears. Where rooks, like charred pears, from the branches In thousands break away, and sweep Into the melting snow, instilling Dry sadness into eyes that weep. Beneath - the earth is black in puddles, The wind with croaking screeches throbs, And-the more randomly, the surer Poems are forming out of sobs.
The spree killer Andrew Cunanan who murdered Versace had "Apres Moi, Le Deluge" as his quote in his yearbook. Creepy. I learned this in my homicide and serial killers class.
I come fron an Ukranian family and this somg reminds me so much of some old russian songs i used to hear at home when i was little. I didn't think someone can make these kind of songs nowadays... when she sings in russian i go all fan-girl "OMG I can understand everything she's sayiiinng !!". Regina is amazing. :)
@PhantasmicNirvana Because Regina is awesome and has enough beauty to be able to speak multiple languages beautifully. IT also makes the song sound more elagent before you even click on it. Also, ne me quitte pas
@PhantasmicNirvana... I am guesing you can only address that question to the Artsist herself. However it is called "After Me, Comes The Flood"... (Apres Moi Le Deluge). Who knows why this beautiful creature chose French instead of say, Russian, as that is feature in here as well, to aptly name the title.
The title references a quotation supposedly said by Jeanne Antoinette Poisson aka Madame de Pompadour mistress to Louis XV of France. Apparently after the French forces suffered defeat at the hands of the British resulting in Franch losing their American colonies she comforted him saying, "Au reste, après nous le déluge." (after us the flood) She was a firm supporter of many foreign policies that eventually led to France becoming bankrupt.
@ecoanny Yes, that phrase is said to belong to either Louis XV or Madame de Pompadour; it´s not clear (though the origin of some very similar sentences go back to ancient Greece).
The sentence itself is nominal, so it was "Après moi, le déluge.", that is: "After me, the flood." It is said to have two possible meanings: 1- "After me, the flood WILL COME". 2- But many things hint that it is "After me, the flood CAN COME.". As in "I don't care because I will be dead by then".
This song kind of reminds me of Stars by t.A.t.U., which starts out in English with a slow tempo, then has a verse in Russian that is much faster than the first verse, then more English, then more Russian. It's a great song and this song is great too.
My blue-headed pionus, Sei-sei, likes to sit on my shoulder and listen to music with me. Every time I put Regina Spektor on, she puffs out her feathers, stretches her neck out and starts to chirp along with the high notes. Apres Moi is her favorite. :)
I was listening to this in school while doing homework and accidentally pulled out the headphones at 80 percent volume at about 2:40. Needless to say I wasn't embarassed. I just let it play. Hopefully some poor soul has now found the beauty that is Regina Spektor.
This song rocks so hard. I get the same feeling in my soul from this as from my favorite heavy metal songs. She is kicking ass here. My favorite of hers i think.
This song was a turning point for me in all music. I heard 'Fidelity' one night on Jay Leno I think, and thought it was such a sweet song that I explored her to see if there was more to her. And all I can say is WOW!! The first one I came to was Apres Moi, just because the title seemed weird. I couldn't believe my ears. I was so sick of new music til her. She isn't just good, she's a revolutionary. She's a Beatle, a Chuck Berry, she's a Regina. And everyone will know it eventually.
Just saw her live concert from Hammersmith Apollo, and had to purchase this song directly afterwards! Finally found another track to add to my Regina collection, she has about 10 tracks which I really love - I've yet to appreciate a whole album with her. It was a very good live experience, it constantly reminded me of Tori Amos, both her looks and stage presence. Which of course is a good thing!
@Haduct There is actually contention about the actual translation of this poem, as it is written in a very old dialect and it does not all directly translate. Which just makes it even more awesome in my opinion.
@MishaZip Do you speak Russian? That would be really cool! I'd be interested to hear how you would translate the poem (even if it is in an older form) - obviously no translation is perfect because language is subjective but I welcome your thoughts. :)
Your translation was close , but not exactly right. I'll try. ok. Actually the russian part of the song is the poetry of famous russian poet - Boris Pasternak.
February. Get ink and weep.
Write about February violently sobbing
While the rattling slush
Is burning by (or "with", i'm not sure. sorry) the black spring
( suppose that we chould use "the" because the author writes about particular spring that goes after this fubruary)
@sharkapillar Our translations mean the same thing...yours is just...different.
It's fine. Translation is not a science – words are not exact. Interpretation is allowed, because without it translations (direct, that is) sound like shit and are difficult to understand.
Your translation is more direct, so it doesn't sound as aesthetically pleasing in English. It's also a lot like all of the other older translations that are available online all over the place that people have posted before.
I heard this a few years ago, and every now and then I would scour the internet in hopes of finding it. I thought I had listened through all her songs, which are alright but weren't really my cup of tea. I guess I had just missed this one.
I really much prefered the live version @ Lollapalooza, '07.
@colourfulwithaU Ending on a D major chord would have ruined the flow of the song, the entire song is written in D minor, and songs normally end on the chord they're written in. To end on a D major chord would just sound quite awful, honestly. (Sorry, Music Theory student.)
When you say "sorry, music theory student" are you apologizing because you are a music theory student, or apologizing to a music theory student? Because if you were a music theory student you would know that the tierce de Picardy (ending a minor phrase on a major chord) is a very common practice, and is employed a lot by the classical composers Regina is so influenced by (she was originally a classical pianist). Especially by Bach. Do you think Bach sounds horrible?
@colourfulwithaU I should have been more specific. I was given the information by a music theory student. Regretfully, they're also in only their first year of music theory, so I apologize. I personally love Bach. If you want my true opinion, I think the song is beautiful the way it is, but hey, whatever you like.
If your music theory student friend needs a free tutor, I'm always available...
Tierce de Picardy sounds questionable, sometimes, if the third is on the top voice, or if it's too overtly voiced. Otherwise, it's A-okay! But, yes, whatever you like.
I used to burn and then listen to this. it gave me the most powerful yet ominous feeling. i have that feeling whenever i listen to it. her delivery is just so emotional. it gets me every time. !!! she uses her voice as such a beautiful instrument. it immerses me into another world every time.
two people were so destraught by her epic awsomeness that they slipped on the way to the like button and killed themselves after hitting the dislike button. We shall mourn their loss with more Regina spektor.
@someephemeron Im confused, here. Why am I stupid? I mean I'm not argueing here, my self esteems basicly none existent. But why the violent reaction? Really, I'm not upset I'd just like to know.
Not only is Regina Spektor inspiring, but inspiring is Regina Spektor. She is simply gorgeous. Please watch me attempting at trying to capture a little of her essence on my channel. Thank you(:
This is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. And I don´t understand why so many people think that russian is an ugly and a harsh language :) I think it´s one of the most beautiful languages in the world!
@ElizabethxPete I speak English, German and Russian and so many people think those two languages are very harsh and ugly but I just think they are so beautiful, especially Russian, its so fluid and gorgeous, I love speaking it and listening to it!
@567axel Actually, even though its statistically supposed to be the most difficult language, it's quite easy, and it's MY third language. And German is hardly like French, its only real similarity is that it stems somewhat from Latin. I speak German as well, and have learned enough French to know the differences.
@567axel actually german as the same root as english while french as a latin root as spanish, italian and portuguese, russian as the same root as other scandinavian languages like serbian. Though most european languages as influenced the other throughout invasion or proximity of the countries... french and german are very different with barely any resemblance, at least not more than between english and french.
@shannabanana11 Russian is a much more emotional and loving language than english. All languages have their purposes but Russian is "like the russians" is like butter on the soul.
The first time I heard this song I was like "Oh hey, this is cool." then I listened to it again, paying more attention, and I was like "HOLY CRUD THIS IS BRILLIANT!"
February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring. <3

thekevorchestra 9 months ago
This song is almost perfect. The only thing that would have made it absolutely perfect is if she ended on a D major chord instead of D minor.
colourfulwithaU 9 months ago
@colourfulwithaU Ending on a D major chord would have ruined the flow of the song, the entire song is written in D minor, and songs normally end on the chord they're written in. To end on a D major chord would just sound quite awful, honestly. (Sorry, Music Theory student.)
Nancyrocks410 9 months ago
@Nancyrocks410
Do you think Bach sounds horrible?
colourfulwithaU 9 months ago
@colourfulwithaU I should have been more specific. I was given the information by a music theory student. Regretfully, they're also in only their first year of music theory, so I apologize. I personally love Bach. If you want my true opinion, I think the song is beautiful the way it is, but hey, whatever you like.
Nancyrocks410 9 months ago
@Nancyrocks410
If your music theory student friend needs a free tutor, I'm always available...
Tierce de Picardy sounds questionable, sometimes, if the third is on the top voice, or if it's too overtly voiced. Otherwise, it's A-okay! But, yes, whatever you like.

@TJDanii
Well, it shouldn't come as a surprise. She is Jewish. Many Russians are.

This is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. And I don´t understand why so many people think that russian is an ugly and a harsh language :) I think it´s one of the most beautiful languages in the world!

@ElizabethxPete I totally agree

@ElizabethxPete I speak English, German and Russian and so many people think those two languages are very harsh and ugly but I just think they are so beautiful, especially Russian, its so fluid and gorgeous, I love speaking it and listening to it!
BlueAnchorAriel 1 year ago
@BlueAnchorAriel German is like french.
Its Some Latin.
but Russian is not Latin.
It's a very difficult langue.
567axel 1 year ago
@567axel Actually, even though its statistically supposed to be the most difficult language, it's quite easy, and it's MY third language. And German is hardly like French, its only real similarity is that it stems somewhat from Latin. I speak German as well, and have learned enough French to know the differences.
Russian is GORGEOUS.
BlueAnchorAriel 1 year ago
@BlueAnchorAriel Ahh. daccord.
welll I am French. And german is some Latin.
but Russian is a hard Langue.
I tried to learn it but I didn't.
Also the Writing. but I want too. :]
567axel 1 year ago
@567axel Yes, I agreed German has some Latin.
Do not be too upset that Russian is difficult for you.
French is difficult for me! I can read French and understand some, but I cannot speak at all!
Russian is easy once you practice enough. Keep trying =)
BlueAnchorAriel 1 year ago
@567axel I also never claimed that Russian is Latin.
BlueAnchorAriel 1 year ago
@BlueAnchorAriel hha.
je suis desolee.
567axel 1 year ago
@567axel actually german as the same root as english while french as a latin root as spanish, italian and portuguese, russian as the same root as other scandinavian languages like serbian. Though most european languages as influenced the other throughout invasion or proximity of the countries... french and german are very different with barely any resemblance, at least not more than between english and french.

shannabanana11 1 year ago
@shannabanana11 Russian is a much more emotional and loving language than english. All languages have their purposes but Russian is "like the russians" is like butter on the soul.

@Vitaminbach that's what I thought! I blended this and the Erlking on Pandora, but it's not finding anything comparable...
