ive seen this a couple times with buddies riding together, sometimes the film doesnt do the slope of the hill justice and itsnot hard to see why he couldnt keep it out of the rocks. i coulda made it of course. but thats too bad! :)
I think he was so confident he could climb the hill that he didn't plan a good escape route. He cracked a few ribs and bruised a lung. His helmet was cracked too. The hill naturally funnels towards the cliff so that is where he went. He would have been free and clear if he went to the left and down the other little chute. Hindsight 20/20 :).
