  • Great lesson. Something not talked about much but essential as you demonstrated so well.

Why is your band named Satan and Adam?

  • Great stuff from over here in England but I would like tabs or lessons on improv like you just did because it was amazing :)

  • well Mr. Gussow i started learning harmonica from you years ago, unfortunately my harp got rained on and ruined. iv recently come back to it and your lessons are just as good as i remember.

  • just want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos and really keep me interested. Awesome video, great teacher.

  • Holy Crap I love this

    Thanks for posting!

  • this music made me smile.

  • adam hi it's cain just asking to see if you will ever do another on the back porch video set again as the sun is going down? as this video is well worn be me and millions more. thanks again adam

  • I just bought a copy of the tab for $1. Who is Wayne Snyder? These aren't tabbed by yourself?

  • what brand of harp are you using?

  • Comment removed

  • Adam, you are the man. Keep doing what you are doing. Just looking at the other comments I can see how much you are inspiring beginners like myself. I know I speak for everyone who has ever picked up any instrument when I say that sometimes you just want to throw it. You are passing on a beautiful thing and I hope you stay healthy and happy for a long time because if it. I appreciate your time. Thank you.

  • Hey, great.

Im a beginner and hope i can play sometime so good.

    Perfekt

  • Adam, hearing you play inspires me. I just started playing and sometimes I get discouraged. When I feel that way I turn on one of your videos and it reminds me so much of being in Louisiana that I just have to pick up my harp. Thank you for sharing.

  • How do you make that nice vibrating sound at the end of your first song at 3:30? Don't you have a video of that?

  • Good lesson ... but why not take a C harp for a lesson? Everybody got one of those..

  • @NickeyWhitfield: I deliberately created this lesson series in a way that made it open to everybody AND placed a small but real burden on students. As I noted in my channel description at the very beginning, these lessons aren't oriented towards beginners. They're oriented towards people who already play some harp, are serious students, and want to take the next step. Those people all have a Bb harp, or are willing to purchase one. I want people who are willing to do the work.

  • @KudzuRunner Guy, I'm your biggest fan. But it's not a matter of whether I take it seriously or not... just a matter of money. I got two Hohner Pro MS Harps, C and G. And a Hohner Special 20s in A. I would love to have more but I have to be reasonable. The three I got go a long way.

Hope you see what I'm saying here. No hard feelings.

  • @KudzuRunner hey adam i think you should do more lessons towards beginers :)

  • @KudzuRunner So is a Bb harp preferable sir? I'm an "intermediate" level harp player in New Zealand and love this lesson.

    Cheers from down under.

  • @blackprincess82: It's not preferable; it's just the one that I happened to use for many of my early lessons. Most beginners don't have one--they use a key of C--but my lessons weren't oriented towards beginners. Most players who've been playing for a couple of years probably have a Bb. I wanted to make my lessons accessible, but I wanted players to meet me halfway. You'd be amazed how many would-be players aren't willing to do that.

  • @NickeyWhitfield You can transpose it using software. Or even healthier, stretch your ear and do it in your mind :P

  • @NickeyWhitfield also after watching and following adam for a whole year and 2 months, and taking from him loads of teachings i started using my Bb now it's my favourite flavour of harp now, although i love and own almost all keys i have broken in my Bb custom build and it's even better after a week at blowing and sucking so what im saying is like adam really if your in then go out and buy Bb key and then let your collection grow

  • Awesome, I purchased my first harp 2 hours ago, really looking forward to breaking it out of my pocket in the near future to play some "slow funky blues" at will. Keep the videos coming friend. Jeremiah from NC

  • tocai la raja adam gussow culiao, eris mi idolo!

  • Like a Jazz man once said "It's harder to play slow"

  • Wow

  • you're a fantastic teacher, I enjoy your method and explanations. I've never considered attempting to learn to play the harp, always loved listening to a player like you, and with your explanations it makes me want to give it a try. Thank you sir.

  • what key is that?

  • @rafa3944 B flat.

  • Sir, you are a harmonica playing God amongst men!

  • WHICH TONE IS YOUR HARMONICA?

  • @loloman117 B flat.

  • Whats the secret bout hitting single notes? I bought myself today a c.a. Seydel Söhne Big Six blues harp and i wonder how this works. I hit them only by accident :D is it because the harp is shorter than usual harps and the distances between the notes are smaller or are they the same? I think the technique is very important too isnt it? :D so i would be very thankful if anyone could help me cause i want to learn playing harp especially playing blues!!! Btw great video!!!

  • man you are great

  • Thank you to the few people who disliked this video so that the likes bar now looks like a cigarette... well done :) now that's blues.

  • This is quite a fantastic video. I was wondering what was the correct way at going at this and as usual, you had an answer already posted for us.

  • I am not a harmonica player (I have one that I've never really learned to play at all) but I like the music. I stumbled in here and I just want to say that you are an excellent presenter (in addition to your harp skills).

  • man i wish i could play like that!

  • Amazing, I've watched this video a half dozen times and every time I learn a lil more and play a lil deeper. Almost sounds how I feel at the times I wanna play it. Thanks A.G. good luck sir.

  • excelente! please make more videos about slowblues man

    dan ganas de tomar cerveza!

  • nice of you to show us how good u play but i would like to know how to play that song :)

  • Love this. Thanks you very much! Do you recommend a b-flat MAJOR harp or a b flat MINOR harp?

  • LIAR!!!YOU ARE HORATIO CAINE!!!

  • I want to learn that :( Its so great... just sitting in the afternoon sun and jam

  • Yep, heartfelt tunes coming from the gut that are in sync (beat) with the Universe. You can tell when it works, and really notice when it doesn't. Love your work!

  • DAMN YOU YOU SON OF A GUN, REMINDING OF US THE STUFF THAT MEANS EVERY THING. thanks Adam you are the professor of the harp. may you rock for ever more! Nik from Eugene track town Oregon

  • Generous Genius !

  • *plays awesome riff*

    "alright here's some simple playing"

    *plays another awesome riff*

  • I dont get why hes street name is not "The Prof." I think its fitting. His style isnt sloppy hoping to nail a few good notes. Very precise, poetic form. So, nice playing Prof.

  • love it man, makes me keep on trying to do this. bought a bunch of harps and love my B

  • The slow blues that you play starting around 5:30 is very soulful. Excellent time keeping and excellent relaxed phrasing. Thanks Adam.

  • great lesson! what wouldn't i give to sit and jam with you and learn more

  • 4:43 is very harsh but absolutely true. Anyone can learn to play all the right notes, even in the right order, but if it's not at the right time, it just doesn't work.

  • wow!! cool!!!

  • Ya man!!!

  • At 3:25 he broke the neighbours house while hes playin

  • @DixxyRecords: Nah, some college kid threw trash in a dumpster.

  • @KudzuRunner

Love your vid's ur awsome! How do you get the effect at 1:56. Thanks

  • @scottyghouse play 2 5 vibrato, so you block the 3 4 with your tongue, then inhale through the throat creating vibrato. ps also look up tongue blocking & octave playing on youtube.

  • Beautifully understated stuff!

So often, it's the SILENCES between the notes that really captivate...

    Kindest Regards,

    Bryan (Downunder)

  • nice leson!

  • Adam, very cool Man. I like him and her Musik.

    greetings

    R.

  • This has got to be the best example of mean ol' down low dirty slow blues I have ever seen! God! Adam has got the feelin'

  • thanks for sharing insights on how to play in a "slow and sweet" style...a very "hang loose" thang (in hawaii).

  • It seems like every time I practice this tune from the tab sheet you sell, I learn something new and I sound just a tad better than the time before. Thanks for that.

  • typical porch monkey. playin them blues.

  • I gotta say Mr. Gussow, this might be the most important video to me. I mean other than the Blues scale videos this has taught me the most. I love it man. I've watched it probably more than 50 times and I try to emulate your sound but I just can't. But what i get is still cool. anyway i just gotta say for the harp players trying to learn, you need to study this video!

    Thanks for everything sensei,

    "A Poor Drunken Hearted Boy"

  • Wow man! This is some kewl shit

  • sehr gut gemacht!!! DANKE! Daumen hoch!

  • DAM !

  • adam, i would just like to say that i have been playing harp for two years, i live in the uk so there are not that many great harp players here, and you have taught me everything i know and can do and i have never even had the pleasure of meeting you, so thankyou so much for giving back and sharing your skills and knowlge with the world of harp players. i have come on a great deal since i started and it all down to you, thanks and keep posting them lessons.

  • @tom27j : Thanks! I'm glad to know that I've had that effect.

  • @tom27j +1 Adam is great but please have a look around in the UK. There are many good players and teachers here. Try the (UK) National Harmonica league harmonica.co.uk for starters. :)

  • bit@tom27j not that many great players in the uk!! ha you need to get out a bit pal!

  • Great......

  • hey, sorry if this question was already posed (i looked for it in previous comments but i didn't see it), but what key are you playing in?

  • @superfly1191 o wait he said Bb in the video lol, nvm

  • its has now become my pssion to learn slow blues, i bought myself a harmonica yesterday, in C, but i havent a clue where to start, i dnt have the internet at home, which is a big hold back

  • genioooo saludos desde argentina

  • A classic!

Great advice and I love hearing you play -- many thanks!

  • from 5.49 to 6.28 is exactly how i feel. that bit seems like you want change in some aspect of your life (high notes) but it is unlikely or its gonna be hard work and you kinda whine about it with the low notes. hence why you feel blue. but dont let em see you bleed! play harp.

  • Wonderful lesson Adam!!

  • its incredible that for £3 i can replicate the sound of a feedbacking guitar, a violin and other instruments without a amp and on a pocket sized little harp

  • Beautifull tone

  • any tabs or something for this song? cause i like this SO much. it's awesome, really. congratulations

  • Thank U very much!!!!

  • That's what I aim for, just sit down and relax playing something beautiful, thanks for that

  • Hi Adam,

Could you briefly explain to me what technique that's called what you do @ 6:15 and how it's done?? Is that a "toungue flicker" or "tit tit tit tit" with air control? Thanks alot for your vids bro!

  • Thanks Adam for being such a great teacher and player. It always makes my day.

  • When I first started with harp around 4 month ago I didn`t know anything about the harmonica, and today, thanks to you, I can`t live without it. You are such and inspiration Adam. Keep up your excellent work!

  • Thanks! I'm glad to have inspired you.

  • @ElProbeta i second that!

  • Hi Adam, I didn't know about this vid before tonight ... it's gold dust! * * * * * I only just discovered this foot-tapping philosophy after years of playing, so this vid was perfect for me. Thanks (yet again) from the UK, Mark

  • great video i've watched a lot of your videos and it's really helped me with my playing! you have great ideas an you really know how to jam thanks for the help!

  • Hello Adam,

I'm german and so I don't understand most of that what you are saying (only some "Bruchstücke"), so I cannot "bewerten" (rate?, appraise?, benchmark? what's the wright word?) what you say, *but you are playing wonderful!*

  • whats the word youre looking for?

  • 1:37 things really kick off. I'm only saying this cause I don't know how to use youtube time codes and the link at that time.

  • yuuhhhhh ole miss!

    hatti tatti!

  • BRAVO MASTER!

  • great. Makes me want to learn harp.

  • i have been a keen harp player for a few years now and i love the fact that people like YOU take the time to give a very in depth and practicall way for people to play the blues. lloyd jersey c.i

  • dude I know you think your time with satan was great but you have surpassed him musically

  • I feel like if I can get this, Adam, I can get anything you throw at me....

  • That was very encouraging for me to hear you say that some of the contemporary players use the "open and close the jaw" technique..because i thought i invented that..lol!!..I couldn't figure out how to do the "coughing" technique i always heard about, like Sonny Boy Williams and others used...That little bump in my road caused me much frustration and i put the harp down for a spell because of it..but one day i stumbled on the jaw technique and my music did a "Quantum Leap" overnight! :-)

  • Hey Adam!

I've been sorta stuck in a rut for a while, and haven't been able to progress, but you've re-inspired me with some your slow blues techniques. I've always been fond of the slow "Hurtin" blues...Mississippi style!! You've taught me to slow down and "take my time" as you put it....which i didn't realize until i started to apply this principle, i really wasn't "taking my time." It's actually very liberating and opens up some new ideas. Thanks for all the lessons!

  • Hi Adam,

what seems to be vital while playing slow blues is to keep the vibrato on the long notes. Do you do that in your throat by "coughing" or is it better to do it with your midriff (hope thats the right word^^), like a singer?

again, credit to you - well done!

    cheers

    Olli (Hamburg)

  • Great question! On the draw notes, I create vibrato by doing a VERY gentle cough, inwardly--so gently that it's merely a soft oscillation of my larynx (Adam's apple). On blow notes, it's more like a soft cough. Some of the best contemporary players, such as Howard Levy, Carlos Del Junco, and Chris Michalek, open and close their jaw slightly in order to create vibrato. That works particuarly well on high blow notes. I'm trying to learn that technique.

  • Hey Adam.

I know you probably nailed it by the time i noticed this 2 month old comment, but i personally do prefer this 'jaw vibrato'. The thing is that you have to use your lower lip, when i vibrate my jaw i let my lower lip slightly close the hole, then it goes more quiet and when the lip comes off the hole- the other way. When you vibrate the jaw fast i get the vibrato sound using my lip. Correct?

    Best Of Luck,

    Patrikas (Lithuania)

  • i still have much to learn.

  • Just got myslef a Suzuki harmonica will be cheekin your site :D some nice blues

  • thank you!

  • i am officially in love with the harmonica.

    :)

    you are so goood!

i really would like to learn how to play, any advice??

  • Start by buying a decent instrument by a major manufacturer: Hohner, Seydel, Suzuki, Herring, half a dozen others. Key of C and/or D, then A, then F. Check out "quick start for beginners" at my website, Modern Blues Harmonica (dot) com.

  • I could listen to that jam all day long. Thank you for the lesson Prof!

  • Fantastic ! What type of harmonica do you use ???

  • Hohner Marine Band. I can't remember which key, but I believe it's a key of B-flat. Please visit my website, Modern Blues Harmonica, and see the FAQs page.

  • The thunder at 3:23 is fucking perfect. All blues should be played with the sound of rain in the background.

  • That's actually a college kid on spring break throwing empty bottles into a dumpster after a big party the night before.

  • also a very blues sound LOL

  • Even better, LOL!

  • idiot

  • You're nuts.

  • Hello Adam, firstly man id like to say thanx for making the effort to help people play im playing the harp a couple of years now and i was starting to lose interest but ur lessons which im just after discovering r after inspiring me again. Where do you get your inspiration..keep up the good work. .. JP

  • when did you start playing harmonica?

  • In 1974, when I was 16.

  • long time...

i'm 25 but you made me wanna start playing.

    cheers

  • Are those harps already set for a blues scale or its all about bending?

  • Ha! No, they're not set for a blues scale, although I am playing cross harp (google it), which makes some of the notes (the flat seventh) easy to get. But most of the important blues pitches--the flat fifth, the blue third, the flat seventh on the lower octave--I get by bending.

  • the best slow blues I have ever heard..

  • Well, i hoped, would be much easier (and it seems like, until i start blow in my armonica)

  • youre awesome. by the way, oxford's nice, I'm moving there next semester for law school

  • just great, bloke! just great!

  • Oh Yeah!

  • Tone to the bone!

I keep trying, but it's not easy to have such deep vibe.

see Teenage Werewolf' on my channel

  • I understand Adam is just wingin it right here and it sounds great. I Just started learning the Harmonica a couple weeks ago. I'm not very creative musicly so I was wondering if anyone could write up some tabs to each of the three little tunes he plays write here?

  • Look to the right of the video. I think there's a link in the extended video description. Tab for $1.

  • If you've only been playing a couple of weeks, I'd say keep your dollar. Most of these lessons (which are great!) don't seem to be for beginners. If you can play like that already- then my hats off to you!

  • Makes me want to play the harmonica. Sadly..I can't!

  • Why no lips? Give 'er a shot

  • Haha point taken. :P

  • Nice lesson Mr.Gussow need to ask how long did it really take you to be able to keep time like that?

  • Hey buddy. I love your tips. By the way...What do you think about the Hohner Piedmont Blues ???. Or please recommend me some good blues harmonica. Thanks. Alex from Brazil.

  • he playes marine band harmonicas

  • i have the piedmont blues set of a bunch of keys....they're great for beginning b/c they're super cheap and you can play in so many keys, but they really are shitty harps, im gonna buy two nicer ones now that i know what keys i use most jamming with people playin blues

  • I gotta learn how to play!

  • I've been watching all these videos over the past week and this slow blues style is my favorite. I just bought my very first Harmonica today to learn this. I love it.

  • Oke i really should get myself a bflat harp. It sounds great!! btw thank you for what you're doing. and keep it up!

  • can you recommend other slow blue classics like this? thank you.

p.s. couldn't download the tabs off tradebit, dunno if it's my computer or what.

  • mississippi! haha i live in hattiesburg

  • Thanks for providing us with the steps to move forward with the harp, I'm now working on playing harmonica in a metal band :D

  • Really! Dude that's sick! ^_^ What kinda/style of metal?

  • Right now we're in the beginning stages of writing songs, Theres a lot of different influences i can pick out when my drummer and guitarist work on stuff. So I can't really say for sure right now :D

  • Hows it going one month on?

  • he doesnt have the harmonica out yet

  • Hard to say lol, we all joined more serious projects got payed and departed from those projects for separate reasons and are looking to jam this week

  • no matter how hard i try my harmonica doesnt stop sounding like an accordion....

any recomendations to help work on that? haha

I tried different keys, iit doesnt make a difference.. :/

    help! thanks

  • I had that problem too. What seems to help me is getting your lips around the harp further than what you may be doing now. In addition to that, try to make your throat larger. Adam has some great single note practice lessons that have helped me with my tone too.

  • what do you mean by further? like, cover more holes or get your lips further over the top and bottom?

  • Get your lips further over the top and bottom. How long have you been playing? I found that working on single notes helped me. Some of Adam's earlier lessons cover that subject very well. I have been playing a little over a year and wasn't making much progress until I ran across Adam's lessons about 6 weeks ago. Thanks Adam !

  • lol ive been playing for maybe about 4 days? aha

i got my harmonicas as a Christmas gift, but i havent gotten around to playing them until now. anyways yeah ill try to do what you said :)

    thanks!

  • I love the video! It's greet! But I can't understand what you talk !

Could you get the sudtitle to the video, next?

  • I'm presuming from your name that you are Chinese. I'm afraid that I don't know any Chinese! But I would LOVE somebody to provide Chinese subtitles to this video, and all my other YouTube videos, and make sure that folks in China and Taiwan know who I am!

  • Yes. I'm a Chinese! I kwnew you from Tony Eyers' Hamnocia University (口琴草堂),There is an article on your 2D.A lot of people known you in China !If you provide English subtitles, perhaps I can understand you said!

However, just to hear, I can understand that!

    I'm sorry ! I'm listenning so bad !

  • when i listening a blues radio, there are a lot of blues songs from all times, where harp is played very little and often very simple even in fast tempo in back. But it is not a solo, for solo u need fill this simple riff with information i gues, and that is a reason why people want to learn how to play fast.

    i guess.

    very good lesson.
