The British government wastes billions every year on things we do not need. Now what does that £12 billion include? development aid, or just military expenditure? if just military then it includes assets that we will take with us when we leave, like new armoured vehicles etc.

We spend £30,000 a year per prisoner, 80,000 prisoners.. so that is 2.4 billion a year. 2.4 billion X 8 = about 20 billion.

Now i wonder how much money we could save if we.. executed murderers right after being found guilty. deported right away the 10% of prisoners who are not British. Reintroduced corporal punishment for petty criminals.. So instead of spending £600 a week to send a thief to prison.. lets give him 100 lashes.. that would be a MUCH better deterrence

Prison creates british Jobs instead of bleeding money on some foreign land and increasing the risk of terrorism here. Imagine how much we could reduce that prison population if the government spent that 12 billion on Jobs in the UK. 600 Vestas workers lost their job this week and they make wind turbines for electricity. The government has done nothing. It would cost 50 million to bail them out. I wonder how many unemployed peopel on the isle of wight will resort to crime when hard times hit.

We could reduce the prison population, if we did not take human rights of criminals so seriously. We could easily save 1.5 billion which is what Afghanistan has cost.

Also it depends on ur point of view if we have increased terrorism. Waging the war over there does help save the homeland in the long run. Pakistan and Afghanistan can not be a safe heaven for these extremists

Afghanistan has a point, we are there to help rebuild the country, strengthen a young democracy, help train its security forces so they can do the job themselves in the future. If we win, then it will be worth it.. but that requires dedication and political will.

As for prison, for something thats meant to keep us safer, their records of reforming people are a bloody disgrace. Like i said before.. 100 lashes for a thief will make them think twice, a week in a hotel like our prisons wont.

It requires leadership capable or organising strategy. The current strategy is simplistic and has resulted in a boom of heroin production and warlords and despots in power. SOme london probation officers have a case load of over 100 with an average of 33. Figure that out.

Probation officers here are over worked, because we are so liberal in our approach to dealing with criminals. The current strategy is clear, the problem is not enough resources have been provided to get the job done.

Obamas shift to the afghan war is a good development which is the reason we have seen recent spike in British deaths because coalition forces are taking on the taliban in Helmand province where as before we didnt have enough troops for that.
