I've done this before. As long as you're really calm and slow you can walk right up to a wasp/hornet/bee nest and grab it/blow it up without them really noticing you. If you're nervous and afraid and twitchy you're a lot more likely to get stung then if you stay calm until the last possible moment before slamming the jar up from under them so that when they do get pissed they have nowhere to go.

I did that once in a park at my last job, many years ago.

It was a nest about 5 inches in diameter, and I guess around 25-30 wasps on it.

I also extracted a couple big botfly maggots from a rat in that same park.
