it's all about the light, if they didn't dim the light we won't have that illusion... if you don't believe me watch again, they dim the light while the face is turning it's back...
I hardly believe what this video is telling us. True, why should we be considered 'mental' just because of seeing something as it is.
I saw hollow for the first few turns. Then I momentarily saw the mask protruding out but upon the next turn, it returned back to concave (hollow). I don't see the point in knowing this. Whether you're partially schizophrenic or not doesn't make any difference to our individual personalities (or atleast that is the case for people who watch this video).
actually, its scientifically proven that healthy minded people will see the mask facing toward them no matter which side is facing them, concave or convex. People with a mental illness will only see one side facing toward them and the other, convex or indented.
I didnt see the illusion at first cuz my brain is not stupid, it's a hollow mask but I see what his saying I have to make myself think differently of the transition
As the mask turns to the back you see concave, but as soon as the face starts to line up directly facing you, your mind will not accept that it looks hollow so you see convex. As it continues to turn and you start to see it in profile, the convex illusion dissipates and you see concave again.
I saw convex but when I stared hard at it, forcing myself to think hollow, I saw hollow. So basically, when you're just looking at it, you'd see concave...when you OBSERVE, you see hollow....so I don't believe this finding is really valid.
it keeps changing the direction it spins! i only say it as hollow the first 3 times i saw it! then after he said it didn't look hollow, now everyother time it looks convexing!
@luciferAir it was the opposite for me...i was so confused at first i didnt get the whole big deal just a hollow mask...then i concentrated watching it, and the back side finally popped out when it did i almost shit myself lol... but all in all its the opposite for me i have to concentrate to see the illusion lol weird

What amazes me about these studies is that researchers consider the "mentally ill' and "drugged" participants who are not fooled by this illusion as the defective ones. Clearly they are seeing reality, not the control group.
@rasputinslovechild1 the majority is the norm... for example, if everyone in the west have Aids, the few "lucky" enough will be the one considered defective, and scientists will create 1001 experiments to see what these few lacked that makes them unable to get aids
Same thing with culture.. just because middle east-eastern culture is different.. the west considers them weird, backward and unmodern..
@fanthor I agree with your point but being a progeny of both east and west parents I can confidently say the same is true of eastern cultures. People see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. If you show them different, right or wrong, it is you who are defective...
@rasputinslovechild1 the same lack of filters that make them immune to stuff like this is also the reason they don't know shitting out of windows is wrong though
@rasputinslovechild1 they prevent you from seeing what's important to understand and live in the world, instinctual, for instance I have autism and when I was younger I didn't make the connection between calling somebody fat and them being hurt because I didn't have filters to make me focus on that logical process

So apparently seeing a face melting out of the side of the first face and rotate in the opposite direction is more natural than seeing the inside of what is obviously a plastic mask.
Maybe if you'd never seen a mask before.
I've certainly never seen a magical double-sided bust.
If a baby saw this before he saw a person, would it see the mask as it actually is? And if it sees it as it actually is, when it grows up, will it remember what it really is or will its brain trick it like it does to the rest of us?
@portraitwords1 because normal people associate what they see with what they know. schizos cant do that properly. so when I (a hopefully non schizophrenic person) see the back side, my brain associates with the many images i have of normal sides, and goes "this is too much like it, it must also be normal", so i cant really tell which side is it
So I've been watching this over and over for about a half hour now... I still don't see how it's supposed to 'rotate in the opposite direction' or how the nose supposedly sticks out when it's inverted. Stupid thing.
@Blackcatwitchgirl100 This actually means that you are insane. I'm not kidding, only psychiatric patients can not see it, this is scientifically proven.
@eastcoastguitardude same here, i saw another on and i tried my best to make it look unhollow but it wouldnt work, same with this one, just that it worked, and i cant unsee it either....
If you really want to see the concave part of the face as concave, turn the monitor or the video upside down, then you will see it without any brain trickery.
Inside the MRI chamber a custom-made prism stereoscope was placed on the head coil that ensured that the left picture was projected to the left eye of the subject and the right picture to the right eye. The result was that the subject perceived a single 3D face in the middle of the display. Pseudoscopy, or binocular depth inversion, was induced by exchanging the pictures from the left and right sides. 2D faces were presented by showing the same picture to both eyes.
@nofxmike06 I really am sorry to hear that. Schizophrenia by itself isn't really a bad thing, but I'd get a doctor's opinion before something later in life sets off a more serious, latent problem, as occurs in some people. A simple question to help you gauge this is, do you sometimes honestly, in ever sense of belief, believe something to be true/false when more than one other person with the same information as you defends the opposite side? Obviously, don't answer to me, but to yourself.
i disliked it cause first i saw it hollow, then when i actually understand whats going i could never see it the same way :( its like the saying, "once you go black, you can never go back"
@ladeewishes Do tell. Seems more like a sociology experiment than a valid diagnostic tool. I find it odd people would, it seems, accept they have some affliction and see it as a uniqueness. Plus it's just dumb and even harmful to some who may be trying to come to terms that what they are experiencing is an illness, when they see the illusion.
@888archangel It is a diagnostic tool in a clinical setting. fMRIs are the proof; one trait of true schizophrenia is a complete dissociation between the frontal lobe and the visual cortex, thus mental flow is one directional and leaves much room for 'misperceptions' and hallucinations. Psychoactive drugs also temporarily causes this, so a really high or drunk person can fail to see illusions or seem to flip back and forth at lower doses. Without expensive equipment misdiagnosis is fairly easy.
@my1hampster Under laboratory conditions, by presenting each eye with a separate image of the same face, with each photo taken at slightly different angle towards the displayed face. To produce this effect, the following technique was used: stimulus pairs were projected via a NEC 2001 colour projector onto the window that separates the MRI chamber from the operating room. On this window white paper was placed that afforded a high resolution display for the stimulus pairs.
@my1hampster This is obviously not the same thing as what the experiment was, making this video useless. You have no sources, not theory of why this should be, are more than a little pretentious while talking about what you have no idea about, or even slightly grasp what schizophrenia is. Regardless form the experiment we don't if the people were psychotic, in remission, age gender etc. All these factors play a part, as well as their medications and a host of other factors.
@888archangel You're talking about psuedoscopic imaging, which is not the same thing. You're pretentious and I'm arrogant. Use context correctly; I'm a psychology major. I acknowledge YouTube is not a clinical setting and my methods are extreme: I'm giving insight firmly so that people might take it seriously enough to look into it. This is still valid enough to show disposition towards mental illnesses. And regardless of the methods used, the experiment is 100% valid with no outliers.
@my1hampster There is NO single diagnostic test for schizophrenia. After you're done with psy 101, I recommend an ethics class. Scientists are still unable to determine with visual Postmortem examination of the brain whether they suffered from schizophrenia or not. There is no known brain chemical imbalance in schizophrenia. There are far more ways to determine mental illness and far better ways than this absurd claim, that charlie Chaplin on youtube can. This has no reliability at all.
Found a way to see it correctly. When its coming around. just stare the bow tie until the mouth appears. Then stare the line between mouth and tie. Do not look straight into the eyes as this will probably bring back the illusion.
Important thing is to see the bow tie, eyes, nose and mouth moving in the same
I can go back and forth, I see both. I can also see it in several slices, where the nose inverts at 25%, goes to full face, then by 50% returns to being the inside of the mask. Depends on what I want to see.
I actually saw it as hallow the first time it went around. I had to sort of look at it to make it not hallow looking. Now my brain refuses to see it as it is though.
what does it mean if you can see the illusion but flip it back to concave within the same rotation? and it took me like five views to actually get what the heck was going on is there something wrong with me???????????????
How come you're schizophrenic if you see the mask for what it really is: hollow? A healthy brain sees the hollow part of the mask sticking out like another pale mask, but that's not really there, it's an illusion! So wouldn't that mean you're schizophrenic?
weird thing--at first i was not able to see the illusion! i saw the concave, hollow inside of the mask. however, now that i see the illusion, it's hard for me to see it in the way i was before...
@lanegwyn lol means ur schizophrenic. Im reading about schiz right now and I remember a guy telling me if I say it concave I was schizophrenic. So I came back to look at it again. I see it the way u do. How could you not realize the illusion after seeing it a couple times?

@my1hampster I don't take drugs.
nofxmike06 1 year ago
@nofxmike06 I really am sorry to hear that. Schizophrenia by itself isn't really a bad thing, but I'd get a doctor's opinion before something later in life sets off a more serious, latent problem, as occurs in some people. A simple question to help you gauge this is, do you sometimes honestly, in ever sense of belief, believe something to be true/false when more than one other person with the same information as you defends the opposite side? Obviously, don't answer to me, but to yourself.

@my1hampster
Yes, I honestly am not in tune with others opinions, and I am able to see the illusion. But maybe just because people are idiots :D
alienhated 1 year ago
@alienhated Me too. But that's opinions. It's more about observing a factual event.
my1hampster 1 year ago
@my1hampster This is absurd. I see the illusion. I'm schizophrenic. This is junk.
888archangel 1 year ago
@888archangel You're probably misdiagnosed, which happens a lot by psychologists. You're probably shizotypal.
my1hampster 1 year ago
i disliked it cause first i saw it hollow, then when i actually understand whats going i could never see it the same way :( its like the saying, "once you go black, you can never go back"

I saw this in my Sociology class I thought it was pretty intersting!
ladeewishes 1 year ago
@ladeewishes Do tell. Seems more like a sociology experiment than a valid diagnostic tool. I find it odd people would, it seems, accept they have some affliction and see it as a uniqueness. Plus it's just dumb and even harmful to some who may be trying to come to terms that what they are experiencing is an illness, when they see the illusion.
888archangel 1 year ago
@888archangel It is a diagnostic tool in a clinical setting. fMRIs are the proof; one trait of true schizophrenia is a complete dissociation between the frontal lobe and the visual cortex, thus mental flow is one directional and leaves much room for 'misperceptions' and hallucinations. Psychoactive drugs also temporarily causes this, so a really high or drunk person can fail to see illusions or seem to flip back and forth at lower doses. Without expensive equipment misdiagnosis is fairly easy.
my1hampster 1 year ago
@my1hampster Under laboratory conditions, by presenting each eye with a separate image of the same face, with each photo taken at slightly different angle towards the displayed face. To produce this effect, the following technique was used: stimulus pairs were projected via a NEC 2001 colour projector onto the window that separates the MRI chamber from the operating room. On this window white paper was placed that afforded a high resolution display for the stimulus pairs.
888archangel 1 year ago
@my1hampster This is obviously not the same thing as what the experiment was, making this video useless. You have no sources, not theory of why this should be, are more than a little pretentious while talking about what you have no idea about, or even slightly grasp what schizophrenia is. Regardless form the experiment we don't if the people were psychotic, in remission, age gender etc. All these factors play a part, as well as their medications and a host of other factors.
888archangel 1 year ago
@888archangel You're talking about psuedoscopic imaging, which is not the same thing. You're pretentious and I'm arrogant. Use context correctly; I'm a psychology major. I acknowledge YouTube is not a clinical setting and my methods are extreme: I'm giving insight firmly so that people might take it seriously enough to look into it. This is still valid enough to show disposition towards mental illnesses. And regardless of the methods used, the experiment is 100% valid with no outliers.

@my1hampster derrrrrrrrrrrr
susasamouri 11 months ago

Important thing is to see the bow tie, eyes, nose and mouth moving in the same
direction.
wolfcastle7 1 year ago
I can go back and forth, I see both. I can also see it in several slices, where the nose inverts at 25%, goes to full face, then by 50% returns to being the inside of the mask. Depends on what I want to see.
akotlar 1 year ago
I actually saw it as hallow the first time it went around. I had to sort of look at it to make it not hallow looking. Now my brain refuses to see it as it is though.

what does it mean if you can see the illusion but flip it back to concave within the same rotation? and it took me like five views to actually get what the heck was going on is there something wrong with me???????????????
calebk72 1 year ago
God, it took me forEVER to figure out what the hell this guy was talking about!
I just saw the mask as it was - concave!
I practically squinted my eyes to figure out it was supposed to look like another face...
xXIchigoMizukiXx 1 year ago
What if you're somewhere along the spectrum of schizophrenia... like schizotypical or schizoaffective? What do you see in the back of the mask then?
lanegwyn 1 year ago
WOW YOU AR ASOME (IS THIS YOUR VID?) COOL!
UchihaSasukeMat 1 year ago
How come you're schizophrenic if you see the mask for what it really is: hollow? A healthy brain sees the hollow part of the mask sticking out like another pale mask, but that's not really there, it's an illusion! So wouldn't that mean you're schizophrenic?

Am I the only one that sees the optical illusion go away when the mask is almost sideways?

lanegwyn 1 year ago
@lanegwyn lol means ur schizophrenic. Im reading about schiz right now and I remember a guy telling me if I say it concave I was schizophrenic. So I came back to look at it again. I see it the way u do. How could you not realize the illusion after seeing it a couple times?
