At 2.58 when trying to have him say the 2nd letter you can clearly see Derren's right had forming a circle with the thumb and forefinger. It's all about influence. He is a master at this.

Knowing what little I know about mentalism and stage magic, I suspect that he did those things only to give people who analyze the video for clues the false impression that he has implanted the word in his mind. I think it is far more likely that the word was somehow written on the painting from behind during the trick. Still, fascinating stuff. :)

I know how he did it! When the where looking at the pictures at the wall, he brought Simon Gowell into hypnosis! Then he explained that he will think of a word with four letters and its not a "RUDE" word.

RUDE was the codeword!!! it has got 4 letters! and after simon found out the first to letters "RO" he stopped and let him think about the word! Simon thought about the word "RUDE" which sounds nearly equal to "ROAD" and he remembered that it was not and rude word! So he picked the word "ROAD"
