I've been stuck on Big Thunder at DL before; it was 2 years ago and we were in the earthquake/cave-in mine shaft. We had to get off and we were led to the Rainbow Caverns room. It was neat that both were right next to each other. That said, I'd LOVE to be stuck on this ride for awhile. I could sing Grim Grinning Ghosts all day...Hmmm...put me near the British couple or the Opera Singers :)
i love how even when there's technical difficulty, the ride operators stay in character. how bad would it be if someone were with their kid who was terrified of the ride and they stopped right in front of a ghost that kept popping out. i hated that ride when i first went on it ( i was really little) but i want to try going on again.

They didn't turn on the lights though, so we all got out our phones and one of us even had a flashlight. The freaking head thing kept speaking and eventually the ride started up again, but they let us go again because we got stuck for so long.

whats funny is alot of ppls think they are getting stuck but most of the time they are not if your there for more then 10-15 mins yes your stuck if its any less its not that your getting stuck its that someone handicaped is getting on the ride i would know cause one of my friends is handicaped and they stopped the ride for her to get on and off (remeber the ride is a continuous ride it does not stop so they stop it for ppls who need it to stop)
Last time I was there, I got stuck right at the part with the candle holder is floating in the hallway. IT WAS SO FREAKY!! Mainly because there is a knight statue right there that kept moving- because it wasn't shut off. And behind us was just plain BLACK! I was with my sister and we decided to call our parents who were somewhere else in the park. I ended up calling my friend too, who was in English that day. @592220 Yeah, that happens when a wheelchair accessible person (not necessarily a "fat bastard") needs to embark or disembark the ride because the conveyor belt normally doesn't stop.
However, usually the service lights don't go on when that happens, which means something else may have been going on.

it's impossible to have been stuck on the ride for 2 hours. after a certain amount of time (likely less than 10 minutes) they will evacuate if necessary. and if the ride was stopped for as long as you claim, an evacuation would have undoubtedly been necessary,
We got stuck in the Haunted Mansion one time before the ball room area, right in the creepy forest for about 10 minutes and there were no service lights. It was almost completely dark except for the light over the emergency exit. a few feet away.
I remember when I was really young, sometime in 1995, I went on this ride for the first time, and I was really scared and I think I cried at the beginning; it all seemed so real and menacing. Then around the part with the singing statues, just like in this video, the ride stalled and the lights went on and music muted. At that point I thought "oh wth you're not scary anymore...hooray!" but my baby brother was even more scared because he thought were stuck with ghosts for life.
I've heard that this cemetery was the inspiration for the cemetery in the film "the Haunted Mansion" with Eddie Murphy (Dr Doolittle). Even the heads were singing it!

I got stuck in the ballroom scene once in Disney World. We sat there for twenty minutes, not moving, lights off, all the effects still on and everything. We got really familiar with every part of that room, that's for sure.
Finally, the sound effects and music went off, but the ghosts were still on and the lights stayed off. We began to get announcements like the one in this video. After about ten or so minutes of that, the lights came on and cast members came by to let us out.
It sounds like the reason you were detained was that the whole mechanism got stuck on repeat - which can happen in the older animatronics when they wear down - Or if someone spills something on them.
I would really like to get stuck in the ballroom scene of this ride. I think I'd be too scared for being trapped in most of the other scenes for more than a minute or two. I'm such a scaredy cat. \\OoO//

all the omnimovers go at the same pace and are bolted into a giant chain with servo motors under each one and about 17 motors pushing the chain to make sure they can constantly get them moving at a steady pace and get guests in and out with as short of a line inside as possibe
At least they dropped the volume on the jumping ghouls (and there are fewer). When I was a kid, even though I loved the ride, I dreaded being in that part when the ride got stuck and those ghouls would jump up in front of MY Doom Buggy and scream. They lowered the volume on the jumpers in the late 70s or early 80s due to complaints.
Oh yeah, I was just at Disneyland about 5 hours ago. My 2 year old LOVES the Haunted Mansion No paternity test needed here, that's MY Boy!
I worked there for years and was a trainer. You, as a "servant", are never to turn on the work lights unless told to do so by managment or there is a emergency and need to evacuate the building.
@silverthehedgielover Nope :) They are using the same effect they have used since the 60's. Although they have upgraded the projectors a few times. The noises you are hearing are probably the other mechanical items in the ride. However, in Disney World and Disneyland Paris, they upgraded the singing busts with new lighting effects The faces are the same as before, but they look much more realistic. Cool Stuff.
As for the The holidays meaning oct thru jan at Disneyland end second week of January. The park by then goes into regular off season mode.

well i see why it keeps going out its a very old ride i wouldnt tell disney to take away the spooks but i they should refresh them so they can look more new and get people scared

This ride when I waS little i was terrified I would make every excuse to not go on lol but now im older and understand its all fake this ride is really cool i love it but the part i would HATE to be stuck in is the part when your going down the hallway with the arms pushing on the doors omg i HATE that part lol

it's impossible to have been stuck on the ride for 2 hours. after a certain amount of time (likely less than 10 minutes) they will evacuate if necessary. and if the ride was stopped for as long as you claim, an evacuation would have undoubtedly been necessary,

We got stuck in the Haunted Mansion one time before the ball room area, right in the creepy forest for about 10 minutes and there were no service lights. It was almost completely dark except for the light over the emergency exit. a few feet away.

I remember when I was really young, sometime in 1995, I went on this ride for the first time, and I was really scared and I think I cried at the beginning; it all seemed so real and menacing. Then around the part with the singing statues, just like in this video, the ride stalled and the lights went on and music muted. At that point I thought "oh wth you're not scary anymore...hooray!" but my baby brother was even more scared because he thought were stuck with ghosts for life.

I've heard that this cemetery was the inspiration for the cemetery in the film "the Haunted Mansion" with Eddie Murphy (Dr Doolittle). Even the heads were singing it!

I got stuck in the ballroom scene once in Disney World. We sat there for twenty minutes, not moving, lights off, all the effects still on and everything. We got really familiar with every part of that room, that's for sure.
Finally, the sound effects and music went off, but the ghosts were still on and the lights stayed off. We began to get announcements like the one in this video. After about ten or so minutes of that, the lights came on and cast members came by to let us out.

It sounds like the reason you were detained was that the whole mechanism got stuck on repeat - which can happen in the older animatronics when they wear down - Or if someone spills something on them.

all the omnimovers go at the same pace and are bolted into a giant chain with servo motors under each one and about 17 motors pushing the chain to make sure they can constantly get them moving at a steady pace and get guests in and out with as short of a line inside as possibe

At least they dropped the volume on the jumping ghouls (and there are fewer). When I was a kid, even though I loved the ride, I dreaded being in that part when the ride got stuck and those ghouls would jump up in front of MY Doom Buggy and scream. They lowered the volume on the jumpers in the late 70s or early 80s due to complaints.
Oh yeah, I was just at Disneyland about 5 hours ago. My 2 year old LOVES the Haunted Mansion No paternity test needed here, that's MY Boy!

I was on Haunted Mansion on 3/30/10 and it stopped while I was in the cemetary. The lights didn't come on though.

I worked there for years and was a trainer. You, as a "servant", are never to turn on the work lights unless told to do so by managment or there is a emergency and need to evacuate the building.

@silverthehedgielover Nope :) They are using the same effect they have used since the 60's. Although they have upgraded the projectors a few times. The noises you are hearing are probably the other mechanical items in the ride. However, in Disney World and Disneyland Paris, they upgraded the singing busts with new lighting effects The faces are the same as before, but they look much more realistic. Cool Stuff.
