  • Even at the tender age of 11 in the day, I knew this film was crap.

  • rip siskel you were a far better critic than ebert ever will be

  • 2 great actors horrible movie, but if you're a kid you'll enjoy it

  • A fair review. I love the games and I wish they'd been more literal in translating the games. I agree with Roger, the error was on the conceptual level.

  • I like how the top 2 comments contradict eachother

  • it's pretty bad when your movie can't match the high tech excitement of an 8-bit video game

  • @Superfreaxx

Spending cash like that is the reason the economy is in the shitter.

  • This seriously may have been the worst idea for a movie and just the worst movie ever made.

  • Wow, Siskel knows quite a lot about video games.

  • NOT PRONOUNCED MARRY-O!

  • I like the Super Mario Bros. movie.

  • @watertommyz What are you butt-hurt about; Ebert's comments about Ryan Dunn or his stance on video games as an art form?

  • @Tron239

Sorry, but some people do in fact deserve to die. Critics are a waste of money and humanity. Opinions should never be payed for...and I won't be paying for yours.

  • @watertommyz

I beg to differ. Its pretty sad that you wish for someone to die. Yes, it is easy to criticize a film, but it takes a lot of skill and experience to do it right, and then to deliver it in a way that is insightful and entertaining. Ebert is one of a handful of critics left that can still pull it off. I may not agree with all of his reviews, but i would pay a lot of cash just to have a conversation with him about film.

  • bob-omb!

  • Plummer-alert!!!!

  • Monkey!

  • Seems like Siskel would have disagreed with Ebert's opinion regarding video games as an art form the way he talks about video games at 1:19

Plus this movie was HORRIBLE, I don't think the film-makers even played the video game. I don't think Mario Bros. was meant to be turned into a movie, it would be incredibly weird but probably sticking to the feel and aesthetic of the original games would have been better than this piece of crap.

  • @watertommyz You're. An. Idiot.

  • @watertommyz where's the irony in a film critic getting throat cancer? i think the term you were looking for was "poetic justice"; but even that would be a stretch because critiquing a film has nothing to do with using your throat. it's also quite sad that you have such a hostile attitude towards them. i suggest you read a dictionary before making such asinine comments on youtube. 3 syllable words aren't your forte.

  • super mary-oh brothers!

  • I've changed sides. I now can't stand Ebert. I'm cool

  • hahah merio

  • @thatmovieguy777 lol...I was like Merio? what the...

  • R.I.P Dennis Hopper.

  • how I feel about this movie to quote lisa from the simpsons: this book about bart came out awful quick and it's not even about him, inside it's mainly about Ross Perot and the last two chapters are excerpts from the Oliver North trial

  • Who's Mary-O?

  • For the record! I like this movie! BAM! lol

  • Two girls and a cup was less disgusting than this movie

  • What do they expect?

Little fat boys making silly sounds in a happy sunshine world jumping on 1 feet tall mushrooms?

    They did a good job

    Take that!!!

  • Absolute crap...stop making video games into movies. This one should've taught us a lesson from the beginning.

  • I don't get the hate for this movie. My two little brothers and I watched this movie so many times when we were kids. I'm 26 now and saw it recently and it was still awesome. They had to invent things as they went due to script re writes but some movies are like that. Scream 3 had to do that.

  • They should remake the movie and have Charels Martinae (not sure if I spelled that right) to play mario.

  • @mariomo2000 I'd love a remake but I loved the original. Watched it tons of times with my brothers.

  • And this movie...Take it away Hopper

    Dennis Hopper:

    "Bob-Ombed!"

  • While I'm still disappointed a little as how the movie got changed I understood tyhen and now that what works in a video game doesn't always work. If you look at this movie as based on super mario brothers you can still have fun. I loved the song. and that actors were good but Cpt lou is the best mario. But yea this movie was good in the theater and is fun on video. It ends with a sequel teaser i would watch it lol

  • Hood God! Can Ebert get more ugly? Oh wait,,,,

  • haha! what age group was it made for? it was meant for more than one generation of people, makes me question what generation was siskel & ebert's reviews made for!?!

  • So many shitty movies , thx to the laws of the universe we won't have enough time to watch'em all. Thank You Universe!

  • This is an awesome film! One of my favorite childhood films.

  • @Somatunes YEY!!! I don't here enough people praise this movie! It really was awesome.

  • I'll be honest, I actually liked this movie as a kid. But, I'll be honest, pretty much ANY movie for kids, these guys always picked on, look what they said about Jumanji. They said nothing happened and there was no story. Really? No story? They must've gotten that confused with Bug or Trolls 2, THOSE are horrible movies. Super Mario Bros looks like an Oscar contender in comparison to those abominations. Also, didn't Ebert say he liked Beavis & Butthead Do America?

  • One of the wors movies I have ever seen. I could barley get through it when I was younger.

  • When Luigi sees Daisy being kidnapped, He just Stands there Saying "U BETTER NOT HURT HER!"

  • mary oh bros.? My god.

  • Did they not watch the movie? The one where they clearly say "MAH-REE-OH" numerous times?

  • everyone in england says maryoh :/

  • I should have a bad video game movie night, and watch this along with the double dragon movie that came out.

  • Playing videogames... with quarters?! I am clearly too young

  • What a sutpid movie!

  • Wow, they actually went easy on this vomit pile.

  • Siskels face at 2:01 is LOL!

  • @The3ninjakids You mean Ebert.

  • @Deavi783 no siskel because isnt siskel the old guy?

  • @The3ninjakids You mean Ebert?

  • @Petterindanckwardt NO IT'S SISKEL! THE OLD FART IS SISKEL!

  • @The3ninjakids no man. the "old fart" is ebert and and the other guy is siskel, look it up.

  • @pao126 i thought siskel was the old fart cuz it changes to ebert and roper!

  • @The3ninjakids ironically, siskel, the younger one, died, from complications on a surgery he did to remove a brain tumor. ebert is alive and still reviewing movies on his blog.

  • Mary-Oh? Why not? Ebert says Pokemans

  • Why does Siskel say "Mer-ee-yo" instead of Mario?

  • This movie is so wacky it's good! It has great musical themes. I remember it was my favorite movie...when I was five.

  • And as far as adaptions of video games go, the movies from the Pokemon anime seem to be the most faithful to the source material out of the ones that I've seen at least, but maybe those games are easier to work with than Mario.

  • Sometimes I think this movie would be the greatest example that video game characters like Mario don't work as movies with deep storylines and only work as games. Mario was always more about the gameplay than the story, and whatever plots the games have are at the very least simplistic and take a back seat in favor of gameplay. I mean if you think about the arcade games back in the 80's, was anyone ever thinking about what the story was while playing Pac-Man?

  • you had to be on shrooms to see any resemblance between the worlds and characters in the movie and the game.

  • I couldn't even sit through to the end, I dont think it needed to be more technological, just more consistant with the video game Mario world that the fans love, it may come out cartoony in this way, but it would of made a better movie then seeing a dull city like in the film... plus a good story would of been nice too, Lugi falling for Daisy? come on!

  • This movie was awful, but it was awful in such a way that it's completely enjoyable.

And the DeVo rays were spray-painted Super Scopes. HOW IS THAT NOT AWESOME?!

  • super mary-o brothers? goobahs? GET IT RIGHT SISKEL!!!!!

  • he dosent know how 2 say mario lol

  • Super Ricky - Oh Brothers

  • This was awful but good to watch

  • i hate mary-o but i love mario

  • This movie is based off the Super Mario games the same way a piece of cardboard in the shape of a piece of bread is based off bread.

Yeah they look kind of the same, but you would look like an idiot trying to say that the cardboard is a perfect representation.

  • @jackedsamurai772 This movie looks NOTHING like the game though...

  • such a bad movie!!

  • That line from Siskel is great

"Our next movie is a film version of a popular video game. Its called Super Mario Bros and it doesn't work at all"

  • Want to see a good video game movie? watch Scott Pilgrim. It's not nased directly on a video game, but it revolves around them

  • @ECL28E It just has a lot of references to video games, like the SP comics did.

  • MONKEY!!

  • @RUnerdy BOB-OMB!!

  • If you're going to review a movie, at least frigging pronounce the main character's name right!

  • @SuaveTito Two words: Chicago accent.

  • @VeeloxPhader I live in Chicago western suburbs and NO ONE says "Mary-o".

  • My grilfriend (who loves Mario but hadn't heard of this movie) thought I was making it up.

    I told her that

    - Mario brothers don't jump, instead they have compressed air boots.

    - Koopa is a mob boss

    - The goomba's are gangsters.

    - They don't have fire flowers, they have flame flowers

    - Yoshi is like a raptor or something

It sounds like a bad joke.

  • Screw you guys! I still love the movie!!!

  • 1:01 - :08 Gomba's are mushrooms that betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom.

  • Batman Returns is fucking Citizen Kane compared to this.

Not that it isn't a great movie to begin with...

  • The second you see the cartoon intro, you knew it had ultimate fail written all over it. I remember watching it as a kid and thinking "WTF have they done?!"

  • This movie is right up there with "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", where you're like, "What the fuck does this have to do with the source material?" This movie has all the character's names, but the locations and visuals are all wrong.

  • Why does the Mushroom Kingdom look like a shitty version of the Blade Runner set?

  • the movie should have just bee animated

  • @MatthewLedZepfan Still would have sucked.

  • You know who would've made a great Mario & Luigi? Captain Lou Albano & Danny Wells.

  • @supergamerbros like in the Super Show?

  • the funny thing is that they got Good actors to play Mario & Luigi

  • @coopercastille Yea..two non italian actors.

  • The worst thing about this movie is that Bob Hoskins was perfectly cast, but the screenplay seemed to be a Fantasy-based "Blade Runner" rip-off with the occasional video game reference thrown in.

Imagine what Bob Hoskins could have done with a decent screenplay and a good director (not to mention a decent co-star. I like J.L., but he's totally unsuitable for Luigi).

  • @Mrx2848

The problem with this film lay in the source material. The super mario bros games dont have much story or character development which forced the filmmakers into doing their own interpretation of what was already and in doing so they departed a great distance from the mythos of the series. While Bob Hoskins undoubtably makes a pitch perfect mario, everything else in the game is just unfilmmable as this movie demonstrates.

  • im glad siskel even as a none gamer realises that the game must be 1000 times better than the film

  • I saw this movie before I played the game.

  • i hate the way siskel says mario...

  • Infotech??

  • I liked that movie, it was like a modern(?) interpretation of the Mario world/story/universe. But i can see why people are disappointed with it.

  • dammit it bugged me to no end the way Siskel kept saying Mario wrong ....

  • When i saw that this movie was made on Nintendo power in 2002, I was ecstatic and REALLY wanted to see it. My dad rented it for me and i watched it. I was wondering...uh, what is this? This isn't Mario, and THAT is not Luigi!

  • Bob Hoskins was a great choice for Mario but if the filmmakers even tried to reflect the wonderous fantasy world fun in the super mario games they would of had a much better film.. At one time Danny Devito and Tony Danza would have made a great Mario and Luigi.

  • When I was younger I loved this movie because it was weird and dark. We rented it last year and I loved it because it was weird and dark and inexplicably incomprehensible. And nowadays I think that it's Elizabeth Banks as Daisy...

  • RIP Dennis Hopper

  • I liked it for some reason as a kid...but the film always reminded me of The Wiz....haha

  • Wait... Wait one minute.... Mariyo brothers? I hate when people pronounce it that way

  • @JTC545 well thats the italian way of saying

  • @JTC545 on goanimate voices they pronounce it that way

  • @JTC545 This movie doesn't deserve to have its title pronounced correctly.

But when talking about the game itself, then yes.

  • I dunno, I kinda dig this movie, it's a fun B-Movie.

  • Siskel sounds like he's saying Merio instead of Mario

  • The funny thing is they actually got really good actors to play Mario and Luigi.

  • The horror...The horror...

  • These critics went kind of easy on this film. Still, Siskel was right--this movie didn't even TRY to be anything like the video game. When I heard about this film, I wondered why they were making a movie based on this video game at all and how they were going to make it work. This movie looks more like a director lost a bet with his drinking buddies.

  • man i thought they were gonna be brutal with this review like most people are.

    This movie sucks

  • what the fuck is dennis hopper doing here?

  • My favorite evaluation of this film came from Bob Hoskins himself. Referred to the two directors as "fuckin' idiots," if I recall. How so many good actors could be suckered into a film like this is startling.

  • maryo haha

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best of the worst! It's a very bad movie (and almost nothing at all like the game) but it's never boring, immensly entertaining for enthusiasts of trash cinema :D

  • I hated this movie as a kid and I loathe it as an adult. I remember being so hyped for this one. During the summer of 1993, there were two films that pinged my radar strongly, Jurassic Park was the first one and this film was a close second. I'd played the game religiously like everyone else my age and when I heard there was a movie, it was like hearing about the second coming of Christ. I couldn't wait. All it took was 90 minutes to dash my hopes of a good Mario Bros. movie. Agree w/S&E.

  • @redbandmagic Same with Kazaam.

  • Kazaam is just a bad idea to begin with... not sure how that would ever be a good movie.

  • The curse and gift of adulthood.

Movies you loved as a kid,get ruined when you reach a good age and realise

    "Shit, that was lame".

  • My review:

    Bad movie is bad

  • Mario was my childhood. Such a shame they made such an utterly shitty film out of it.

  • Is this movie bad in an entertaining way? Or bad in a boring way?

  • @Mackened Definitely entertaining in a bad way.

  • Just saw that movie again last Friday. Still awesome! Makes me laugh all the time! What's great about it is that it doesn't take itself seriously. It's just silly and entertaining! Great movie! Really!

  • i liked it as i was a kid, it was quite a funny movie

  • Although i really dont like the movie in one sense, it truly is a gem...

its just so weird and makes absolutely no sense sometimes. but i guess thats what you get for trying to turn a game like mario into a movie...

  • I'd like to think that a great Mario Bros. movie is a possibility. You'd have to marry the work of Miyazaki with the work of George Lucas and throw in a dash of Zucker & Abrams to make it work.

  • @redbandmagic Old George Lucas though, not new Lucas. I think it could be a pretty cool movie, but it would have to ditch the video game aspect I think. Either that or go the opposite route and make it completely campy and gimmicky.

  • You'd portray the Mario world as tangibly as the N64 and GameCube entries did. You'd make going to Mushroom Land as magical an experience as going to the Land of Oz. In fact, The Wizard of Oz would be the perfect template for the perfect Mario Bros. film.

  • @redbandmagic While Bob Hoskins was perfectly cast as Mario, if there is any way to make a Super Mario Brothers movie, it has to be either fully animated or done with Performance Capture. The restrictions of live-action physics and settings just cannot capture the magic of the Mushroom Kingdom. Maybe Robert Zemeckis could produce a Mo-Cap Mario movie done a 'la "Monster House". Even better, he worked with Bob Hoskins in "A Christmas Carol", so maybe he coud get him to reprise the role.

  • The perfect Mario Bros. movie would actually be a cross between Legend by Ridley Scott and The Wizard of Oz.

  • Definately or have someone as odd as Spike Jonze, Charlie Kaufman, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton or even David Lynch that can do fantasy & have it make some sort of sense!

  • Agreed!

  • Roger Ebert Rocks!

  • How the fuck did Roland Joffe end up directing this trash? And why didn't Luigi have a moustache?

  • I liked it.

  • super mary-o brothers?

  • saying it as "a" instead of "ar" in mario is just the european pronunciation

  • @phxsns1

Lol, I knew a Spanish girl who pronounced it Mary-O.

  • @phxsns1

It's how a lot of folks pronounce the name. Not sure if it's correct or not, but it's quite common in some areas.

  • @phxsns1 mmm... mary-o...

  • @phxsns1 That's how people thought it was pronounced. Even Bowser's actor in the cartoon.

  • @raddaluigi

I thought it was just how a lot of Americans pronounce it. Like when you guys say "Tomaytoes" or "Anartica"

Most people, including the character Mario, pronounce it as "Mar-rio"

  • @phxsns1 lol as soon as he said that I thought "what the fuck?", scrolled down half an inch, and started cracking up seeing your comment

  • @phxsns1 That's how a lot of people used to pronounce it for some reason.

  • @phxsns1 you bet your ass super mary-o brothers!

  • I like how he's so positive on video games

  • What a positive thing to say, NegativeNick. ♥ :D

  • It was an amusing movie. The goombas were cool, Dennis Hopper was funny, that old lady with the ray gun was hilarious, and the Bob-omb cameo was AWESOME.

  • Even though this was a bad film but I still like watching it. All though I really don't think it should have been called Mario Bros I think it would have been a lot better if it were just a movie on it's own.

  • "B-bomb!"

  • i feel dirty just looking at snippets

  • this movie is terrible, worst movies i ever seen

  • I know! The advertisement for the film was so awesome, but we got hyped, and the rest of the film was rhino dung.

  • I honestly don't think its that bad a movie, its just not a very well thought out one

  • this movie is hilarious

  • I saw this movie as a kid and to be fair, i liked it, because it made me laugh. Remember the "Mario Mario" scene for example. I think this movie appeals to the kids, fans of super mario games on the nintendo, not to adult audience. It is just not worth analysing this movie to much, its just a comedy for kids

  • You know there are such things as good Children films that everybody likes

    Like the Pixar films

This crap when I was a kid, and its crap now

Why give every kid film a pass?

  • Bacause there are bunch of moments that make kids laugh. Its a comedy and its hilarious , i didnt take this movie seriously back then. I just dont get it why peple hate this movie so much

  • Bu you will agree Pixar is better then this video game movie crap

  • Better technically, but the stories and characters are equally crap.

  • You dont understand film, Wall-E had an interesting story-telling by not having diagolue half the film. SMB is a lazy cookie cutter film.

  • The toys are so much cooler than the movie
