To thine own self be true. Do not judge yourself so harshly as you feel others might. Love people and they will love you in return. If they do not, it is their great loss.
Strive for progress, not perfection.I stand with you in the fight for social justice.
I know what you mean, but if you step back, you can see that Racism exists within the gay community. In seeking equality, we've overlooked division of gays by race. As a wealthy gay-mixed (Black/White/NatAm)- jew, I've grown up in white society, rejected by black society since youth. You shouldn't feel like you have to choose, fight for universal equality if you're going to fight for anything. Take the broader stroke. We need not compartmentalise our fight for justice, it makes the point moot.
YOU SHOULD GO FOR BOTH!!!! As a queer person of color, you can do both, and it would be amazing if you did both. You are not only latino; you are not only queer. As a queer person of color, you are invested in the wellbeing of BOTH of your communities and if you want to protect them, you can be a gay rights activist and an anti racist latino rights activist. I hope you stop feeling you have to choose 1 side because i think it would be cool if you could fight for social justice 4 every1.
Hey Vincent search here on youtube: "Elaine Brown" "New Age Racism" this is really a great lecture and @1:24.15 a young lady during the q&a asks a question how to balance Chicano/gay activism in her private life. I thought you might interest you.
Why can't there be an overlap, when you fight for La Rasa, why can't you fight for acceptance of gays within the Latino community. I think this is the mistake Gays made during the equal rights movement, we fought for equal rights, from within the closet, so Black America is unaware of the huge contribution, the gay community played it winning desegregation, equal rights, etc. How willour own ethnic groups & other groups be aware, if we repeat the past, and fight from within the closet?
There are Gay groups in virtually every ethnic community. I just read recently about some out viet Namese (sp?) who were educating their community, as to the struggles their Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans family and friends go through, and to approach homosexuality with an open mind. What your talking about is nothing new, as many people who are mixed, have felt torn between two ethnicities. So being torn between one's culture, and the gay community, is more common than you think.
Get this: Im a white phillipino homosexual polytheistic pagan who believes in astrotheism and to top it off, a south paw for that "extra kick." But you can choose to live like a victim or develop a "I don't give a fuck" attitude and just live life.
@AstroMen2911 Live like a victim? Wow. Get over your blindness and silly barriers. You do NOT know Tenor Cervantes' struggle. Part of 'living life' is to care about what happens to people in life, not to have a 'i don't give a fuck' attitude. Jesus of Nazareth, people like you, who try to size up their identities with people of colour, get on my NERVES.
You have to take into consideration, your schedule, your current responsibilities, & your resources in order to judge what you can strive for. If your going to college and working, it leaves little time for being an activist. However, it can still be done by, finding organizations that already exist that can support your desire for activism. There are Gay Latino organizations out there, &some standard Latin organizations support the Gay Latin Community. Find out more at your gay community center
Don't burn yourself out trying to be the perfect anything, no one is perfect. I have met some Christians who let their faith burden them in this way, they obsess about the smallest thing they don't do right, while ignoring all the good things they do. These folks will hate themselves for not praying enough, not going to church enough, etc Using some idealized notion of what a good Christian, Gay Person, Immigrant, etc will set you up to fail due to an unobtainable standard which no one could do
There is a crossroads, countless gay couples struggle with immigrants rights, when due to laws, one is forced to go back to their home country. Either the couple moves to the foreign country, they break up, defy the law. Strait couples don't have this issue as, they can marry their partner. So, by taking up this aspect of how this aspect of the immigration law is unjust, you can serve both communities at once.
@whitecubguy13 This is a big oversimplification. Not all male-female couples can marry. If one or both persons in the relationship are disabled, there are laws that can also prevent marriage for them/us. There really is no substitute for simply being a social justice activist. It is the only way that you can truly address the underlying problems that manifest as different forms of bigotry like racism, agism, ablism, sexism.
wow you have opened a can of worms. Those of us born in the US can not imagine the hell someone must live in to risk their freedom and lives not to mention being treated with mistrust to come to another cournty. The answer is not to open our borders but to push the Mexican government to serve their people. There is no reason that Mexico can not be as rich as the US but if their people keep leaving and not staying and fighting it can not change.
Yes, Mexico can be but you are correct that would be a long discussion and with only 500 characters we could not accomplish it.
You should be proud that it became a conversation about immigration. You just proved that queers are not one sided. We can and do support causes that are not just the gay issue.
Just don't spread yourself too thin. A tired, overworked, depressed Vincent does not serve any cause.
@curnon69 The answer isn't to pretend as if these borders are legitimate, since they aren't. The people (Mexicans) crossing this non-existent have traversed these lands for thousands of years. This land will always belong to them more than it does to those who came later on and tried to lay claim to it. If we tolerate the European descendants of those who crossed the borders, then there's no reason not to do the same with those whose ancestors have always lived here.
Yes, but you are a legal citizen. Those who enter this country illegally, then march in the streets demanding rights from our government are, in my opinion, acting outrageous. They, like millions of others, can enter this country legally.
Or, they can go back to their own country, march in their own streets, protest and demand the same rights they're demanding from us, from their own government.
The thing is though, these people contribute to our economy, they contribute to our workforce, etc. They are a part of American society, despite not being legally recognized for it.
Immigration is near and dear to my heart since my dad is an undocumented immigrant in this country.
They also leech off of our economy as well, which many people 'claim' does not outweigh the good they do. I've yet to see any reputable facts to back that statement up. It must be pretty nice to receive free Health Care and not have to pay taxes. If they want to be here legally, they can apply to do so and if they want to be citizens, then they can start paying for their Healthcare and paying taxes like the rest of us.
I agree, they should be legally recognized, for the crime they've committed.
They do pay taxes though; I know my dad does at least and my other undocumented friends and family members. Health care should be free to all people, I believe that's a universal right.
Most who are illegally in this country are not paid like the rest of us. But even so, it doesn't change the fact that the rest of Americans don't receive free Healthcare, so why should people who violate our laws and hurt our economy?
I just don't understand why it's so difficult for people to legally enter this country. I know many people who have...Nor do I understand why people ignore the word ILLEGAL in Illegal Immigrant.
It is practically impossible to become a "legal" citizen of the United States, the process takes years and years and you're limited by tons of bureaucracy and red tape.
Those laws are completely bullshit. I ignore the word "illegal" because I don't believe in this laws. I see my dad, friends, and family members as just "undocumented" not hardcore criminals.
Why can't people just refer to themselves as Americans instead of separating themselves as "Mexican American" or "Gay American"? Just like most 'groups' of individuals, they want to be treated equally yet they are constantly separating themselves from everyone else.
As for Immigration Legislation, how is that an injustice? If people want to be a citizen of the US, they can do so LEGALLY. They violate our laws, march in our streets and demand rights which don't belong to them.
regardless of any race - isn`t diffcult coming out and being gay? I think so - i know!
