Nice Cummins there. I'm a Toyota fan for offroad stuff, but for pulling give me that cummins and a 6 speed. I bet that Toyota would own that Dodge offroad, though. Looks to be a SAS truck. It has, what, 190 hp at most, while that dodge has a ton of hp and torque.
my 01 ho 1 ton duallly wont even smoke one bit with a bobcat and trailer going up hill under hard throttle! its sad but the turbo is loud, it would be nice to get some black smoke under this big load.
dont these high power rigs have so much black smoke from the extra fuel pumped into them in order to keep egts down?? of did i inhale too much smoke?
How come its still smoking if it has twin turbos? I'm new to this whole diesel thing and I once heard that when the turbos spool, more of the fuel is completely burned.
correct when the turbos are spooling more fuel is being burned, but also more fuel is being unburned, dodges will always pump endless amounts of smoke compared to chevy or ford, and im guessing its the design of the ingine, the str8 six. my favorite kind!
he could have it strait piped and that causes it to smoke and/or he has it chipped which would tell the ecu to put more diesel in the engine thus buring less equaling more smoke
straight piping does not cause it to smoke infact i helps to clear it because it allows more flow therefore better turbo spooling. the simple reason to him smoking so much is because he is severely over-fueling, he thinks he is gaining power but in reality all he is doing is wasting diesel. a well tuned diesel will haze pre-boost then no smoke at all, take my cousins for example, he is almost 600 hp can light 35's up on dry asphault in 4th just by standing on it, and he just puffs a little
have you seen the worlds fastest diesel, i belive its a cummins and it smokes like a friggin train almost the entire time untile his turbos are at like 7000+ rpm i think its on you tube check it out sometime. you say they are over fueling and not tuned right but its tuned so that when both turbos are at full swing they still have the fuel needed to gain maximum hp and then some..
yes i know they smoke and i get what your saying, but that still doesn't mean they aren't overfueling, they don't have enough turbo to cover the fuel that is being used. I never said it was bad and i never said they didn't have power, but that black smoke can be turned into power if done exactly right, (don't get me wrong im not sayin they did it wrong), oh and it would be quite above 7000 rpm a stock turbo at full boost is around 100,000 rpms
the best way to get max power from a diesel is to inject more then can be burned completly...
so if he did crank up the boost, or have nitrous it would clear up the smoke and add say 100 hp, but then at that boost/nitrous level he added enough fuel to smoke again it would be up 150+
no high performance diesel run propane really, although propane is excellent for fuel mileage apparently, water-meth, usually water is just a way to cool the intake air
actually no the best way to get max power from a diesel is to tune it to the point that at full boost full load there is a slight haze still visible, not a huge cloud of smoke that is wasted fuel and power
wrong....i have seen a 1800 hp cummins in a dodge with a haze and no additives all diesel! If you spend the time and do your homework you can build a high hp diesel with little to no smoke! My cousin built his 12 valve to about 550 hp and had smoke pre-boost but as soon as the turbo lit it was almost completely clean, my 12 valve went from 180 hp stock to around 320hp and i have no smoke once the turbo lites, and as far as injector issues go they cause smoke because of improper fueling.
so your calling me a liar because i have seen an 1800 hp cummins not smoke with no additives? or because both mine and my cousins dodge don't smoke? and no its not just the way it is its a really simple concept that people just can't seem to get through their thick skull, black smoke is not completely burned fuel due to not enough air, more air=a more complete burn=more power! if the guy in this video put bigger turbos with the same fuel ratio he would produce more power and less smoke
and what you fail to realize is that you can only push so much boost before your cylinder pressure causes your crank to snap or your head to get some major air time. you can have 5000hp worth of fuel and get away with it, but with those motors try pumping in 5000hp worth of boost, and tell me what breaks first
first off your not going to make 5000 hp on a stock bottom end for very long, second off have you tied burning 5000 hp worth of fuel without air...not gonna burn. also even with that much fuel your gonna be liftin heads and your wont have to worry about the crank breakin cause it will be on the ground the first time you get on it
and yet again you fail to see the point, your just argueing for the sake of arguing now. as stated by a couple other people you are not going to make ungodly hp without smoke, and id love too see this 1800 hp all boost cummins you speak of. cause personally the only cummins that ive seen that can make that power without smoke once the boost is maxxed is in a modded twin turbo semi, and he was still spittin smoke, just not a huge cloud.
no i argue cause it pisses me off that you are too ignorant to realize that black smoke is worthless and you can actually make more hp without black clouds of smoke. Also I argue because you either have no clue what you are talking about or you were severly misinformed and for some reason believe the first info you came across! but believe what you want its people like you that give diesel a bad name because you think smoke is the answer!
i have been a diesel tech for 14 years, i above all am not misinformed. and for 1 at no point did i say all that smoke was a good thing so get your facts straight before you assume anything. and the sheer fact is when you are dumping enough fuel in to make the kind of power your talking about you will make a cloud of smoke until the turbo spools to full boost, and before you tell me im wrong come out here and look at a couple of the 3200 hp cats that the guys built.
@BlackBirdv6 It actually is good overall for this application. When you dump all that fuel in there it helps keep the engine cooler due to it evaporating and taking with it heat (Latent Heat). Same concept as you get mineral spirits on your hand and it feels cold. As far as efficiency, the gallons/hp is reduced. :/.
and btw something else you fail to get is that under a heavy load, i dont care what diesel you have it will make smoke. i have about 25 trucks at work that will back up this fact.
well all your 25 trucks run like shit then cause none of our four dodges smoke under a load none of them are close to stock and our dumptruck runs cleaner under load then when empty because it spools the turbo higher and mix more air with the fuel! For bein a mechanic for 14 years you must be a piss poor mechanic if all your "Trucks" smoke under a load at full boost! have fun melting your engines down! oh and im not the one talking about "the kind of power you are talking about" you are!
once again you show your lack of knowledge and how little you pay attention, i never said at full boost, i said under heavy load. and unless your dumptruck is running a vgt its not going to change the amount of boost it runs. and a 400hp 5.9 is nothing, i can go out and point out about 50 of em in town, nothing special. your obviously very uneducated on this subject, go get another diesel power magazine and start studying you retard
thinking im smarter then you i never said i was. I may only be a first year diesel tech student but i can tell the difference between overfueling and runnin just right! Obviously you can't and think smoke is a side effect of power when its actually a lack of knowledge on what is actually happening or to much fuckin ignorance to realize what is happening! Oh and before you open your fat trap again why don't you read up on what a diesel engine even is you fucktard!
ok, before your ignorance starts to spread, take your 400hp pickup truck, hook it to a trailer with roughly 25000 pounds on it, and take off full throttle. when your truck spits smoke until the turbo is completely spooled up you will understand. 1st year or not its basic mechanics and understanding how any diesel motor works, it is impossible to have a completely efficent motor, no matter how many times you say it is,
ok first off i never said they didnt smoke pre boost or even until the turbo is fully spooled, i said at FULL BOOST!! read my posts before you try to be a know it all!
ive met so many people that say the exact same thing your saying, but the second you show them their " efficiently tuned motor" spitting smoke they dont believe you. and on a side note, you lack of knowledge continues to amuse me, you set in a classroom and read books, while i have been doing it hands on for most of my life. ive forgotten more than you will ever know, and obvioulsy your inability to completely understand what a motor is capable of will hinder your future as a diesel tech.
i never said i didn't have a lack of knowledge i do about most things but i happen to know what i am saying about this whole thing is true. oh and i don't sit in a classroom and read books our class is 80 percent real life! People bring their stuff in for us to work on. And you sure do seem to be full of yourself with the comment about having forgotten more then ill ever know. And i know what an ENGINE is capable of just because im a first year don't mean i never have worked on them before.
I just went and checked out the worlds fastest diesel, ive seen that pickup in person its pretty sweet, and that appears to be grayish smoke which would mean he has either water-meth injection or i beleive propane injection. I don't know much about what types of injection create grayish smoke because i personally find it in a way "cheating"! just my veiw but if you can't build the power without it then you have no business building something with that much power. again just my opinion
in your origional post you said "untile his turbos are at like 7000+ rpm" so yes i was talking about the turbo speed. 7000 is a little steep even the pullers are only turning about 5000 engine rpms. oh and thats not the first time ive been called crazy..lol

it also depends on wht size turbos hes runnin and wether they are actual twin turbos (two of the same turbo) or compound turbos (two different turbos set up so one runs better bottom end and the other does better top end)

ive worked on diesels for years, including 2000+ hp pullers, anyone who is pushing thier truck hard makes smoke, thats just the way it is...
