However after some events in her life and with the help and influence of friends and family, she turned over a new leaf and matured to be much more kind and caring. Since they're only teenagers in this show, it's possible that the writers thought it more appropriate to go with how MJ used to be, rather then how she is now. Just a theory. Could be wrong.
